Internet is a great invention for us, and there are many wonders of the web.
Google Works Miracles
COOGIE (www.) is a daily miracle to millions of people. If the Internet had only this very fast search engine, it would have justified its existence many times over. It is the most popular search on the web with a 54% market share, ahead of Yahoo! You type almost anything, however unclear, into the space provided and in a second it has come up with hundreds of references. If knowledge is power, then Google commands the gateway.
Yahoo Becomes Giant
YAHOO (www.) was the first wonder of the web, and in many respects, it still is. It started in January 1994 when we California graduate students, Jerry Yang and David Filo, started compiling (编译) a database of links, mainly for their personal use. But well before the end of the year, it had become recognizable as Yahoo we know today. In the past seven years, Yahoo has grown rapidly, partly through a long string of buys. Yahoo offers almost everything you could want: emails, instant messages, chats, clubs, photo albums, and a lot more.
eBay Enables Everyone to Buy and Sell
eBay (www.ebay.com), which deals with online trading and shopping services, is the most impressive large Internet company where people buy and sell goods and services worldwide. It has, for instance, opened a global marketplace in which people from Beijing. San Francisco, or Moscow can bid against each other for products put up for sale by someone in London. The company’s online service permits sellers to list items for sale, buyers to bid on items of interest, and eBay users to browse through listed items that is available online seven days a week.
Amazon Makes Buying a New Experience
Amazon (www.amazon.com) started out as an online bookstore, constantly putting up new book titles it offered for sale. In the late 1990s. Amazon had more than four million titles after adding CDs, videos, DVDs and games. It continued to add new lines of business including toys, computer software, electronics, like power tools, home improvement products and online sales. For regular users, Amazon has made itself the shortest possible path between wanting and buying.
36. What is Google mainly used for
A. Commanding the gateway. B. Searching for information.
C. Storing reference books. D. Providing extra space.
37. “Rome is not built in one day” but Yahoo is built in one ________.
A. year B. day C. month D. minute
38. What goods did Amazon sell when it started its business
A Videos and games. B. Different books.
C. Power tools. D. Home improvement products.
39. Which of the following is TRUE
A. Buying and selling can only be done through Amazon
B. If you type unclearly, Google will refuse to do the searching.
C. Yahoo owns more market shares than any other company on the web.
D. eBay company’s online service is always there for its users.
40. What’s the best title for the passage
A. Four Websites sample B. Websites Work Miracles
C. Four Wonders of the Web D. Websites and Daily Life

The first time I lost my best friend, I thought it was the end of the world. I don’t mean that he died, he just went away, but I still measure all pain by how hurt I was when Danny left.
I was blessed with a happy childhood, one that most people would want to have. We lived in a small house in a tiny village in Scotland and we were a very close family. Our neighbours next door had a son named Danny, and we grew up together.
We spent long summer evenings in the pine forests, digging up worms for fishing, and collecting feathers left by the birds in the cages where they had been kept for the hunters. It was here that I discovered that I was allergic(过敏的) to the tiny flies which bit me and made my face swell. There were a few walnut trees above the village and we would chase the animals away and wait for them to ripen. Of course, it was too far north for a proper harvest. On windy days we’d slide down the stony slopes(斜坡) to the bay and feel the waves of the sea in our faces.
Danny was a good carpenter(木匠) too, and we made brooms out of branches, which we tried to sell in the village shop. We built a tree house, where we smoked our first cigar, and I was sick! Once I slipped on some damp leaves, fell out, cut my arms and the heel of my foot, so he washed my wounds in the stream. My mother simply blamed me for tearing my underwear.
We were on good terms with everyone in the village, and we even gave a salute(敬礼) to the local policeman as he passed on his bicycle. But in our imagination, he was an enemy soldier, and we were two spies looking for secrets.
It was the finest friendship anyone could have, and life seemed perfect.
And then at the age of 14, his parents moved to London, over 400 kilometres away. The pain was real, and I couldn’t forgive Danny for leaving me. I felt he had abandoned me.
It was the worst loss I have ever experienced.
I’m now back in touch with Danny, and it’s an honor to call him my friend. We’re both much more mature now, and we’re still very alike.
But while I miss the happy times we spent together many years ago, I’m ashamed of my feelings, and I don’t want to rewind the recording of my life and remember my loss and my pain.

One of our biggest fears nowadays is that our kids might someday get lost in a “sea of technology” rather than experiencing the natural world. Fear-producing TV and computer games are leading to a serious disconnect between kids and the great outdoors, which will change the wild places of the world, its creatures and human health for the worse, unless adults get working on child’s play.
Each of us has a place in nature we go sometimes, even if it was torn down. We cannot be the last generation to have that place. At this rate, kids who miss the sense of wonder outdoors will not grow up to be protectors of natural landscapes. “If the decline in parks use continues across North America, who will defend parks against encroachment (蚕食) ” asks Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods.
Without having a nature experience, kids, can turn out just fine, but they are missing out a huge enrichment of their lives. That applies to everything from their physical health and mental health, to stress levels, creativity and cognitive (认知的) skills. Experts predict modern kids will have poorer health than their parents — and they say a lack of outside play is surely part of it; research suggests that kids do better academically in schools with a nature component and that play in nature fosters (培养) leadership by the smartest, not by the toughest. Even a tiny outdoor experience can create wonder in a child. The three-year-old turning over his first rock realizes he is not alone in the world. A clump of trees on the roadside can be the whole universe in his eyes. We really need to value that more.
Kids are not responsible. They are over-protected and frightened. It is dangerous out there from time to time, but repetitive stress from computers is replacing breaking an arm as a childhood rite (仪式) of passage.
Everyone, from developers, to schools and outdoor citizens, should help regain for our kids some of the freedom and joy of exploring, taking friendship in fields and woods that cement love, respect and need for landscape. As parents, we should devote some of our energies to taking our kids into nature. This could yet be our greatest cause.
46. The main idea of Paragraph 2 is that ________.
A. kids miss the sense of wonder outdoors
B. parks are in danger of being gradually encroached
C. Richard Louv is the author of Last Child in the Woods
D. children are expected to develop into protectors of nature
47. According to the passage, children without experiencing nature will ________.
A. be less healthy both physically and mentally
B. be over-protected by their parents
C. keep a high sense of wonder
D. change wild places and creatures for the better
48. According to the author, children’s breaking an arm is ________.
A. the fault on the part of their parents
B. the natural experience in their growing up
C. the result of their own carelessness in play
D. the effect of their repetitive stress from computers
49. What does the underlined word “cement” in the last paragraph mean
A. Weaken. B. Strengthen. C. Lower. D. Decease.
50. In writing this passage, the author mainly intends to ________.
A. blame children for getting lost in computer games
B. encourage children to protect parks from encroachment
C. show his concern about children’s lack of experience in nature
D. inspire children to keep the sense of wonder about things around
D
“Girls are weak, and boys are strong. This is what is being subconsciously communicated to hundreds of millions of young boys and girls all over the world, just like it was with me,” said American actor Justin Baldoni. As a boy, all he wanted was to be accepted by other people. That acceptance meant he had to pretend to be strong when he was weak, confident when he felt insecure, and tough when he was actually hurting.
Is that a healthy lifestyle A member of the CPPCC Standing Committee might say “yes”. In his proposal, he spoke of a need to “prevent the feminization of male youths”. In response to his call, China’s Ministry of Education has recently demanded that schools should hire more physical education teachers and improve teaching methods to cultivate masculinity in students.
The response has been widely debated online, with many people saying that it reinforces gender stereotypes. The state broadcaster CCTV wrote on its Weibo account, “Education is not simply about cultivating men and women. It’s more important to develop a willingness to take responsibility.” You might be wondering now: What is masculinity, and why is this so controversial
Well, by itself, “masculinity” refers to the qualities traditionally considered to be typical of men. While there is not really a single “correct” set of qualities, the term is often associated with strength, courage, assertiveness, and emotional control. Sometimes, however, these seemingly admirable qualities can be extended in unrealistic ways. But boys are also human. Blindly asking them to control their feelings “like a man” can only increase their stress when they grow up.
As an educator who has spent years teaching in China, I agree that attaching more importance to physical education would definitely benefit students. Sports provide opportunities for physical fitness. More importantly, they can help develop lifelong skills, such as leadership and communication skills. However, putting the emphasis on masculinity is far from a sound reason for which to do so.
It is unnecessary for all boys to build up their muscles, but it is essential that they all learn how to be strong inside. It is also fine for boys to cry and to show their weakness. Schools should work on equipping students with the skills and values they will need to be successful in life, not reinforcing stereotypes of masculinity borrowed from a bygone age.
51. Why did young Justin Baldoni think it necessary to pretend to be what he was actually not
A. He was trying to be strong and confident.
B. He wanted to be accepted as a real man.
C. It was necessary for an actor to be strong and tough.
D. He felt it secure and safe to do so.
52. The underlined expression “masculinity” in Paragraph 2 most probably means “__________”
A. manly qualities B. potential abilities
C. self-centredness D. steady strength
53. What is the argument against the demand of China’s Ministry of Education
A. It is necessary to prevent the feminization of male youths.
B. Physical education should be paid more attention to.
C. We should teach students according to their individual qualities.
D. Importance should be attached to developing students’ sense of responsibility.
54. What can we learn from the passage
A. Masculinity is out of date.
B. Masculinity is overstated.
C. Masculinity shows physical strength.
D. Masculinity only focuses on physical fitness.
55. What does the author want to say in the article
A. We should do everything we can to guarantee students’ health.
B. Schools should differentiate between boys and girls while educating them.
C. It is important to prepare students with necessary skills and right values.
D. It is time to weaken stereotypes of masculinity.

第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,按照要求用英语回答问题。
My name is Brooke Parsons, and the story of my life is different. One day, in April, 1993, I was home alone when I had a stroke. When my parents came home, they took me to the hospital to learn what lay ahead for all of us. The stroke has left me with permanent brain damage. The doctors suggested I quit school. However, I chose the opposite.
After returning to high school, I learned very slowly. I had to decide whether or not to complete the twelfth grade in 2 years. Thinking I would fail if I chose to do it in one year, finally I made my decision. The staff at school were very supportive and helped me through the rough times. Finally, I graduated from high school. Graduating from high school was a huge achievement for me. That was an opportunity for me to be really proud of just how far I had come with all the odds I had to beat.
I can now walk, talk, dress myself, feed myself and be the independent person I am today. I have achieved my VCE and I am now at university, studying to be a social worker. I have been a scholarship winner. I have become a life-long member of the local musical band. All of these achievements are beyond my imagination. Now I am even in a novel called Second Chances by Neil Mitchall.
I could have easily listened to the doctors when I first had my stroke, but I decided I was going to prove them wrong as they did not know me, nor did they know just how determined I would be.
It’s a big world out there. I have done and achieved so much and never once will I allow the odds to get the better of me, as there is still a whole lot more things out there for me to do. I love life and I am living it to the maximum

A. He lost Danny forever.
B Danny abandoned him.
C. Danny moved away from their village.

【答案】46. D 47. A 48. B 49. B 50. C

【答案】Dear Jim,
My name is Li Jin, a senior student from Chenguang High School. On behalf of all the students of Senior Three, I’m writing to express our sincere gratitude for your online lecture.
After attending your lecture on English learning, the students of Senior Three have achieved a lot. The approaches you taught not only enable us to memorize new words more quickly and easily, but also help us increase our reading speed, making us become more confident in the coming College Entrance Examination. Despite your helpful tips, there are still a couple of things that confuse us. For example, we always get stuck and feel depressed in face of the unfamiliar words in the reading comprehension. We were wondering whether you can help us guess the meaning and understand the passage precisely. What’s more, it couldn’t be better if there will be any way to improve our writing. I’m fully convinced that your advice will be of great help to us.
I’d appreciate it if you could offer more suggestions on our English learning. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Jin
