While other artists might use watercolors or oil paints, Mbongeni Buthelezi uses waste plastics to create portraits (肖像) at his studio in Booysens, Johannesburg. His medium is the plastie litter he collects from local rubbish dumps and city streets. “Animals are dying and fish in the ocean are dying—because of this material. It is we humans that need to take responsibility,” said the 56-year-old artist. Over the past three decades, Buthelezi has been using his works to both highlight and address the issue.
Buthelezi’s use of waste wasn’t always in defense of the environment. He first began using plastic litter because he couldn’t afford expensive oil paints while studying at the college. Then, he developed a unique technique of using an electric heat gun that produced hot air to melt the plastic. According to Buthelezi, this is more environmentally friendly than using flames to melt plastic and doesn’t release noxious smoke and gases into the atmosphere.
His artistic process involves melting down pieces of plastic onto a thick plastic background, often in more than one layer (层) to create complex textures and color combinations. He calls the process simple and random, but believes that the final pieces speak for themselves. “I’m interested in finding the details in the painting, but also see the whole story as you view it from afar,” he says.
Buthelezi also uses his art as a vehicle to tell important stories about South Africa and the difficulties of life in South Africa’s townships. In 2010, online magazine Live Out Loud said his art “reflects humanity’s often harmful impact on the environment, but his original use of waste objects to picture an often forgotten group of people truly sets him apart”. His paintings have been exhibited in South Africa, as well as Germany, the US, and Holland, for years.
24. Why did Buthelezi originally use waste plastics for his art
A. To reduce the cost of creating art. B. To draw attention to plastic pollution.
C. To make his works eye-catching. D. To develop his own artistic style.
25. How does Buthelezi create his artworks on a thick plastic surface
A. He applies brightly painted plastic.
B. He combines plastic with watercolors.
C. He layers the melted pieces of waste plastic.
D. He uses glue to stick the plastic litter together.
26. What can be inferred about Buthelezi’s works
A. They cover limited subjects.
B. They have been well received.
C. They sold not well at home and abroad.
D. They are less expressive of poor people’s life.
27. In which column of the newspaper can we probably read the passage
A. Health. B. Sports. C. Science. D. People.
C
Many people ask this question, “Why is body language so important ” Studies have shown that in the process of communication, non-verbal (非语言的) expression has 65% to 93% more influence than actual words. This means that “how to say” is more important than “what to say”: Of course, this does not mean that you don’t need to make preparations for your interviews and nor does it mean that you can take any shortcuts. On the contrary, this means that you have more things to pay attention to and prepare for.
In the real workplace, body language is much more important than you think. Without proper body language, you may find yourself trapped in a circle where you can’t integrate (融合) with the external environment, not to mention the difficulties in the absence of body language in the workplace.
“People can often make inferences from actions, and the results of these inferences directly affect lives: for example, who will be employed and who will be promoted.” Academician Amy Cuddy said in a TV talk show. She also said that “our body language will also affect our perception of ourselves. When you try to make more authoritative actions, your brain will unconsciously receive signals and actually create an idea that you are more authoritative, so that you have more confidence in yourself”.
Therefore, before interviews or important meetings, try not to lean on any object or have your back bent forward. Instead, you should try to keep your body upright. You can even stand straight with a relatively authoritative posture. Of course, you may need to do these things in the bathroom or places where no one could see you.
So, as a green hand, every time you are nervous or feel that you can’t do it, stretch your body, smile, and tell yourself, “Fake it till you become it!”
28. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 1 refer to
A. Your words have a greater effect than the way you express yourself.
B. The way you express yourself has a greater effect than your words.
C. You should pay much attention to the beginning of communication.
D. You should attach importance to the process of communication.
29. How can improper body language affect people according to the second paragraph
A. They may not be accepted as a member of a social group.
B. They may make others completely understand them.
C. They may make a smaller achievement in their career.
D. They may not have much control over their feelings.
30. From what angle did Amy Cuddy present her views in Paragraph 3
A. Medicine. B. Philosophy. C. Psychology. D. History.
31. Why does the author suggest people not lean on any object
A. To demonstrate they show respect to others.
B. To prove they are in good physical condition.
C. To indicate they tend to be friendly to others.
D. To show they have trust in themselves.
D
Recent developments in robotics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning have brought us in the eye of the storm of a new automation age. About half of the work carried out by people was likely to be automated by 2055 with adaption to technology, a McKinsey Global Institute report predicted.
Automation can enable businesses to improve performance by reducing errors and improving quality and speed, and in some cases achieving outcomes that go beyond human capabilities. At a time of weak productivity growth worldwide, automation technologies can provide the much-needed promotion of economic growth, according to the report. Automation could raise productivity growth globally by 0.8 percent to 1.4 percent. At a global level, technically automated activities involved 1.1 billion employees and 11.9 trillion U.S. dollars in wages, the report said.
The report also showed that activities most influenced by automation were physical ones in highly structured and predictable environments, as well as data collection and processing. In the United States, these activities make up 51 percent of activities in the economy, accounting for almost 2.7 trillion dollars in wages. They are most common in production, accommodation and food service, and the retail (零售) trade. And it’s not just low-skill, low-wage work that is likely to be influenced by automation; middle-skill and high-paying, high-skill occupations, too, have a degree of automation potential.
The robots and computers not only can perform a range of routine physical work activities better and more cheaply than humans, but are also increasingly capable of accomplishing activities that require cognitive (认知的) capabilities, such as feeling emotions or driving.
While much of the current debate about automation has focused on the potential that many people may be replaced and therefore lose their financial resources, the analysis shows that humans will still be needed: The total productivity gains will only come about if people work alongside machines.
32. What is the report mainly about
A. Comparisons of robots from different countries.
B. Analysis of automation’s potential in economy.
C. Prediction of the unemployment problem.
D. Explanations of the concept of artificial intelligence.
33. What might happen in 2055 according to the text
A. Automation will cause weak productivity growth.
B. Automation will reduce employees’wages.
C. Activities like data collection and processing will disappear.
D. Activities involving feeling emotions can be performed by robots.
34. How does the author feel about human workers
A. Worried. B. Mixed. C. Optimistic. D. Doubtful.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Automation: A future replacement for humans
B. Robots: A challenge to all humans
C. Retail trade: Where to go from here
D. Automation: Who is the eventual winner

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Making good eye contact is a surprisingly difficult yet important part of good communication skills. If you want to improve your ability to look people in the eye, you can practice making eye contact on your own to give the right impression in conversations. 36
Try to relax as much as possible. 37 Your nervousness can then be misinterpreted as dishonesty. So staying relaxed is of particular importance. If you’re going into an important meeting or interview, do some breathing exercises. A few big, full, deep breaths can do a lot to calm you down.
Focus on one eye. 38 It’s more common to focus on one, or on a spot on the face, rather than trying to look at both eyes at once. If it helps, try moving back and forth between the two eyes.
Break your gaze (凝视) to make other gestures while listening. 39 This looks natural as well as providing you with a needed break if necessary.
40 It’s one thing to look while you’re listening. But it’s more difficult to keep eye contact while you’re also trying to say something. Don’t be afraid if you have to break your gaze occasionally, but try to keep your face and eyes forward and up as you’re talking.
A. It’s actually physically somewhat difficult to keep your eyes locked on both of another person’s eyes. B. Practice other good listening skills. C. The more you think about what you’re doing, the more awkward you’ll feel. D. Try to keep your eyes close as much as possible. E. Doing so can make you a better listener and a more effective speaker. F. It’s good to break eye contact when you’re laughing, or to nod and smile. G. Try to keep your eyes focused while you talk as well as listen.

Emma was a lively girl, always full of energy and curiosity. Among her hobbies, flying kites was her favorite. It was more than just a fun activity—it was a special time she shared with her grandfather, who had always been a central figure in her life.
On her sixteenth birthday, Emma’s grandfather gave her a gift that she would always treasure: a bright red kite with a long, colorful tail. The moment Emma saw it, she was filled with joy. This kite was special not only because it was beautiful, but because it came from her grandfather, with whom she had spent many wonderful afternoons in the park, flying kites and making happy memories.
One sunny afternoon, Emma decided to fly the kite by herself. The sky was clear, with a gentle breeze (微风) —perfect for flying. As the kite soared higher and higher into the sky, Emma felt a sense of freedom and excitement. The kite danced gracefully in the wind, and she couldn’t help but smile as she guided it.
However, just as Emma was lost in the joy of the moment, a strong wind suddenly caught the kite and pulled it out of her hands. Emma watched in shock as. the kite was swept away, flying farther and farther into the distance. She ran after it, but it was too late. The kite was gone. Emma felt a deep sense of loss, not just because she had lost the kite, but because it represented the special bond she had with her grandfather.
In the days that followed, Emma couldn’t shake the sadness that hung over her. The park, which had always been a place of joy and laughter, now seemed quiet and empty. Each time she visited, she was reminded of the red kite and the precious moments she had shared with her grandfather.

参考范文:
One sunny day, Emma’s grandfather invited her to take a walk in the park. He noticed her sadness and wanted to cheer her up. As they strolled on the familiar path, he listened patiently as Emma shared her feelings about the lost kite. After listening and offering comforting words, he surprised her by pulling out a new kite from his bag. It was not red this time, but blue, like the sky above. Emma was touched by his thoughtfulness and realized that the memories they shared were what truly mattered, not the physical object.
Emma quickly took the new kite and started to fly it. As the kite rose higher, she felt a renewed sense of joy and connection. She laughed as the kite danced in the wind, feeling her grandfather’s presence beside her. The park once again filled with laughter and happiness as her grandfather taught her new tricks and techniques, deepening their bond. Emma learned that while things might be lost, the love and memories shared with her grandfather were never truly gone.

M: I hope I can come back again while they are here. How late does the gallery stay open
W: During the weekday, it’s open till five.
M: Isn’t it open on weekends
W: It’s open till 4:00 p.m. on weekends. It opens every day at 10:00 a.m.
M: Thank you.
W: Now, come this way, please.
M: I’d rather stay here and look at these old pictures now.

M: This article is about famous people who didn’t find their perfect careers until they were in their thirties.
W: Like who
M: J. K. Rowling, for example. She was working as a researcher and secretary when she first had the idea for Harry Potter. She was 25 years old at the time, but it took her another seven years to finish writing the first novel.
W: Yes, I remember reading that somewhere.
M: Speaking of authors, there was the famous Irish writer James Joyce. After graduating from college, he traveled to Paris to pursue medical studies. He returned to Ireland when his mother became ill. Although he started writing early, he got his first book published when he was 32 years old.
W: They all knew what they wanted to be. But I’ve got no idea.
M: Don’t worry too much. I decided to study medicine at university after I met the career advisor. Why don’t you get some advice from him, too

W: Good morning. Today we’ll talk about theme parks and hear from Andy Wells, who has written a guide to theme parks around the world. Welcome to the program, Andy.
M: Hi, it’s good to be here.
W: You really have a dream job, don’t you Flying around the world all the time, visiting adventure parks…
M: Yes, it’s exciting, but it’s really hard work too.
W: I bet. So what’s the world’s number one theme park
M: That all depends. In terms of numbers, it has to be Magic Kingdom in Florida. But the most popular part for people who like adventure rides is Cedar Point in Ohio.
W: In your book, there are many theme parks in Asia too. Can you tell us about them
M: Sure. First, the Universal Studio in Singapore is very good. There is a dark ride inside a building there. That’s fun. In China, more parks have been built in the past few years, including a park called Chimelong Paradise.
W: Okay, thank you for your coming to my studio.
M: My pleasure.

M: Good afternoon, now I’ll tell you our swim classes at the community pool. Classes begin on Monday November 25th and will continue throughout the winter. Fifteen swim classes are being offered and each class lasts ten hours. A new class starts each week of the summer. Each class costs twenty dollars. The pool is big enough for six students per class. Classes will increase in difficulty each week. Students can sign up for as many classes as they like but they must pass the skill level test. For example students who sign up for Level 4 must show their certificate for completing Level 3. Children cannot sign up for a level they’re not ready for. Children who have never attended community pool classes must show up on November 22th or 23rd for a swim skill show. Instructors will write the students and assign them to a particular skill level.
