College visits are important. Before you commit years of your life and money to a school,be sure you're choosing a place that is a good match for your personality and interests. You can't get the “feel” of a school from any guidebook,so be sure to visit the campus. Below are a few tips for getting the most out of your college visit.
Explore on Your Own
Of course you should take the official campus tour, but be sure to allow time to hang around on your own. The trained tour guides will show you a school's selling points. But the oldest and prettiest buildings don't give you the entire picture of a college. Try to walk the extra mile and get the complete picture of the campus.
Read the Bulletin Boards
When you visit the student center, academic buildings and residence halls, take a few minutes to read the bulletin boards. They provide an easy way to see what's happening on campus. The ads for lectures, clubs and plays can tell you what's going on outside the classrooms.
Eat in the Dining Hall
You can get a good feel for student life by eating in the dining hall. Try to sit with students if you can. Do the students seem happy or stressed? Also,is the food good? Are there adequate healthy options? Many admission offices will give prospective students coupons(优惠券)for free meals in the dining halls.
Visit a Class in Your Major
If you know what you want to study,a class visit makes a lot of sense. You'll get to observe other students in your field and see how involved they are in classroom discussion. Try to stay after class for a few minutes and chat with the students to get their impressions of their professors and major. Be sure to call in advance to schedule a classroom visit-most colleges don't allow visitors to drop in at class unannounced.
Talk to Lots of Students
Your campus tour guide has been trained to market the school. Try to talk to students who aren't getting paid to impress you. These important conversations can often provide you with information about college life that isn't part of the admission script. Few university officials will tell you if their students spend all weekend drinking or studying, but a group of random students might.

As a child, I never considered myself an athlete at all as I was very uncoordinated (不协调的). However, I did love to run because I felt as if I was flying but this all changed two years ago when I suffered a knee injury. I was bedridden for two weeks and I had a difficult time moving even short distances. I literally cried myself on my way to the car for a few days.
When therapy wasn’t working well for me, I signed up for a hot yoga class for girls, Bikram Yoga to be exact. Starting a yoga practice was truly a godsend because it helped me gain strength in my knees but, most importantly, yoga helped me attain a more peaceful state of mind, body and spirit.
Since each class was heated to 105°F, every time I stepped foot in the yoga studio, I’d feel a surge (涌起) of negative thoughts come upon me like a big ocean wave. Some of these thoughts were, in the beginning of my practice, so strong that I walked out of the class several times. However, as the months passed by, I noticed that when I didn’t get swayed away by my negative thoughts, I could stay in the hot room for longer.
After 3-4 months of practicing hot yoga, my arms and legs were beginning to get definition. I also woke up with so much more energy than I had before starting my yoga practice and I gradually started shedding the pounds from my body. Yoga literally made me feel as if I’d taken a shot of energy drink and just gave me that burst that helped my knees heal and made my overall health better.
As I saw some of my classmates do poses that looked appealing to me I started to think maybe I could do them too. Therefore, yoga helped show me that I have no real limitations physically unless I set those limitations myself through eating junk and thinking in negative limiting terms.
Also, practicing yoga in front of a mirror helped me connect with myself and practicing with a group of people really helped me to feel a greater sense of connection with humanity whereas before I didn’t. Overall, this yoga practice has helped me to see I’m part of a bigger picture in life!

Many of us like to eat out and treat ourselves to delicious food. We are used to choosing hearty (丰盛的), fat-filled dishes and sugary desserts, which are not easily cooked at home.
The recent rise of light meals, however, gives us a smarter choice. According to Economic Daily, low-calorie, low-fat and high-fibre meals have become popular in China’s restaurants and online delivery platforms.
The country saw a rapid increase of restaurants concentrating on light meals, from just 600 in 2017 to more than 3,500 in 2018. According to a report published by Meituan, a major online food delivery platform, the number of light meals ordered online also rose 75 percent from the previous year.
Having a light meal, however, doesn’t mean eating only vegetables. Different from the meat-free lifestyle, a typical light dish avoids oily, salty and spicy food. Instead, it contains things like boiled meat, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Healthy nutrients(营养物)are the theme of the light meal.
These dishes are useful for keeping healthy and controlling your weight. That’s probably why so many people, especially the youths are into them. They see it as “a great way to avoid getting fat,” wrote the Telegraph.
“After eating several light meals, I now prefer light flavours,” Zou Jing, a college teacher in Wuhan, told China Daily. She shared a picture of her lunch: a mixture of beef, eggs, corn, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes.
These changes in eating behaviour are connected to deeper changes in how people think about food, says Walter Willett, chairman of the nutrition department at the Harvard T.Chan School of Public Health, US. “Diet quality, not quantity, is important for both weight control and long-term well-being,” Willett told The New York Times.
So the next time you have a party with friends, try a light meal. It will satisfy not only your stomachs but maybe also your hearts.

Confucius said, “In a group of three people, there is always something I can learn. Choose to follow the strengths of others, and use their shortcomings to reflect upon ourselves.”
As you can see from what Confucius said, everyone that we come across can teach us something useful. As long as we reflect on the lessons learnt from and by other people,we can continuously improve ourselves. But take note that when you reflect on these lessons, you apply some wisdom to each lesson because each situation is unique although they share some common principles.
We can learn a lot from everyone. We always tend to think that we can only learn from those who are higher in status or have more knowledge than us, but that is not really the case. We learn from those who are lower in status than us as well, because the experience and knowledge of each person is very different.
The best thing about this type of learning, reflecting other people’s strengths and shortcomings onto ourselves, is that we do not to pay for the mistakes that are made. The only cost to us is the time that is needed to learn about and reflect on these lessons from other people’s lives.
As we all know, some mistakes can be ones which people cannot afford to make, for instance, a broken friendship or a financial loss. Thus constantly using other people’s strengths and shortcomings to reflect upon ourselves makes us realize the costs of these mistakes and reduces the possibility that we will make similar mistakes.
What can we do now to learn from others By keeping our eyes and ears open. Be observant and able to realize what strengths and shortcomings other people have. A lot of people in this world like to complain about their lives. Listen to them and make your own assessment and from your own assessment, reflect upon your life and make improvements where necessary.
51. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true
A. Confucius thought we should learn from strengths of others.
B. Only from those who have more knowledge than us can we learn
C. It is by reflecting on the lessons learnt by others that we can improve ourselves.
D. Reflecting upon other people’s strengths and shortcomings can help us make fewer mistakes.
52. The underlined part “this type of learning” in Paragraph 4 probably refers to________
A. learning from other people’s mistakes
B. learning from others experiences
C. finding what strengths and shortcomings other people have
D. reflecting others strengths and shortcomings onto ourselves
53. From the fifth paragraph, we learn that________.
A. sometimes we can afford the costs of a broken friendship
B. our reflection will necessarily reduce our mistakes
C. some reflection will help to improve ourselves
D. reflection will stop us from making any mistakes in life
54. The passage is probably taken from________.
A. a magazine about life B. a book about travel
C. an advertisement D. a research report
55. What does this passage mainly talk about
A How to improve oneself.
B. How to use the shortcomings of others to reflect upon ourselves.
C How to reduce the mistakes in one’s life.
D. How to learn from other people’s strengths and shortcomings.

Advertising is all around us and it seems to have become an unavoidable part of our life. Digital marketing experts estimate that most Americans may be exposed to around 4, 000 to 10, 000 advertisements a day.
You may think you will never fall for an ad and be persuaded to buy something, but read the article first before you decide!
While direct hard-sell ads might be easy to detect — such as those for products endorsed (宣传) by celebrities — soft-sell ads may be more difficult to spot. One such method advertisers use is to make customers believe there is an immediate need to buy the product using words or phrases such as hurry, act now, last chance, now or never.
These are not the only methods, of course. Other methods include giving away samples and sponsorship of events, In fact, there are many methods which work for different products in different places. Gillian Greene, Creative Director of Cheesy Bee, an advertising agency in London, confirms this, stating their adverts are tailor-made (特制的) according to the situation.
Not all ads are directed towards the end customer. Advertising agencies will make adverts with the investors (投资人) and shop owners in mind. An impressive and expensive ad may signal to the investors that the ad agency is successful and they may then be encouraged to invest in it. Similarly, shop owners are more likely to stock (囤积) well-advertised products because they know customers are more likely to buy them. In this way, ads can help sell products even when they are not directed at the customer. Ads work in all stages of a business and, perhaps, that is the success of advertising.

“After eating several light meals I now prefer light flavours,” Zou Jing, a college teacher in Wuhan, told China Daily.

【答案】Dear Chris,
I’d like to share a piece of good news with you.
Next week, an activity called BookCrossing will be held by our School Youth League Committee. As its name suggests, BookCrossing means books are passed from one to another. Students can place their favorite books in public areas, and those interested can pick them up for reading, before putting them where they were.
It is without doubt a meaningful activity which can not only help students get into the habit of reading, but also contribute to promoting certain virtues among participants, such as sharing and taking good care of others’ items. Apart from that, BookCrossing conveys the message of environmental protection by encouraging borrowing books instead of buying new ones.
I will be more than delighted if you get involved in this activity. I can make a promise that it will benefit you beyond your imagination. Come and join us! You won’t regret it.
Yours,
Li Jin
