Singing is one of the purest ways to express joy, yet for most of her life, Sofia Zalazar was too shy to lift her voice in song in public.
The high school junior from Argentina was born with a cleft (唇裂), so expressing herself vocally was difficult while she was growing up. The other children laughed at her for the way she spoke, and she struggled to feel like she fit in.
Sofia was fitted a bulb (咽球) that fit inside her mouth to help her form accurate sounds. While Sofia began to make great progress in speaking clearly, she still felt embarrassed around her classmates.
During school lunches, she didn’t want any of them to see her remove her bulb in order that she could eat. She would slip into the bathroom before the meal to remove it, and then remain silent throughout lunch while her classmates chatted and laughed all around her. The process made her feel lonely even when she was surrounded by others.
When she was 15 Sofia learned that Smile Train, the world’s largest cleft charity, would sponsor local professionals at nearby Notti Hospital to perform the operation she had waited so long for. She was overjoyed at the prospect of removing her bulb for good and living a confident life.

After Sofia shared a few verses of her favorite song in a Smile Train video, something truly remarkable happened. Sebastian Yatra, the Colombian singer and songwriter who wrote the hit, saw the video and recorded a special message just for her! According to the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), six red wolf pups (幼崽) were found in North Carolina’s Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge last week. That’s great news for endangered red wolves, and marks the first time these pups have been born in the wild since 2020.
Long ago, red wolves lived all through the US Southeast. But as the wolves were hunted, and as more and more land was taken over for cities, roads and farms, the wolves began to die out.
In 1973, a new law called the Endangered Species Act was passed, which was designed to protect animals that were in danger of dying out, like red wolves. At the time, there were only about 17 red wolves remaining in the wild.14 of those wolves were caught and fed by researchers to protect them. Then, the FWS conducted a program called the Red Wolf Recovery Program. But by 1980, red wolves were believed to have been extinct in the wild.
Luckily, the wolves did well under people’s care, and their numbers continued to grow. Soon the FWS began releasing red wolves back into the wild. Those wolves with tracking collars spread out, paired up, and began to have pups. By 2012, red wolf numbers had hit a new high point of about 120 wolves in the wild. The program’s success led to many other programs aimed at bringing animals back from the edge of extinction.
Sadly, though, wild red wolf numbers began to drop again. Some wolves were shot and others were hit by cars. As the number of adults fell. the number of pups being born also began to drop. In 2020, a total of four pups were born in the wild. In 2021, 2022 and 2023, no wild pups were born at all.
So the news that six pups hatched in the wild this year is a huge boost. But the good news isn’t an accident.
8. How did the FWS protect red wolves
A. It made a new law to protect them. B. It kept them in the wild.
C. It moved them into a new habitat. D. It carried out a recovery program.
9. What is partly responsible for the reduced number of red wolves in recent years
A. The lack of food B. The worsened weather.
C. The illegal hunting. D. The loss of forests.
10. What will be talked about in the following paragraph
A. The accidents that happened this year. B. The effort the FWS has made.
C. The wishes from the researchers. D. The health condition of the pups.
11. What can be a suitable title for the passage
A. Endangered Species Act Taking Effect B. Red Wolf Pups Decreasing in the US
C. Endangered Red Wolf Pups Born in the Wild D. Future Faced by Endangered Red Wolves
D
Poppins is a new Netflix-like streaming service designed to support children with autism (自闭症). Autism influences the development of the brain and leads to various challenges in social communication, as well as people’s behavior and interests. “Many autistic children are visual (视觉的) learners, meaning they get information better through visual information. Therefore, we’ve made special TV shows and videos,” said Gilad Piker, the founder of Poppins. With the use of visual technology, Poppins mixes special programs with special users’ experiences.
“It all started with my nephew when he was 15,” explained Gilad Piker. “He began to suffer from autism at the age of 5.” Piker noticed the boy watched cartoons and simple kids’ movies for hours, but what excited him even more were the opening logos and rolling credits (滚动字幕) at the end of a show. “When he saw them, he would stand in front of the screen. Maybe he thought it was the most exciting film he’d ever seen!” Piker added.
Poppins’ specially designed TV shows and videos can offer chances for autistic children to learn social skills, such as turn-taking, sharing, and proper behavior in various situations. Autistic children are likely to find comfort and relaxation during the watching experience. Some programs also enable them to learn new words, sentences, and storytelling skills, supporting their language development and communication abilities.
Proper selection and parental guidance are important when parents add TV shows and videos to an autistic child’s daily schedule. Each child is unique and interest is the best teacher, so parents should think wisely and choose suitable programs when determining the benefits of screen time.
“Through Poppins, autistic children can now watch educational and entertainment programs that can meet their special needs and interests,” Piker said. “Seeing those children enjoy watching the programs provided by Poppins is an amazing experience. It reminds me of the power of technology to change lives.”
12. Why are Poppins’ special programs carried out
A. To meet the learning needs of autistic children. B. To help autistic children learn new technologies.
C. To recommend interesting TV programs to the public. D. To teach children how to make friends.
13. What did Gilad Piker realize from his nephew’s experience
A. Autistic children’s ability to stay focused.
B. Autistic children’s interest in special visual information.
C. The common behavior problem of autistic children.
D. The importance of spending quality time with autistic children.
14. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The ideas for the design of Poppins.
B. How Poppins’ programs benefit autistic children’s growth.
C How educators can help improve children’s social skills.
D. The ways to encourage autistic children to use Poppins.
15. What are parents advised to do when choosing visual materials for children
A. Consider children’s preferences and interests. B. Seek guidance from experts and teachers.
C. Be familiar with children’s daily schedule. D. Think about the time spent on screen.

I’ve lived in the new house for a few weeks. While the weather’s warm, I take my coffee out to the backyard. It wasn’t easy separating from my husband and uprooting the kids from the only home they ever know. I moved to suburbia but luckily it wasn’t the natural wilderness. There are trails (小路) in these woods, maintained by the homeowners’ association. Everything seemed to be fine, but I wasn’t sure if I picked a good place to be our new home until a wander (漫步) in the woods.
One afternoon, curious to know what was in my woods, I put on long pants and boots and announced that I would wander in the woods and find the trail. I would look for signs of life in my woods. My daughter wanted in. My son was busy showing all his toys to his grandfather, who had come to visit us.
My daughter and I went out. Without much trouble, we found the trail and one of the most amazing trees on the earth. It was like a banyan tree with many trunks shooting out from the ground. My daughter immediately climbed it and declared, “This is the fairy tree!” She threw her arms in the air, and I shot a picture. She was in rain boots and wore a sports suit, looking perfect among the woods. Soon, she found an open space with some fallen trees and declared it the “play area”. She climbed the fallen tree trunks and jumped off them sending up a puff of dust.
We kept going. Unexpectedly, we heard the sound of some children. My daughter practically felt excited at the sound of children’s play. We followed the path and found three boys were happily building a wooden house, “Hi!” my daughter shouted, “I’m new here!”

C. The wishes from the researchers. D. The health condition of the pups.
11. What can be a suitable title for the passage

C. How educators can help improve children’s social skills.

【答案】 Hearing a girl’s voice. the three boys felt surprised at first. One of the boys looked my daughter up and down for a few seconds. Then with a bright smile on his face, he asked, “Are you interested in joining us ” My daughter’s eyes glittered with delight on hearing this. Together, they collected branches, sticks and leaves and busied themselves building a wooden house. Obviously, they were enjoying themselves. Watching them, I couldn’t help thinking woods and kids just belonged together. Time passed quickly. It was almost dark before we finally came back.
When we happily got home at dusk, my dad and son were waiting for us worriedly. I apologized for our coming back so late, but my daughter looked excited. “I have so much fun in our woods today and there are so many secret play areas!” she told her brother proudly. Her brother was so jealous of her that we promised to take him adventuring in the next morning. Sensing children’s happiness, my uncertainty about moving to the new house finally gave way to a feeling of satisfaction. Anyway, we are in our new home, with our new woods to explore.
