During the lively Paris Olympics, while the spotlight shone on the athletes, a group of unsung heroes worked tirelessly behind the scenes — the Olympic volunteers. This year, out of 300,000 applicants, around 45,000 were chosen as volunteers, with 20 percent coming from nearly 150 countries. These volunteers wore bright green uniforms (制服) to be easily noticed in the purple venues (场馆). They offered help to viewers and media alike, making them an important part of the Olympic experience.
On my first day as a reporter, I met a technical problem with my media system account. Thankfully, Chinese volunteer Guo came to help me out. “I hope to improve my language, communication skills, and problem- solving methods through this event,” said 24-year-old Guo from Wuhan, Central China’s Hubei Province, who was studying wireless communication at the Paris Institute of Digital Technology. As a former professional swimmer, Guo saw this as her chance to take part in the Olympics, though in a different role. Another Chinese volunteer, Yang, faced challenges in managing her job and volunteer duties. Despite giving up her holidays, she felt great pride in contributing to the event.
One of my most memorable experiences was meeting with a French volunteer. When I needed help to find the visitor center, a young man on a scooter (小型摩托车) appeared, like a sort of “Monkey King riding a cloud”, and offered to take me there. After helping me, he expressed his admiration for the Beijing Olympics and his desire to visit China again.
Volunteers like them were seen everywhere — from bus stops to competition venues — offering directions and helping with a smile. When large crowds left the venues after the events, causing overcrowding, some volunteers sat on high chairs with loudspeakers, providing directions to go outside in both English and French with a smile. These amazing volunteers, truly show the Olympic spirit, making the event and Paris shine even brighter.
4. Why might the volunteers wear bright green uniforms
A. To stand out in the crowd. B. To show love for athletes.
C. To fit in with the venues. D. To stand for their countries.
5. What do we know about Guo
A. She found it hard to balance her job and volunteer work.
B. She both swam and volunteered in the Paris Olympics.
C. She wanted to improve herself through volunteer work.
D. She wasn’t as patient and helpful as the French volunteer.
6. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To doubt the organization of the Paris Olympics,
B. To praise the service of Paris Olympic volunteers.
C. To show the meaning of hosting Olympic Games.
D. To provide a detailed schedule of Olympic events.
7. How is the text mainly developed
A. By listing the benefits of volunteer work.
B. By discussing historical Olympic events.
C. By comparing different views on Olympics.
D. By sharing personal stories and experiences.

When a 14-year-old boy from Atlanta, Georg1a disappeared earlier this year, his mother turned to her smartphone for clues using an app called Family Tracker that helped track his location. It is one of several apps that allow parents to track where their children are.
“You can see where your loved ones are without having to call or bother them,” said Roberto Franceschetti of LogSat, the creators of Family Tracker, which has more than 100,000 users worldwide.
Parents can track the location of their child on a map and send messages. Parents don’t need to own a smartphone to track their children. The service can also be accessible on the web, as long as the phone that is being tracked is running the app.
Family Tracker has an additional service that keeps all data made by the app for a two-week period which the company calls BDS breadcrumbs(面包屑). The service was used to find the missing boy in Atlanta.
“With a subscription(订阅), we keep all the locations where people have been on our servers. You can see where your kid has been for the past two weeks. You can find out where someone was at a certain time, or when that person was at a specific place,” Franceschetti explained.
“When somebody gets kidnapped(绑架), usually whoever does this throws the phone away or takes the battery out. We were hoping that our app would at least provide information on where the person was kidnapped or where had been in the past. That way the police would have a history or some clues as to who they may have been seeing.”
8. What does the text mainly about
A. The invention of an app called Family Tracker.
B. An app designed to help parents find missing children.
C. A smartphone which can activate an alarm in remote areas.
D. An app which can be used both on the phone and on the Net.
9. Which is the most important factor(因素)if a parent wants to know where his child is
A. The parent must have a smartphone.
B. The parent has to buy a map.
C. The child must have a phone running the app.
D. The child must not be in faraway areas.
10. What is BDS breadcrumbs used to do
A. To let parents send messages. B. To locate where children are.
C. To warn children of time. D. To store data produced by the app.
11. From the last paragraph we can infer that the app can be of some help to________.
A. parents B. teachers C. robbers D. policemen
D
It is difficult for a teacher to decide whether to allow students to listen to music in the classroom. Every time students need to write an essay or work on a problem, they say, “Can I put my headphones on I think better that way.” But is that really true Does music help concentrate
Research offers little to back up the idea that listening to music improves concentration. In one small study, 133 students performed reading tasks while listening to either light music, hip hop, or no music at all. Students who performed the reading tasks in silence scored the highest. Music with a higher intensity (强度) like hip hop was more distracting and had a bad effect on task performance.
Volume (音量) plays a more important role than the type of music. The study found that the louder the music, the worse the performance in concentration. The type of music didn’t matter. Data from the study showed once again that silence was the best environment to improve concentration.
However, music has a positive effect on work performance. Studies have showed that listening to music leads to positive changes in mood, as well as creativity. In fact, in music-listening cultures, which students are certainly part of, there’s actually a change in mood when the music is taken away.
It’s hard to convince my students that music doesn’t help with their concentration. Taj, a senior told me, “I wouldn’t be able to concentrate if I were listening to music and trying to read. However, when I write, I feel like music helps me concentrate deeply. I don’t have writer’s block. It’s easy for me to put my words on paper.”
“Maybe not with reading, but when it comes to math, listening to music certainly helps,” Danela told me. “You could actually be singing along with what you’re listening to and doing well in math.”
12. What does the underlined word “distracting” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Making it difficult for someone to concentrate.
B. Causing great excitement.
C. Making someone want to do something.
D. Making someone feel frightened.
13. What can we learn from the small study
A. Students do well in reading tasks while listening to music.
B. Music can’t improve people’s mood and creativity.
C. Different types of music lead to different performances.
D. The volume of music affects concentration.
14. What do Taj and Danela have in common
A. They believe music doesn’t help concentrate.
B. They use music to help with their paper-writing.
C. They can’t focus on reading while listening to music.
D. They don’t listen to music while doing math problems.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Should Students Listen to Music B. Does Music Help Concentration
C. Is Music Related to Reading D. Can Music Change Mood

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

Family Tracker has an additional service that keeps all data made by the app for a two-week period, which the company calls BDS breadcrumbs(面包屑).

C Making someone want to do something.

【答案】范文:
Use the Internet Wisely
Nowadays, some of our schoolmates have fallen into the trap of overusing the internet. They spend countless hours on social media, gaming, or watching videos, and even rely on the internet to do daily homework, posing potential risks to their health and study. This worrying trend needs our attention.
In my view, while the internet is a valuable resource for learning and entertainment, it should be used wisely. Overuse can lead to isolation and academic decline due to addiction and distractions. To tackle this issue, I suggest setting a time limit on internet usage and engaging in more face-to-face interactions.
By doing so, we can enjoy the benefits of the internet without letting it control our lives. Let’s be smart users of the internet.
