The three months of vacation in the country have passed like a dream. This morning my mother took me to the Baretti schoolhouse to have me enter for the third elementary grade: I was thinking of the country, and went unwillingly (不情愿地). In front of the school so many people had collected that the policeman found it hard to keep the entrance clear. Near the door, I felt myself touched on the shoulder: it was my master of the second grade, cheerful, as usual, and with his red hair ruffled. He said to me: “So we are to part forever, Enrico ” I knew it well, yet the words pained me.
We made our way in with difficulty. I was glad to see once more that large room on the ground floor, with the doors leading to the seven classes, where I had passed nearly every day for three years. My schoolmistress of the first upper class greeted me from the door of the class room, and said: “Enrico, you are going to the floor above, this year. I shall not even see you pass by any more!” And she looked sadly at me.
The school seemed so small and gloomy to me when I thought of the woods and the mountains where I had passed the summer! I thought again, too, of my master in the second class, who was so good, and who always smiled at us, and was so small that he seemed to be one of us; and I was sad that I should no longer see him, with his tumbled red hair. I said to myself: “This is my first day. There are nine months more. What work, what monthly examinations, what tiredness!” I wanted to see my mother when I came out, and I ran to kiss her hand! She said to me:
“Courage, Enrico! we will study together.” And I returned home satisfied. But I no longer have my master, with his kind, merry smile, and school does not seem so nice to me as it did before.
24. What do we know about the author

A. He liked his school very much.
B. He missed his master of Grade Two.
C. He didn’t want to see his master again.
D. He would study with his mother at school.
27. How did the author feel about his first school day

William Lindesay, a famous Great Wall expert and conservationist, and his wife Wu Qi have traveled the globe by the back paths, providing their sons with a unique growing environment. Sun hats, backpacks and sneakers (运动鞋) — these are the day-to-day must-haves for the family.
Most of their trips seem far from relaxing — cultural study in the hot and dry desert, a 53-kilometer hiking tour of New Zealand, a one-day climb to three English mountaintops and a six-day train ride from Beijing to Moscow.
Many think the family must be wealthy and can afford their global travel, but they are not. Lindesay says they just choose to spend money on travel and choose the cheapest hotels and restaurants where possible. Lindesay mentions the trip to Moscow was an example. Instead of taking a taxi from the railway station to the hotel, they took the subway. “We crossed the city for saving money, communicated with local people, and saw they are people just like us, everywhere. We arrived at our destination feeling comfortable.”
However, their journeys, which can last weeks or months, have sometimes been inconsistent with their children’s schooling. Wu remembers once Lindesay let their elder son ask for leave so that they could go to New York for a 45-day lecture tour. Therefore the son missed his final exam. Things like that bother the family all the time.
Lindesay attaches great importance to learning out of the classroom, saying that children might score well on school tests, but traveling outside, in distant lands with different languages, cultures, and political structures, is the real test. “You can only get streetwise on the street. You can only get worldly-wise when seeing the world,” he says.
28. How can we describe the Lindesays’ trips
A. Pleasant. B. relaxing.
C. Challenging. D. Dangerous.
29. What can we infer from paragraph 3
A. The family must be rich enough for their global travel.
B. They arrived at their destination Moscow feeling unpleasant.
C. They spent all money on travel and expensive accommodations.
D. They crossed the city by the subway to save costs and explore local culture.
30. What problem does the family meet when traveling
A. They have scheduling conflicts(冲突).
B. They suffer from a tight budget
C. They are faced with language barriers.
D. They hold different educational ideas.
31. Which statement may Lindesay agree with according to the text
A. Nothing is so necessary for travelers as languages.
B. There is no royal road to learning.
C. Actions speak louder than words.
D. Man who travels far knows more.
D
Alaska’s Mendenhall glacier (冰川) is about 20 minutes by car from Juneau, the state capital. It is one of the area’s most popular sites for tourists. But climate change has caused the ice to melt (融化). That means it is losing more snow and ice than it gains.
Experts guess that by 2050, people will not be able to see the Mendenhall glacier from the visitor center that was built for it. That is already the case at some other glacier visitor centers in Alaska. The disappearing glacier leads to problems for the Alaskan tourism industry.
Tourism is an important part of Juneau’s economy. About 1.6 million cruise ship passengers are expected to stop in Juneau in 2023. That is the most ever in one year. On especially busy days, 20,000 people arrive each day in the city that has only 30,000 full-time people. Cruise ships are large boats with sleeping places that carry tourists from one place to another. Many cruises start a week-long trip to Alaska in either Seattle, Washington, or Vancouver, Canada.
Manoj Pillai is a cruise ship worker from India. He recently got off his ship and went to see the Mendenhall glacier. “The glacier is so beautiful now,” he said. But he wondered what it looked like 10 or 20 years ago.
Jennifer Dumas lives in Washington, D.C. She knows what Alaska’s glaciers looked like in the past. She and her husband first visited the state and its glaciers in the 1990s. She talked about seeing the Mendenhall glacier over 20 years ago. She went to Glacier Bay National Park and spent the night near the Mendenhall glacier.
“Where we used to camp, you could see the glacier. It has retreated (退缩) so far that you can’t see the glacier anymore. So we have pictures of us in front of the glacier, but you can no longer take such pictures,” Jennifer said.
32. How does the author stress the importance of tourism to Alaska
A. By listing the number of tourists.
B. By showing the great benefit from tourism.
C. By describing native people’s living conditions.
D. By sharing the governments’ support.
33. What does the underlined word “it”in paragraph 4 refer to
A. The ship. B. India. C. The glacier. D. Juneau.
34. What does the author want to express by mentioning Jennifer Dumas
A. The tourism value of the glacier.
B. The glacier is melting quickly.
C. The glacier is losing its attraction.
D. The memory of visiting the glacier.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Alaska’s Glaciers May Disappear in the Future
B. Alaska Is Challenged by Too Many Tourists
C. It’s Time to Take Action to Stop Global Warming
D. Climate Change Influences Alaska’s Tourism Industry
