National Geographic Explorer Paul Salopek is walking from Africa to the tip of South America. He is following the path our human ancestors took out of Africa about 200,000 years ago.
Salopek has named his journey the Out of Eden Walk. As he walks through different countries, landscapes, and cultures, Salopek is documenting what he sees and hears. And he isn’t walking alone. During each part of his walk, Paul is joined by a local guide. Along the way, he meets people from small villages, cities, and country farms. Sometimes, they give him a place to stay for a night or two. Often, his hosts share a little bit about their lives with him.
The Out of Eden Walk is well-named. Besides a few rides on boats or ships, Salopek is walking the entire way. No cars. He doesn’t even ride bikes, though he does use pack animals. An important part of Salopek’s mission is to tell the stories of ordinary people. Walking gives him more time to look around and to talk to the people he encounters. He has spoken to thousands of people since his walk began. As he puts it, “I am in a seven, eight, nine-year-long conversation with total strangers.”
Following a story is not new for Paul Salopek. He is a journalist. He has written for The Atlantic, the Chicago Tribune, National Geographic, and other publications. His works have earned many awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes.
As a journalist, Salopek would often fly into an area to cover a story and then quickly leave again. But he felt he was missing part of the story and wanted to dig deeper. The Out of Eden Walk was born from this desire. Salopek calls it slow journalism. The goal is to deeply explore some of the major news stories of our times by talking to ordinary people who are affected. As Salopek describes it, “It is about slowing down enough to actually inhabit the stories of the day and to get to know the people who are behind the headlines.”
24.What is the Out of Eden Walk
A.It is the latest penned work of Paul Salopek.
B.It is a toured long walk across the continents taken by Paul Salopek.
C.It is a ship journey from Africa to the tip of South America.
D.It is a new fashionable way of travelling through different countries.
25.What does Salopek think of the conversation with strangers
A.Time-wasted. B.Discouraging. C.Challenging. D.Fruitful.
26.Why did Paul Salopek start the Out of Eden Walk
A.To finish his work for the Pulitzer Prizes.
B.To unearth the deeper part of the major news stories.
C.To explore the best headlines for the journalism.
D.To interest the readers in the ancient ordinary people.
27.What do we know about slow journalism
A.Efficient and meaningful. B.Influential but informal.
C.Humorous and relaxing. D.Realistic and worthwhile.

Over a decade ago, the science fiction series Black Mirror showed a story about using artificial intelligence to bring back loved ones. Thanks to technological advancement, the latest AI resurrection technology brings hope of recreating loved ones through virtual form.
Recently, it was revealed that renowned musician Tino Bao had created a digital version of his daughter, who in 2021 passed away due to a rare disease at the age of 22. With the help of Xiaoice, Microsoft Asia’s AI branch based in China, Bao was able to recreate his daughter Bao Rong as an AI-powered virtual figure. Tino Bao, his family and the team went to great lengths to piece together pictures, audio-visual recordings, and narrated memories of Rong. After thousands of trials and errors, they presented the life-like digital human who speaks in both Mandarin and English. Bao has finally launched a company to bring the technological miracle to other families experiencing such loss.
However, this technological achievement has also been accompanied by many controversies. The idea of bringing back a loved one through AI may seem comforting. Still, researchers caution that constantly interacting with an AI version of a deceased loved one could potentially affect the natural grieving (悲伤) process, leaving individuals stuck in a state of denial. This could lead to prolonged grief and other mental health issues. Furthermore, there’s a risk that people may become overly dependent on the technology, prioritizing their interactions with the AI version over forming new, real-life relationships.
With the case of Bao Rong out in the open, AI resurrection has become a business. From simple “talking pictures” that sound nothing like the loved ones to deepfake videos of actors speaking with the faces of those who passed away, the lower end of the market is more “artificial” than “intelligent”. Therefore, it is crucial to establish proper regulations and ethical standards to ensure that the use of AI-resurrection technology is safe and responsible.
28.What does the underlined word “resurrection” in para.1 most likely mean
A.The combination of memories and technology.
B.The process of improving AI technology.
C.The development of new virtual forms.
D.The act of bringing something back to life or existence.
29.What is a possible consequence of constantly interacting with an AI version of a deceased loved one
A.It may cause people to forget the real memories of the loved one.
B.It may prolong the natural grieving process and cause mental health problems.
C.It may prevent people from using other AI technologies.
D.It may lead to the decline of the AI industry.
30.Which of the following statements about the future of AI resurrection technology is correct
A.It needs proper regulations and ethical standards to ensure safe and responsible use.
B.It will eventually replace traditional ways of memorizing loved ones.
C.It will be completely banned due to ethical concerns.
D.It will develop healthily without proper regulations.
31.What is the main idea of the passage
A.The introduction of the science fiction series Black Mirror.
B.The benefits and controversies of using AI to recreate loved ones.
C.The process of creating an AI version of a loved one.
D.The development of AI technology in the field of music.

China’s young people have created yet another word to reflect their growing disappointment with the stressful work culture. The new lifestyle hot word, tang ping, is an action rather than a feeling — deciding to just go by, using a minimum effort at an unsatisfactory job.
Wendy said that her lying-down philosophy could be summed up as “Putting the peacefulness of the body and soul first.” “According to the mainstream standard, a good lifestyle must include working hard, trying to get good results on work evaluations, struggling to buy a house and a car, and having babies,” she said, “However, I am looking forward to ‘lying down entirely’ — quitting my job and living off my savings.”
Tang ping has come under fire from Chinese state media. “No matter what, young people must have confidence in the future,” read a newspaper. “China is the world’s most populous country, with rich labor resources and a huge market advantage. The only happy life is a hard-working life. “The lying-down community obviously isn’t good for the country’s economic and social development,” said Guangming Daily. However, the newspaper added that tang ping shouldn’t be ignored without reflection: if China wants to encourage hard work in the young generation, it should first try to improve their quality of life.
“The state is worried about what would happen if everyone stopped working,” said Huang Ping, a literature professor. “But humans aren’t merely tools for making things,” he said. To lie down is a reasonable choice rather than a negative attitude.
For some young people, it’s a way for them to reduce pressure. “When you can’t catch up with society’s development — say, high house prices — tang ping is actually the most practical choice.” he said.
Lying down can be seen as the opposite of involution (内卷), referring to societies becoming trapped in continual cycles of competition. “In a relatively good social environment, people may feel involuted, but at least they’ re trying” he said. “If it’s worse, people will tang ping.”
Alternatively, the more motivated among the young generation have accepted FIRE— “Financial Independence, Retire Early”— in the hope of someday escaping the severe competition once and for all.
32.What is Wendy’s goal in life
A.To keep up with society’s development. B.To get promoted in her company.
C.To depend on her savings to live. D.To be highly evaluated at work.
33.What do state media think the young should do
A.Improve their quality of life. B.Base their future on hard work.
C.Reflect on China’s development. D.Live a happy life by lying down.
34.What does Professor Huang think of the “lying down” style
A.It removes the heavy life pressure from the young.
B.It prevents the development of society.
C.It motivates the young to welcome their future.
D.It means low quality of life for the young.
35.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs
A.A healthy society doesn’t involve competition.
B.Young people prefer involution to tang ping.
C.Severe competition is the main cause of lying down.
D.More active young people favour severe competition.

Research by psychologist Carol Dweck suggests that there are two basic mindsets that influence how people think about themselves and their abilities: the fixed mindset and the growth mindset.
People who possess a fixed mindset believe that things such as intelligence are unchangeable. Those with a fixed mindset believe that success isn’t a result of hard work— it’s simply a result of talents. 36
Those who have a growth mindset, on the other hand, feel that they can change, grow, and learn through effort. 37 When things get tough, they look for ways to improve their skills and keep working toward success.
By taking baby steps, anyone who wants to can change one’s mindset from a “fixed” perspective(视角) to a “growth mindset”. Here’s how:
Acknowledge and accept imperfection in self and others. 38 Our imperfections make us unique. And self-love is a good thing.
Speed is not important. 39 Instead, you fully engage and put effort into the process, no matter how long it takes. By the way, focusing on the process often also improves results, because you did put a lot of effort in along the way.
40 People with growth mindsets don’t believe that failure is a reflection of their abilities. Instead, they view it as a valuable source of experience from which they can learn and improve. “That didn’t work,” they might think, “so this time I’ll try something a little different.”
By choosing to make the extra effort to build a growth mindset, you can make your mental processes work for you, resulting in a greater likelihood that you get the results you’re looking for and live the life you want to live.
A.View failures as learning experiences.
B.Believe that your efforts matter.
C.They tend to give up more easily in the face of a challenge.
D.We all have our short-comings and weaknesses — our imperfections.
E.When you have a growth mindset, the end results are less of a focus.
F.People who believe that they are capable of growth are more likely to achieve success.
G.What works for you might not work for someone else.

第二节 (满分20分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“You should go for it,” Artie said, giving my shoulder a squeeze as we stood gazing at the poster. ‘Cinderella— auditions(试镜) this Thursday after school,’ the words proclaimed.
“Me ” My voice came out as a frightened squeak. “Come on, Amy. You probably know the entire play off by heart. You are the best person for Cinderella.” he encouraged. I knew he was joking, but the truth was, I could tell you every single line(台词) in the play.
When we reached the hall on Thursday, I began to wish I hadn’t signed up to be Cinderella. It was easier to feel hopeful several days ago when my name was the only one on the sign-up sheet. Since then, seven other girls have added their own names to the list, including Sherry Anderson, the head cheerleader(拉拉队长).
Luckily, we were given a moment to practice before the auditions began. “Good,” Mr Cordoza said approvingly as he stopped by and listened to my practice. I felt a glimmer of hope. “Now let’s see how you get on performing on the stage in front of everyone.” He clapped his hands for attention, signaling the start of the auditions.
Sherry Anderson was up first. She showed great confidence as she tossed her long blonde hair and recited her lines. Although she lacked an understanding of the lines, her performance was attractive.
Then it was my turn. As I climbed the stairs to the stage, I tripped, nearly falling flat on my face. I felt my cheeks burning.
“When you’re ready,” Mr Cordoza said, sounding impatient.
“Sorry,” I mumbled. I tried to calm my breathing, but the nerves tightened in my throat. “I…I…” I stuttered. ‘Speak up Amy, can’t hear you!’ jeers and whistles came from the back of the hall. I could feel that my performance was a disaster. Even Sherry’s lines were better than mine. Finally, I limped to the end of the scene, and as soon as it was over, I rushed off the stage, feeling defeated.
As I made my way through the hallway, I spotted Artie waiting for me.
