Background information
Analysis of teaching material
This lessen belongs to the fourth unit of Book 1, and the whole topic of this unit is natural disasters. This lessen is the first period the unit, so the main task is to enable students to know some natural disasters and to report a natural disasters orally.
Analysis of students
They are from class six, grade 1, senior high school.
Students in the class are at the middle level in listening and speaking. As for the topic, students may be familiar with the flood and typhoon, but they are unfamiliar with tsunami, tornado, volcanic eruption etc. Besides, they are unfamiliar with the news report and the structure. In addition, students have known the simple past tense, present continuous tense and present perfect tense, but they can’t apply them to their reports correctly.

By the end of the class, you will be able to:
(1) catch the detailed information of news reports on natural disasters while listening;
(2) know how to make news reports on natural disasters
(3) report a natural disaster orally

Teaching procedures:
Step 1. Pre-listening
Ask students to look at the opening page on page 47 and think :
What kind of natural disaster do you see in the picture
What other natural disasters can you think of
(Purpose: Guide students to understand the topic of the Unit and activate their background information.)
Ask students to watch the video” Natural Disasters” and write down the names of natural disasters.
(Purpose: Help students to know more expressions about natural disasters and lay the foundation for the listening.)
Step 2. While-Listening
Task 1: Ask students to listen to the four news reports and tick the disasters they hear. (page 48)
(Purpose: Help students to get the main information in the four reports.)
Task2: Circle the key words in the questions and write the type of information they refer
to.(page 48) Listen again and fill in the blanks.
(Purpose: Require students to apply the listening tip to the listening task, and get the detailed information quickly.)
