Drive in Ontario
Welcome to Ontario! Here’s what you need to know if you are, or will be, visiting Ontario — and want to drive while you’re here.
Visiting: less than 3 months
If you are visiting Ontario for less than 3 months and want to drive while you’re here, you can use a valid driver’s license from your own province, state or country.
Visiting: more than 3 months
If you will be visiting from another country for more than 3 months, you will need an International Driver’s Permit (IDP) from your own country. This is a special license that allows motorists to drive internationally when accompanied by a valid driver’s license from their country. You need to have this permit with you when you arrive in Ontario. You cannot apply for one once you are here.
Rules of the road
As a visitor, you are responsible for knowing Ontario traffic laws. Here are just some:
● keep to the right of the road
● obey posted speed limits (e.g. 50 km/hour)
● do not use handheld devices while driving (e.g. cell phones, tablets or music players)
● slow down and pull to the right, if an emergency vehicle is driving behind you with their lights and sirens (e.g. an ambulance, fire truck or police car)
If you break a traffic law, you will face a penalty. Penalties range from fines to making your license invalid or your car taken away. For more information, please click here.

Ed Jackson’s team were trying to climb to the top of a Himalayan Mountain. However, weeks after they set off, they were stranded (滞留) there overnight without water, food or tents at a temperature of about -30℃. They took turns to keep each other awake in case they fell asleep and did not wake up again.
Actually, that night on the mountain top was not the first time that Jackson had been close to death. Five years ago, while still a professional rugby player, Jackson broke his neck in a challenge, which nearly killed him. Jackson was told by doctors that he was likely to face life in a wheelchair. He was forced to retire from playing rugby.
Luckily, Jackson managed to discard his wheelchair six months after the accident. To mark the first anniversary of his accident, Jackson set himself the goal of climbing Mount Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, even though he was still using two crutches (拐杖) then. He tried to climb many higher mountains after that. Four years later, he found himself in the Himalayas.
The challenges that Jackson faced in the mountains have had a great impact on his recovery both physically and mentally. Jackson realized that others might benefit, too. So he started the charity Millimeters to Mountains (M2M) with his wife Lois and his friend Oily Barkley. It takes beneficiaries (受益人) who have suffered physical or psychological injuries in challenges around the world, allowing them to access the healing power of nature.
Jackson says, “I once lost hope in life because of my bad condition, thinking there was nothing I could do. But hopefully what I’m doing, what we’re doing with the charity and what our beneficiaries are proving can give anyone the hope that they can turn their life around, no matter how discouraging it might seem at that moment.”
24. What do the first two paragraphs mainly talk about
A. Jackson was tired of ball games.
B. Jackson was no stranger to suffering in life.
C. Jackson was well respected for his survival skills.
D. Jackson was advised to do exercise by his doctors.
25. What does the underlined word “discard” probably mean in the third paragraph

A. To educate sports lovers. B. To raise money for the disabled.
C. To encourage safe mountain climbing. D. To help people with similar experiences.
27. What kind of person is Jackson probably
A. Enthusiastic and independent. B. Creative and aggressive.
C. Adventurous and inspiring. D. Responsible and humorous.

In recent years, China has witnessed the growth of luxury (奢侈品) brands. In this market, Chinese consumers are now the largest spenders. It’s clear that a new generation of young, materialistic people is increasingly relying on luxury brands to improve its self-image. I am a fashionist too, at least in spirit — I love to look at clothes and shoes. But I don’t understand why people spend lots of money on designer labels. When a young woman buys a handbag that costs two months of her salary, that’s a scary thing.
What’s interesting is that scientists have found that having luxury things doesn’t lead to happiness. Study after study has shown that although we want material things, when we get them we don’t suddenly become “happy” people. In fact, a series of studies by Leaf Van Boven at the University of Colorado, US, has shown that individuals who spend money on travel and similar experiences get more pleasure than those who invest it in material things. That’s because experiences are more easily combined with a person’s identity. If I travel to Yunnan, that adventure affects how I think in the future. My memories become a part of me.
Moreover, as Van Boven has observed, young people who pursue happiness through “things” are liked less by their peers. People prefer those who pursue happiness through experiences.
It’s natural to want to express yourself through your appearance. So my advice is: create a look that isn’t tied to a designer label. Convey your own message. Take some lessons from the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. He was always in Levis jeans and a black turtleneck. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, routinely appears in hoodies and sneakers. These people, successful people, have style. You don’t have to break the bank to send a message about who you are. Take a trip. Go out into the world. Then come back and confidently create your own signature look.
28. What can we infer from the first three paragraphs
A. The author enjoys buying luxury brands herself.
B. The author agrees to spend money on material things.
C. The author is critical of youths tying their looks to designer labels.
D. The author finds it natural for fashionists to follow fashion trends.
29. Leaf Van Boven’s studies showed that .
A. traveling changes a person’s identity greatly
B. people dislike those who love luxuries
C. experiences can bring people more happiness than luxuries
D. luxuries have a negative effect on people’s happiness
30. What is the author’s advice on expressing oneself
A. Be selective about designer labels. B. Create your own personal unique style.
C. Choose styles that are simple and comfortable. D. Try styles like Mark Zuckerberg’s.
31. The main purpose of the article is to .
A. persuade readers to invest in experiences instead of luxuries
B. prove how luxury leads to an unpleasant life
C. tell how to express yourself through appearances
D. report on a series of studies about luxuries and happiness

For some people, nothing beats a long walk on a sandy beach. But there’s no denying that it’s not as easy or as fast to get around on the beach as it is on a road or a sidewalk. But why is it so hard to walk on sand
The problem with sand is that it’s soft; you “sink in” at each step. This forces you to use 2.1 to 2. 7 times more energy with every step you take. Another idea is that people walk more difficultly on soft than they do on hard surfaces, a study found. The researchers compared how people walked on foam (沫) and hard surfaces by analyzing the forces under their feet and how much oxygen each person consumed. They found that walking on soft surfaces, such as sand, mud and snow, caused people to take longer steps — actions that use more energy than walking on a hard surface.
But as experienced beach walkers know, there’s a way to make it easier to walk on sand: Just add water, When sand is wet, it becomes more compact (紧密), and walking on it is more similar to walking on hard surface. In other words, it’s much easier to cross a beach by walking along the shoreline, where the waves roll in and out. This is a balance though; too much water could make the sand soft once again. If water isn’t an option, there is another way to make walking on sand easier — increasing your surface area. This could be accomplished by wearing shoes.
Although it’s more difficult, there are some good reasons to exercise on sand. The impact forces are lower on sand than on hard surface. Research suggests that walking across sand is much easier on your joints (关节) and muscles, especially compared with an unforgiving surface such as concrete (混凝土). This means sand is a better surface for helping athletes recover more quickly from workouts.
32. Why is the question raised in the first paragraph
A. To show problems. B. To call up readers’ memories.
C. To invite readers to answer it. D. To draw readers’ attention to the topic.
33. How can you walk on sand more easily
A. By putting on shoes. B. By taking longer steps.
C. By walking in the water. D. By using special breath methods.
34. Which of the following surfaces is unsuitable for athletes’ training
A. Sand. B. Concrete.
C. Foam. D. Snow.
35. What may be the best title for the text
A. Tips for Beach Vacation B. All Kinds of Sports on the Sand
C. Why Is It So Hard to Walk on Sand D. Where Are We With the Sand Research

Upset by something a classmate said to him, he pushed the boy, and a fight happened. When the teacher stepped in to break it up, Rick went crazy, throwing papers and books around the classroom and rushing out. His teachers couldn’t say anything that would comfort the kid. And the parents of his schoolmates were getting concerned. Rick was earning quite the reputation. After talking with school officials, Rick’s mom tried everything she could to calm Rick down.
She tried different methods until one day she came home with a canvas (画布) and paint. “What’s this ”, Rick asked. Rick’s mom handed over the painting equipment and said, “Whenever you feel angry, paint whatever you’re angry about instead of bursting out.” Rick wasn’t that happy about it but he gave it a try anyway. Over the next few weeks, the young boy created several artworks. They mostly showed disturbing images though. So his mom took all of the paintings and called Rick over so that they could talk about them. “Tell me, Rick. What are these paintings about ”

And the last painting is about how one of my schoolmate’s father suggested that I change my attitude. All of them make me so angry.” Rick’s mom, in a calm voice, took Rick by her side and told him: “Don’t you see it, Rick ” “See what ” Rick asked. “You’re so angry at all of these things but not once did you try to understand why you’re getting so angry. 【答案】36. C 37. G 38. F 39. A 40. D
【36题】
根据后文“Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.(许多人经常缺乏睡眠,因为他们熬夜过晚,无法早起准备工作。这些人一旦回到家就没有什么动力了。懒惰与缺乏动力和爱拖延密切相关。通过调整你的睡眠时间表,提供几个小时重要的休息,你可以战胜一整天的懒惰)”可知,本段关于克服懒惰的方法是要获得充足的睡眠,C选项中sleep与后文中sleep相对应。故C选项“克服懒惰的一个方法是获得充足的睡眠”符合语境,故选C。
【37题】
根据上文“Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more proactive approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone.(另一种战胜懒惰的方法是把思想从被动转变为主动。有些人对待自己的生活就好像是被迫从一个任务推到另一个任务。另一些人则采取更积极主动的方法,将每项任务视为他们必须独自克服的挑战)”可知,本段克服懒惰的方法是变被动为主动,也就是说,要主动掌握生活,本句为本段最后一句,应承接上文说明当无法主动掌控生活时,就会变懒惰的情况。故G选项“当你觉得自己不再能掌控自己的生活时,就会变得懒惰”符合语境,故选G。
【38题】
根据后文“complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film.(完成一些任务,用自己喜欢的东西奖励自己,比如一顿美餐或一场电影)”可知,后文提到了用自己喜欢的东西奖励自己,可知本段说明的克服懒惰的方法是:给予自己奖励,F选项中a reward system for yourself对应后文中reward yourself。故F选项“为自己建立一个奖励系统,就像父母为自己的孩子做的那样”符合语境,故选F。
39题】
根据上文“Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately.(懒惰在家里也是一个长期存在的问题。夫妻和孩子的精力可能各不相同,但如果不立即处理,懒惰会蔓延开来)”以及后文“Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own task. 【答案】Dear friends,
Do you know the earth is becoming warmer and warmer It is human activity that has caused global warming. A low-carbon lifestyle is the key to handling this big problem.
To fulfill it, we should do our part in our daily life. First, turn off the taps, the lights and so on when we are not using them. It is a good idea to recycle everything recyclable in our daily life. What’s more, motor vehicles use a lot of energy — so walk or ride a bike if we can. It also makes sense to stick to the habit of setting the temperature of our air conditioners at about 26° C in summer.
Let’s take action now! If we can make small changes in our way of life, we can make a big difference to the earth.
The Student’s Union
【答案】One possible version
Rick was lost in thought. It slowly dawned on him that people he was angry at had done nothing wrong. His classmates who showed their new clothes and pencil cases to others might just want to share their happiness with friends. His teacher did blame him because he was being a problem. And his schoolmate’s father was just trying to help him correct his mistakes. They had no intention to hurt him but he just let his unreasonable anger consume him and hurt them. How ridiculous he had been!
Rick knew it was time to change. From then on, Rick tried his best to control his temper. Every time he felt he was to explode, he would walk away and ask himself why he was angry and whether it was reasonable to be angry. Then he would find his peace and laughed his anger away. Gradually, everyone saw a different Rick. He no longer shouted at others or threw things away. He chatted with classmates after class and complimented their new clothes and pencil cases. He even helped teachers carry books before class sometimes. Rick’s change surprised everyone and they all felt happy for him.
