A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost.
57.How can a certain kind of ants find their way
A.By imagining the way.
B.By counting their steps.
C.By bringing food together.
D.By walking through a forest.
剖析 1.读题干,画关键词“a certain kind of ants”。
2.定位原文“A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost.”,由此可推知一些蚂蚁可以通过数步数来避免迷路。3.选项B中的“count their steps”是直接信息,与原文相同。故选B。
2.词性变换
典题2 (2023·广东中考) Please prepare two pieces of paper. All paper will work, but your DIY fan can be used for a long time with quality (优质的) paper.
52.Why is quality paper a good choice to make a fan
A.It is light. B.It is colorful.
C.It lasts long. D.It looks beautiful.
剖析 1.读题干,画关键词“quality”。2.定位原文“All paper will work, but your DIY fan can be used for a long time with quality (优质的) paper.”。 3.分析选项。原文中的“for a long time”意为“长时间”,long在这里是形容词,表示折扇耐用。选项中的“last long”意为“维持的时间长”,long在这里是副词,同样表示折扇耐用。此处形容词变成了副词,但是表达的含义相同。故选C。
3.同义替换
典题3 (2023·广东中考) We can put on hats, wear light clothing, or stay at a cool place. However, nothing can beat a good fan.
51.Which is the best way to keep cool according to paragraph 1
A.Putting on hats.
B.Using a good fan.
C.Wearing light clothing.
D.Staying at a cool place.
剖析 1.读题干,画关键词“cool”。2.定位原文“We can put on hats, wear light clothing, or stay at a cool place. However, nothing can beat a good fan.”。 3.分析原文可知,没有什么能比得上一把好扇子,即天热想保持凉爽的最佳方式就是使用一把好扇子。本句和“Using a good fan.”所要表达的意思一致。故选B。
4.化繁为简,简单推断
典题4 (2023·广东中考)However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities...Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.
59. What are people advised to do according to the last paragraph
A.To help animals.
B.To travel at night.
C.To keep city lights on.
D.To develop unusual abilities.
剖析 1.读题干,画关键词“people”。2.定位原文“However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities...Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.”。3.分析选项。“To help animals.”是间接信息,把原文进行简化之后可以得知本段说的是人类的一个小举动可能对动物意义重大,因此是建议人们要帮助动物。故选A。

Imagine this: When you sit down and begin to eat a tasty tomato, suddenly it starts to cry! While this thing will never really happen, a new study showed that plants can make sounds when they are stressed.
Researchers from Tel Aviv University in Israel did the study. They used ultrasonic microphones (超声波麦克风) to record the sounds of tomato plants in boxes.
Three groups of plants were listened to: One group wasn't watered for five days, another group had the stems (茎) cut off, and the third group was untouched. It turned out that the first two groups made sounds 30 to 50 times per hour, while the untouched group only made the sound once per hour. “When tomatoes are not stressed at all, they are very quiet,” Hadany from the team told CNN.
The researchers don't know how the sounds are made, but they believe the noise comes from the breaking of air bubbles (泡) in the plants. This means the noise produced by the plants is not on purpose.
Animals and insects may benefit from the sound. For example, the sound can tell a butterfly that the plant is under stress and not a moderate place to lay eggs on. An animal that wants to eat a plant could also use the sounds to make decisions, according to Science Focus.
After the experiment, the researchers listened to other plants such as rice, corn and grapes, and found they also made more sounds when they felt stressed. Researchers said the study can help farmers in the future, as they can better take care of farm by “hearing” how plants feel.

(原创) February 21 is International Mother Language Day, which was named by the United Nations (联合国) in 1999. According to the Linguistic (语言学的) Society of America, there are now 6,909 known languages around the world. In China, most people speak Chinese as their mother language. More people speak Chinese than any other language in the world. About one fifth of the world's population speaks Chinese.
The earliest known written record of Chinese is the Oracle Bone Inscriptions (甲骨文) of the Shang Dynasty (17th century BC—11th century BC). Most Chinese characters are ideograms (表意文字) which combine two or more words together to make a new one, for example, the Chinese character jia (家) looks like “a pig under the roof ”. This shows that people in ancient times thought of home as a place to hold fortune.
Some common new words can be found in the latest Xinhua Dictionary, such as dishi (的士) for taxis, xiu (秀) for TV shows. As time goes on, although hundreds of thousands of words have developed, only a few thousand of them are used in people's everyday life. Fangnu (房奴) means “slaves of one's house”.
With China's fast economic development, more and more people from other countries are becoming interested in Chinese. In a survey in the US, 2,007 people were asked “Which foreign language would you like to learn ”. The result showed Chinese placed second after Spanish.
Confucius Institutes (孔子学院) around the world are more popular than ever. More than 300 colleges in over 90 countries have Confucius Institutes.

考题3 词义猜测题
【提分技巧】
词义猜测题主要考查学生根据上下文推测词义的能力,要求考生根据上下文理解画线单词,用另一个词或短语替代、解释画线单词的意思。猜测词义是阅读中一项重要的技能。词义猜测题常用的提问句型有“What does the underlined word ‘...’ in Paragraph ×× probably mean ”“What's the meaning of the underlined word ‘...’ in Paragraph ×× ”“The underlined word ‘...’ in this passage means ”等。
【技巧1】同义反义猜词义
即通过比较找出同义词、反义词来猜测词义。
典题1 (2023·佛山三模) She also learned from previous research on eatable water bottles. Based on the past research, she improved the method and made her bottles bigger and able to last for a longer time.
What does the underlined word “previous” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Great. B.Past.
C.Common. D.Interesting.
剖析 词义猜测题。根据原文中的“Based on the past research, she improved the method and made her bottles bigger and able to last for a longer time.”可知,这里指从以前的研究中学习,所以“previous research” 与后句中的past research同义。故选B。
【技巧2】因果逻辑猜词义
根据因果关系来猜测词义。
典题2 (2023·江门二模) The parachutes we see in our daily lives seem complicated. But it's not too difficult to make a simple one.
What does the underlined word “complicated” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Basic. B.Simple.
C.Easy. D.Hard.
剖析 词义猜测题。根据原文“The parachutes we see in our daily lives seem complicated. But it's not too difficult to make a simple one.”可知,我们在日常生活中看到的降落伞似乎很复杂。但做一个简单的并不难。but连接的是两个表示转折的分句。complicated指的是“复杂的”,与hard“困难的”意思相近,故选D。
【技巧3】根据构词猜词义
根据构词法(前缀、后缀、词根)来猜测词义。
典题3 (2023·深圳三模)As for being brave, police officers are not always fearless. Even now, when I face dangerous people, I still get scared. But our sense of responsibility gives us the courage to keep going.
What might the word “fearless” in the last paragraph mean
A.Good at everything.
B.Not afraid of anything.
C.Very careful.
D.Being a part of a team.
剖析 词义猜测题。fear的意思是“害怕的”,less是否定后缀,具有否定(不,无)的意思,一般加在名词后,构成形容词。据此猜测fearless的意思是“不怕的;无畏的”。故选B。
【技巧4】定义释义看举例
通过列举事例来猜测词义或句意。
典题4 (2023·广州三模)They may be feeling anger, fear or sadness, but they conceal the emotion—not willing anyone to know how they really feel.
The word “conceal” in Paragraph 4 probably means “ ”.
A.Express B.Change
C.Show D.Hide
剖析 词义猜测题。根据破折号后的内容“not willing anyone to know how they really feel”可知,他们不愿让任何人知道他们真实的感受,由此推知是隐藏情绪,conceal与hide意思相近。故选D。
【技巧5】依据语境猜词义
根据上下文语境来猜测词义。
典题5 (2023·惠州二模) This art experiment showed that when there are no rules, people can have strong destructive power.
What does the underlined word “destructive” in Paragraph 3 mean

【随堂练习】
All through grade school, I got extra help with schoolwork. If I got a D, I was very happy. If I got a C-minus (C-), I had achieved greatness. A's and B's were a kingdom I could never enter.
Once my teacher, Miss Mills, had given me a list of ten spelling words. My mother and I went over the list until I knew those words. I felt great. I thought, “Wow! This time, I'm going to pass.” The next day, I went into the classroom and began to write down the words. The first word was carper. I wrote that one down:c-a-r-p-e-t. I was feeling pretty confident. Then came neighbor—I wrote down the letter n. Then rhythm—I knew there was an r. Suburban—I wrote s-u-b. My confidence failed me. I had gone from 100 percent to maybe a D-minus. Where did the words go
Some people talk about information sliding off your brain. That was my life. I was an underachiever (后进生).
Now I know I have dyslexia (诵读困难症). A person with dyslexia might see “the” as “teh”, and “bird” as “brid”. My brain learns differently. A learning disability can really change the way you feel about yourself. Now I know that even if I learn differently, I can still be filled with greatness.
Today when I visit schools as an actor, director, and co-author of children's books, I tell children that everyone has something special inside. It's our job to find out what that is and get it out, and give it to the world as a gift.
( )1. What's the writer's problem in grade school

( )3. The underlined phrase “sliding off” in Paragraph 3 probably means .

Everyone has their hard times throughout their lives. I also had such a hard time. My spoken English used to be a big challenge for me—both in my study and in my life. Though I could get good grades in English exams, I didn't dare to communicate with others in English.
Our school organized a Sino-foreign exchange activity last year. When I saw my classmates speak English well and chat cheerfully with those foreign students on the stage, I envied them at that moment because I also wanted to make friends with foreigners. Outside the school, I was in a similar predicament (困境). While I was traveling abroad, I was upset when some friendly English-speaking locals tried to talk with me.
In order to change all of this, I made up my mind to improve my spoken English. I changed my attitude (态度) towards my flaw (缺陷). As Charlie Chaplin, one of the most famous comedians ever, once said, “You have to believe in yourself. That's the secret of success.” No one can complete something without confidence (自信). So I decided to take an active part in different kinds of English activities and bring myself to give speeches in front of all my classmates.
Chances only prefer the prepared mind. Through a whole year of efforts, I've made great progress in my spoken English and I'm no longer afraid of speaking English in public. Never say never! If I can make the impossible possible, so can you. Face difficulties with courage and overcome them, and you will finally achieve success.

【随堂练习】
(2024·江苏连云港中考改编)Did you know that vocabulary (词汇) is more important than grammar If you have good vocabulary, you can communicate successfully, even if the grammar is not completely perfect.
However, one common problem is learning new words and then forgetting them. So when you want to use a new word in a conversation, you can't remember it at that moment. Does this often happen to you The reason for this difficulty is that most students try to learn vocabulary by studying lists and dictionaries and remembering the words. But it may not work if you don't have a very good memory.
The best way to learn vocabulary and remember the words successfully is to learn new words and use them at once. You can do this with a very simple exercise. Every time you learn a new word, for example, from an English lesson or an article, write it down in your vocabulary notebook. Writing is more active than just reading a definition (释义). You should write the word, the definition in English or translation—one example sentence from the article or dictionary and one example sentence from your own creation.
Imagine you just learn the word “generous”, write in your vocabulary notebook: generous (adjective), definition—giving or willing to give freely. Example one, from the article: Thanks for paying for my dinner. You're very generous. Example two, my example: My brother is generous because he volunteers at the animal shelter on weekends. It's best if your example sentences are true to your life, because this creates a personal connection with the new word. The next day, read your vocabulary notebook again and try to add one more example sentence using the new word. It's helpful for you to remember it. These two simple steps—writing the word and using it at once—help you remember and use new words.
Do you have a vocabulary notebook If not, start now.
( )1.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A.The problem. B.The new word.
C.The conversation. D.The dictionary.
( )2.What's the correct order of the following steps of taking vocabulary notes
①Make your own example sentence.
②Write the word, its English definition or translation.
③Copy an example sentence from the article or dictionary.
④Read your notebook again and add one more example sentence.
A.②③①④ B.②③④①
C.③④②① D.③②①④
( )3.How can we make the best example sentences according to the writer
A.By asking for help from friends.
B.By explaining words' definitions.
C.By connecting them with our life.
D.By adding words from the article.
( )4.What is the best but simple way to learn a new word
A.Writing the word.

  典题1 (2024·广东)Jerry is a world-famous mountain climber...
“... Am I doing something helpful How can I turn my adventures into something that can help the world ”

...
For Jerry, this kind of adventure is most satisfying. “Such adventures had made us see life in a different way. Now, being the best climber isn't important for me. What matters is doing something helpful while climbing the mountains. There is still much more we can do.” Jerry said to a newspaper.

【技巧2】三性法
  三性法即“概括性、针对性、醒目性”。概括性——文章的标题必须具有高度的概括性,切忌“以段概篇”;针对性——文章的标题必须针对文章,否则就会出现答非所问,风马牛不相及的现象。醒目性——标题要能抓住读者的眼球,吸引读者的注意力,让读者一看到标题就有想读文章的欲望。
典题2 (2024·广东模拟)There is a lot of trash. Scientists think that 8.8 million tons of plastic winds up in the ocean every year. How does it get into the sea Plastic left on the ground as litter often blows into creeks and rivers, eventually ending up in the ocean. And because plastic trash is different from other types of waste—it doesn't decompose (分解) back into nature like an apple core or a banana peel—it stays in the ocean forever. That means fishing nets thrown into the sea can trap animals and harmful straws can be mistaken as food.
20.What is the best title of this passage
A.How to Use Plastic
B.A Story of a Sea Turtle
C.Plastic Pollution
D.Plastic Saves Lives
剖析 A、B、C、D选项均符合醒目性的原则,但是只有C“塑料污染”高度概括了文章的内容。故选C。
【技巧3】词汇复现法
在一些短文当中,有些核心词汇会不停地出现。文中反复出现的观点或词汇,一般是体现文章主旨的关键信息。因此学生在把握文章的大意和中心思想的基础之上,可以根据文中反复出现的核心词汇来归纳文章的标题。
典题3 (2024·广东模拟)Climate change is a big problem humans are facing. How can we deal with it Reducing carbon emissions (碳排放) is important. But what if we could capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air and use it to do other things
Recently, SpaceX founder Elon Musk said that his company is working on a new program. It's going to take CO2 out of the air and turn it into rocket fuel.
“It will not only be good for Earth, but will also be important for Mars,” Musk said. The air on Mars is made up of 95 percent of CO2. If we could turn CO2 into fuel, we could travel the long journey from Mars back to Earth in the future.
The idea may sound strange but it's not totally crazy. There are already some technologies that might help with this. According to Di-Jia Liu, a chemist at the Argonne National Laboratory in the US, the carbon atoms (原子) in CO2 and the hydrogen (氢) atoms in water can be combined to make methane (甲烷) or ethanol (乙醇). They could be used as fuel. If we do this on Mars, energy from the sun might be used as a catalyst (催化剂).
The idea will also make space travel more eco-friendly. “If the CO2-based fuel could be used in a rocket launch, we could prevent 715 tons of CO2 from being emitted into the air,” said Stafford Sheehan from Air Company, a US company that focuses on CO2 capture technologies.
25.What is the best title of the passage
A.Visit Space with CO2
B.Climate Change We Face
C.Space Travel in the Future
D.A New Program on Mars
剖析 全文出现最多的词汇就是CO2,并且选项A的意思概括了文章大意。故选A。

Since the early 1980s, Miao has recorded rural scenes (乡村场景) with his brush. In 1987, his works made their way to an exhibition (展览) held at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (中央美术学院) in Beijing. “I had 19 works at the exhibition, and the academy put them in a gallery.” It was then that one of his friends told him to keep painting to have enough works to hold a personal exhibition in Beijing. He made it after three months, during which he created more than 60 paintings in his room at night. The personal exhibition marked the takeoff (迅速发展) of Miao's career (事业) as a painter. He held personal exhibitions in Beijing in 1989, 1991 and 1993. Somebody even has paid 2,000 dollars for a painting of his.
