Nathanael Lessore’s latest book, King of Nothing, is about growing up. The story is based on his life as a person from Peckham, London, born to French and Madagascan parents.
To Lessore, Peckham is a warm and friendly place where most of his family live, but it hasn’t always had this reputation (名声). In 2001, due to fightings in the area involving young people, there was a “push to get kids off the street” and into community centers. Similarly, in King of Nothing, the main character Anton keeps getting in trouble and his mum makes him join an activity club called the Happy Campers. At first Anton hates it but then he makes an unlikely friend and starts to see the power of a community working together.
Lessore is one of eight children and describes his family as a “big bustle” (place of exciting activity). As a kid, he remembers his mum taking him and his siblings (兄弟姐妹) to the local library to keep them busy. “Little did my mum know she was doing us a huge service because she was putting us in the presence of books.”
Lessore also gets inspired by slang (an informal way of speaking used by a group of local people) he hears on London’s streets. “I don’t travel on public transport with headphones so l can overhear conversations.” If he hears an interesting phrase or word he saves it up and puts it down and constructs them in his book.
In King of Nothing, Anton discovers that what others think of him is not as important as he thought. Lessore repeats this when giving advice to young readers. “Popularity means nothing”. His advice is to read, travel and be kind. The world is so big. There is so much to see. And, just like exploring new places, pursuing writing as a career “is not impossible...it’s achievable”.
4. Why was Anton required to join the Happy Campers
A. His bad reputation. B. His misbehavior.
C. The community command. D. His poor education.
5. What has a deep effect on Lessore’s success
A. His growing surroundings. B. His exposure to abundant books.
C. The interest in social activities. D. The influence of his siblings.
6. What can we know about King of Nothing
A. It comes from a real story. B. It tells about a mother’s struggle.
C. It inspires readers to be writers. D. It stresses the function of the community.
7. What did the author want to convey
A. Reputation plays an important role. B. Enjoyment comes first.
C. Enrich and fulfill yourself. D. Travel to explore the unseen.

A ground-breaking study led by Dr. Mark Wong of The University of Western Australia, has provided the first global picture of insect activity patterns across the fundamental day-night cycle.
Through the extensive research, they’ve finally been able to provide a definitive answer to the age-old question of whether there are more insects out at night than during the day. Their global analysis not only shows that insect activity rises by a third (31. 4%) during the night on average, but reveals key factors driving patterns in insect activity across the Earth.
The activity patterns of insects across the day-night cycle were a surprisingly deficient area in ecology, because such patterns cannot be detected by common methods used for sampling insects. For example, sweep netting can catch only active insects, while light traps do not work as well during the day as they do during the night.
The researchers overcame this challenge by identifying studies that sampled insects during the day and night with traps that specifically caught moving insects. After combing through thousands of studies they identified 99 studies spanning from 1959 to 2022, which had used these methods to document insect activity pattern across diverse landscapes. The total number of insects observed exceeded 3 million individuals.
Nocturnal (夜间活动的) activity was more common in rivers and streams. In this habitat, there could be twice as many insects active during the night. In contrast, land-based insects generally had higher day activity, especially in grasslands, where the number of insects out could be three times during the day.
These contrasting patterns in ecosystem may reflect strategies for predator (捕食者) avoidance. Fish tend to hunt insects during the day, whereas nocturnal animals such as bats make life on land at night. The analysis also highlighted the influence of environmental factors such as temperature on insect activity at the global scale. They found peak levels of nocturnal activity in the warmer regions of the world, as more insects likely sought shelter from the heat of the day.
8. What does the study focus on
A. The species of insects. B. The living habits of insects.
C. The insects’ day-night cycle. D. The decline in insect number.
9. How did the researchers come to the conclusion
A. Using creative ways to catch active insects. B. Analyzing some documented data in history.
C. Travelling to diverse landscapes to obtain data. D. Comparing the data they got during day and night.
10. What does the underlined word “deficient” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Blank. B. Understudied. C. Well-explored. D. Debatable.
11. Which of the following may explain the insect activity patterns
A. Physical structure. B. Habitat changes.
C. Human’s hunting preference. D. Ecological influences.
D
For a lucky 32 percent or so of humans, happiness may seem like a matter of good genes. That's because their DNA encodes(解码) for certain personality quality, like outgoing and low anxiety, which are closely linked to increased levels of life satisfaction. In studies of twins, those genetic differences help explain why one twin was happier with their life than the other.
But a happy life isn't entirely determined by genetics. For the most part, your happiness is impacted by environmental and behavioral factors, aspects of your lives over which we can exercise some control. And there are more direct ways to boost our happiness level, too.
Often referred to as “positive psychology, ” a growing body of evidence suggests there are interventions that can teach people happiness skills, like how to be more compassionate with themselves, or how to enjoy positive experiences. Some emphasize reflecting on your personal strengths and values. Others involve thoughts or connecting with others. Admittedly, none will lead to excitement—but they can make a meaningful difference in your life.
A researcher Lyubomirsky compares learning happiness to creating exercise habits; a routine that has to be practiced frequently. One strategy she recommends is writing thank-you letters to people in your life.
But there's no magic set of practices, though. That's why Lyubomirsky says it's important to find techniques that work for you. If a thank-you letter gets boring or isn't your thing, try calling a friend or thinking.
But neither genes nor clinically tested exercises can protect people from the reality that life is hard. During the pandemic, Santos found herself overworked, exhausted and nearly close to burnout. She was fortunate enough to take a holiday and practice the strategies. The experience has been an important reminder for Santos that even the most scientifically supported exercises can't help if you don't do them.
“The strategies I teach work, ” she says. “But you have to make sure you' re following them and putting them into practice, which takes regular work and effort. ”
12. Which factors mainly influence people's happiness most
A. The inborn personality aspects. B. The education that people receive.
C. The living environment and habits. D. The interpersonal relationship.
13. How can we learn to be happy
A. Explore our shining points. B. Compare with other people.
C. Appreciate all our life experiences. D. Think for others instead of ourselves.
14. What does Santos suggest people do
A. Write thank-you notes to their parents. B. Take a break to relieve their burden.
C. Find a method suitable to them and stick to it. D. Read more books to get the practical techniques.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Train yourself to be positive. B. Say no to negative influences.
C. The importance of psychology. D. The secret of personality quality.

Two years ago, 20-year-old Rutledge was driving on her way to work when she saw the blue lights flashing behind her. From the rear mirror of her car, she noticed a police officer coming up to her. As she pulled over to the side of the road, her heart beat up in her ears with anxiety, because she knew she had done the wrong thing at the wrong place and time.
Brown, a police officer, approached and intended to give her a speeding ticket. Rutledge acknowledged her mistake and expressed that she was very sorry. And then, she told Brown that she was broke, and didn't have the money to pay a speeding ticket.
Most people have a story about talking their way out of a ticket, and Brown has probably heard it all before. But what was his response He didn't charge her for the speeding ticket. Instead, he asked Rutledge to have a talk with him about her situation. What Rutledge didn't know was that it would be one of the best things that ever happened to her.
Their talk went on for about 10 to 15 minutes, just sitting in the car. Rutledge told Brown that she was stuck in a dead-end job and didn't know what to do. Then, they talked about different career choices. To his credit, Brown provided guidance and motivation to Rutledge. He helped Rutledge figure out where she was going in the future. After the talk, their conclusion was that Rutledge would make a great nurse. If one can believe it, Brown even convinced her that she should apply for a nursing school.
At last, Brown let her off with just a warning. “Promise me you'll go to a nursing school. Slow down and I won't give you a ticket, ” he said.

In King of Nothing Anton discovers that what others think of him is not as important as he thought.

Determined to change her life, Rutledge researched nursing schools and found one that suited her. She worked hard, balancing her job and studies, driven by the promise she made to Brown. The journey was challenging, but the thought of a better future kept her motivated.
Two years later, Rutledge invited Brown to her graduation ceremony. She wanted to thank him for the pivotal role he played in her life. As she walked across the stage to receive her diploma, she spotted Brown in the audience, clapping proudly. After the ceremony, Rutledge approached him with a heartfelt thank you. Brown smiled, saying, “I knew you could do it.” Rutledge realized that sometimes, a simple act of kindness and guidance could change a person’s life forever.
