Your Garden Escape
Even in the big city you can find oases (绿洲) of calm and beauty. From a royal palace to a classical garden, we recommend great green spaces to escape the hustle and bustle of London.
Horniman Gardens
Horniman Gardens cover 16 acres with breathtaking views of London. Visitors can enjoy the Sound Garden, Meadow Field, and even a Prehistoric Garden, which features a display of “living fossils”. The gardens are very popular with families, and dogs can be let off their leads in the Meadow Field.
Chiswick House& Gardens
As a classical garden landscape in London, it was here that the English Landscape Movement was born with William Kent’s designs. Enjoy fresh bread, seasonal food, and natural wines in the award-winning cafe, while admiring the beauty of the naturalistic landscape, spotted with impressive art and statues.
Buckingham Palace Garden
The 39-acre garden boasts more than 350 types of wildflowers, over 200 trees and a three-acre lake. The garden also provides a habitat for native birds rarely seen in London. A tour of the garden can be completed by having a cream tea in the cafe overlooking the Palace’s famous grassland and lake.
Kew Gardens
The Royal Botanic Garden at Kew is one of the world’s most famous gardens and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Have a walk through the vast garden, spot local wildlife at the lake, or get your hands dirty by trying a gardening lesson. Be sure to visit the Temperate House, which contains some of the rarest and most threatened plants.

Alexa is Amazon’s cloud-based voice service available on hundreds of millions of devices from Amazon and third-party device manufacturers. With Alexa, you can build natural voice experiences that offer customers a way to interact with the technology they use every day.
Alexa is always eavesdropping (窃听). (So are Siri, Google Assistant, and any other virtual assistant you invite into your home.) This is and isn’t as horrible as it sounds. Although it’s true that the device can hear everything you say within range of its microphones, it is listening for its wake word before it starts recording. Once it hears that —“Alexa” is the default (默认), but there are other options — everything in the following few seconds is considered to be a command or a request and is sent to (and stored on) servers in the cloud, where the correct response is triggered. Think of a smart speaker like a dog: It’s always listening, but it understands only “cookie,” “walk,” or “Buddy.” Everything else goes right over its head.
Every time Alexa hears a command, Amazon — its parent company — has just learned something about you. Maybe the company learned only that you like to listen to the Police, or that you like funny jokes, or that you turn your lights off at 11 p.m. every night. If you were to say “Alexa, where should I bury the body ” you’re not going to have the police showing up at your door. (I know because I’ve tried it.)
Alexa does make mistakes. Sometimes this can be funny, such as when Alexa hears its wake word in a TV show. Other times it’s more serious, including an instance in 2018 when Alexa mistakenly sent an entire private conversation to a random person’s Echo device. Occasionally there are even humans listening to your request for weather reports or trying to figure out what you meant when you added “mangosteens” to your shopping list. Sound disturbing You likely already agreed to it in the app’s terms of use when you installed the device.
What bits of privacy are you willing to sacrifice for the convenience provided by a smart speaker If you trust that Amazon’s intentions are no more immoral than getting a better idea of what you want to buy on Prime Day, then you have your answer. If you worry about your private information falling into the hands of the wrong people, then you have another answer.
4. Why does the author compare smart speakers to dogs
A. To show smart speakers are life companions like dogs.
B. To show smart speakers are sensitive to users’ commands.
C. To show smart speakers are woken by specific words.
D. To show wake words for smart speakers are different.

B. The tech company is spying on users’ everyday life.
C. The tech company turns a blind eye to some crimes.
D. The tech company is interested in users’ music taste.
6. Which of the following best describes Alexa
A. All-round. B. Imperfect. C. Funny. D. Immoral.
7. What does the author think of using smart speakers
A. It is a matter of opinion. B. Privacy is a high price to pay.
C. It is part and parcel of life. D. Convenience always comes first.

Here’s an idea whose time has come: A flu shot that doesn’t require an actual shot.
For the first time, researchers have tested a flu vaccine patch (疫苗贴) in a human clinical trial and found that it delivered as much protection as a traditional injection with a needle (注射针). Doctors and public health experts have high hopes that it will increase the number of people who get immunized (免疫的) against the flu.
Seasonal flu is responsible for up to half a million deaths around the world each year according to the World Health Organization. A team led by Georgia Tech engineer Mark Prausnitz has come up with another method that uses “microneedles”. These tiny needles are so small that 100 of them, arranged in order on a patch, can fit under your thumb. Yet they’re big enough to hold vaccine for three types of flu.
None of the study volunteers had serious side effects. The groups that got patches had mild skin reactions that were not seen in the regular needle group, while the volunteers in the regular needle group were more likely to experience pain. Overall, 70 percent of the volunteers who got vaccine patches said they’d rather use them again than get a traditional flu shot. The study authors declared it a success on all fronts.
The biggest beneficiaries (受益者) could be people in low-and middle-income countries, where flu vaccines are hard to come by. Reducing pain is nice, but other benefits—the patch costs less, is easier to transport, doesn’t require fridge, can be self-administered and doesn’t cause waste of needles—are even better.“
Microneedle Patches have the potential to become ideal candidates for vaccination programs,” wrote Katja Hoschler and Maria Zambon of Public Health England.
8. What do we know about the vaccine patch
A. It is produced by the WHO. B. It delivers vaccine to the little finger.
C. It causes slight side effects. D. It works badly on 30% of the volunteers.
9. The new patch has all the following benefits except that .
A. it can be used without a doctor B. it is provided free of charge
C. it can be kept at room temperature D. it needs less care in transportation
10. What is Kaija and Maria’s attitude towards the new shot
A. Cautious. B. Disapproving. C. Indifferent. D. Supportive.
11. What is the passage mainly about
A. A vaccine patch that cures people of their flu.
B. A clinical study that protects people from disease.
C. A vaccine patch that makes flu shots a thing of the past.
D. A method that makes traditional flu shots painless.
D
Plenty of scientific work proves that children, and even adults, who learn sign language, gain the benefits not only in the ability to communicate with other sign language users, but also in the wider academic world.
Deaf children who learn sign language at an early age tend to perform better academically. This is partly due to their increased ability to communicate with those around them. However, it is also because sign language is not, as many people mistakenly think, a system of gestures representing words, but a complete and complex language system. Thus, children who learn sign language have already learnt about the way language works, which will help in future studies.
Again, for non-deaf children and adults who learn sign language, the academic advantages spill over into social and cultural ones. Firstly, learning sign language allows the speaker to communicate with a whole new community of people and gain an understanding of how they communicate within their community. Secondly, learning a language gives rise to greater confidence for that person, as he is able to communicate with someone who may struggle to do so. And the skills of language learning can easily be applied to learning other languages but also to other academic pursuits.
There can be no doubt that learning sign language is a useful endeavour for anyone — whether they are deaf themselves and live in a house with other deaf people or whether they are non-deaf and do not know anyone who is. The social, cultural and academic advantages of learning this complex language are diverse and should not be taken lightly. And, especially with children, learning a language which helps people with a disadvantage may encourage them in the future to do more — volunteering and other such work. This means that the non-deaf child can be given a sense of social responsibility at an early age and taught to embrace (接受) all people — not in spite of their differences but because of them.
12. What is sign language according to the author
A. It is a creative way of expressing ideas.
B. It is a complete complex language system.
C. It is a primary language of disabled people.
D. It is a system of gestures representing words.
13. What does the underlined word “endeavor” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Attempt. B. Experiment. C. Incident. D. Feedback.
14. What quality can a non-deaf child who learns sign language acquire
A. Being competitive. B. Being courageous. C. Being responsible. D. Being positive.
15. What conclusion can we draw from the text
A. Learning sign language brings people an advantage of finding a future job.
B. The numerous advantages of learning sign language should be taken seriously.
C. Non-deaf children should learn sign language due to the differences of the deaf people.
D. It’s unnecessary for non-deaf person who doesn’t know any deaf people to learn sign language.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
My husband and I made an agreement to help each other stay off social media platforms as much as possible. We left our accounts up instead of deleting them, but consciously stopped using them. 16 Now, I’m glad to report that they have worked.
Tired of being the last to hear of things, we downloaded a few news-specific apps that provide timely information. 17 Instead of relying on articles shared by my friends, I now have access to a steady stream of headlines that span far broader than my pre-specified interests.
Staying updated on our social circle has also been a more conscious effort. Previously I was kept up-to-the-minute on engagements, weddings, new jobs and babies through updates and pictures. Without social media, I now learn of these important events only when actually meeting the people involved.
18 The effort taken to sit down and write is far challenging, but when I do take the time to keep a journal, my reflections go far deeper.
I still log in occasionally. 19 Based on the screen time tracked by my phone, I used to spend an average of over 24 hours a week on various social media platforms. That is down to just 20 minutes every month now, freeing up a great deal of time for sleep, hobbies and offline interactions.
20 I might know less about my acquaintances (泛泛之交) now, but have more time to keep directly in touch with my closest friends. Walking home last week, I was greeted by a dramatic purple-pink sunset. I would have immediately reached for my phone a year ago. Now, it was enough to simply watch it darken into the night.
A. I didn’t realize how programmed I had become to constantly use the app.
B. I bought myself a diary again after many years.
C. Overall, I’m glad to have made the change.
D. However, social media now plays a much less important role in my life.
E. This has also widened the range of news I keep up with.
F. We have made a few adjustments in our daily life.
G. I do miss the convenience of using social media to record and reflect.

第三部分:写作(满分15分)
Nowadays, people tend to stare at their mobile phones almost everywhere—in subways, restaurants, lifts, supermarkets, everywhere. While it is normal to check your phone occasionally, if you are one of those people who just can’t stop using their phone, then you could be suffering from mobile phone addiction.
We cannot ignore the mobile phone’s negative influences. Many people waste too much time using their phones every day. Their spare time is spent on things like mobile phone games, watching Internet videos, and checking social media apps. Such constant use can lead to physical health problems like neck pain and eye disease. Relationship problems can also occur due to “phubbing”—ignoring the people around you in favour of your phone.
It is high time that people put their phones aside and raised their heads. Pay more attention to others and have more face-to-face communication. What’s more, do more exercise, which is much more beneficial than time spent on a phone. In a word, only when we learn to limit our phone use can we live a happy life.
