Kris Bowers, a famous musician and film maker, grew up playing the piano through Los Angeles Unified’s music program. But it was only a few years ago that he learned about the people who repaired the musical instruments (乐器) that brought him and so many other students joy and support over the years.
The film The Last Repair Shop, directed by Bowers, pays attention to those people who have repaired more than 130,000 students’ instruments for free--work that has started in a L. A. shop since 1959.
For Bowers, making the film was a meaningful job. He learned about the work of Steve Bagmanyan, a worker who tuned(调音) the pianos in Bowers’ primary and middle schools. “I was able to thank someone who helped me a lot on my way to becoming a musician,” Bowers says.
Besides Bagmanyan, who is one of four workers, each personal story intersects(交织) with a piece of L. A.and maybe even United States history. Dana Atkinson, who works in the strings division, shares his story. Paty Moreno, the only female worker in the shop, talks about her journey moving to the U. S. from Mexico and raising her children here. She says her job in the repair shop helped her have a peaceful life. Duane Michael fixes the woodwind instruments and talks about his time on tour with Elvis in the past.
Directing the film gave Bowers a chance to mix his love for music and his city. “Having that deep love for this city and having accidentally discovered this music repair shop and this program make me very proud of the city,” Bowers says.
The film has already brought attention to the repair shop. There is now a $15 million fundraising effort set up by the LAUSD Education Foundation to help keep the program running and invest(投资) in future instrument workers.

A.The long history of Los Angeles. B.The stories of instrument workers.

26.What does the repair shop get from the film
A.People’s attention and support in money. B.Much praise from well-known musicians.
C.The growing need for instrument repairs. D.More chances to join musical programs.
27.What is the text mainly about
A.A music program in Los Angeles. B.A film maker named Kris Bowers.

Exploring China is not easy even for experienced travelers, but the history teacher Jessica Gerard from Ozarks Technical Community College (OTC) knows from experience the trip is worth it. Since 2008, she has led five groups of students across China to study its culture and history.
Gerard often tells her students that the trip is not a vacation but an academic(学术的) course. “Anyone interested in the trip must take an online course about the history of China before they go,” she said. “And, most importantly, students continue to learn while in China. They’re advised to listen to guides, keep a diary and write about their experiences after the trip.”
OTC student Ross Weis believed his experiences in China were better than anything he could have learned in the classroom. In fact, it was his great interest in China that led him to go on the trip to China. “I’ve always been drawn to China and its rich cultural history,” Weis said. “My dad studied history in college, and I think that might have some influence on me.”
Of all the cities and historical sites Weis visited, he said nothing could top his experience at the Great Wall. “I’d read about the Great Wall and seen it on TV, but it is so different to go there and actually experience it,” he said. “It wasn’t as old as I had thought it to be. That was pretty cool.”
Every OTC group Gerard has taken to China has been led by her trusty tourist guide, Jim Lieu. Gerard plans her trips directly through Lieu, which keeps travel costs down for students. “Lieu and I have an excellent relationship with one another. He always knows what I want for my students, and I know what he can do,” said Gerard. “He strongly believes that in order to build a better world, people around the world should get to know each other through travel.”
28.Why did Gerard organize the students to travel to China
A.To help students have a happy vacation.
B.To give students more travel experiences.
C.To teach students culture and history of China.
D.To provide students with an interesting life outside of school.
29.What should the students do before their trip to China
A.Take part in online learning. B.Talk with the guide personally.
C.Share their experiences of the trip. D.Write a diary about their preparation.
30.What made Ross Weis take the trip to China
A.His love for travel. B.His interest in China.
C.His teacher’s invitation. D.His father’s encouragement.
31.Which of the following best describes Jim Lieu
A.Brave. B.Patient. C.Helpful. D.Humorous.

Hundreds of thousands of babies’ lives could be saved in Uganda, an African country, each year thanks to a Liverpool doctor’s invention.
The Babysaver, developed by Professor Andrew Weeks, a doctor from Liverpool, is a simple plastic unit(器件) where babies can be resuscitated (使恢复知觉的) without having to be taken away from their mothers. It costs only $40 and power free, and the aim is to make sure that it can be used in every hospital in Uganda.
Other expensive facilities need electricity. But it is often unavailable(不可获得的) for the thousands of babies born at home in the villages far away from cities.
Professor Weeks explained, “Each year about six million babies across the world need basic newborn resuscitation and around 900,000 of these babies stand no chance. This mostly happens in poor families. When resuscitation is needed, it often happens away from the mothers, or even in another room, which can be very anxious for the mother. The Babysaver enables resuscitation to take place at the bedside, allowing doctors and nurses to stay with the worried mother at this intense time for her.”
The product has been developed with the help of Dr. James Ditai and Peter Watt, who are good at designing, after many experiments with doctors and patients at the Mbale Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) in Uganda. Peter said, “We believe it will be a game-changer for families across Uganda.” Dr. Kathy Burgoine, Head of the Neonatal Unit at MRRH, said, “We are happy to be supporting Professor Weeks and his team in this project. The unit is a life-saver and will change the way newborn resuscitation is carried out in our hospital and other places.”
The project has been funded by Grand Challenges Canada, which offers enough money to develop projects in poor countries in the world, and the Sir Halley Stewart Trust, a charity that supports innovative and pioneering social and medical projects.
32.What is an advantage of the Babysaver according to the text
A.It is not simple. B.It is not expensive.
C.It is for family use. D.It is electric-powered.
33.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to
A.Home. B.Village. C.City. D.Electricity.
34.How did MRRH support Professor Weeks
A.By changing games. B.By providing money.
C.By doing experiments. D.By designing Babysaver.
35.What is Dr. Kathy Burgoine’s attitude toward the Babysaver
A.Doubtful. B.Worried. C.Unclear. D.Hopeful.

Having a dog is good for your health. 36 You need to organize your day well and adjust(调整) it for your dog’s daily walking needs. Here are some safe dog walking tips.
37 Of course, the situation may happen when you badly need to go, for example, to a shop and then you have to leave the dog on a leash(狗链). But you must not often leave the animal like this because you endanger its life. And the dog can be a danger to people on the street.
Pick less visited places. When choosing a place for walking with a dog, you had better pick less visited squares and parks, and other less popular areas where there are only a small number of people. 38
Take the best number of walks in a day for your dog. Though even just one walk every day may be enough for smaller dogs, high-energy dogs will need more than that. 39 The question of how much time to walk is also important. The best choice is to prepare at least 40 minutes for a walk with your dog.
Take your dog to meetups. Dogs enjoy meetups with other dogs. Plan dog meetups and group-walks for your dog to play with other dogs. Walking in a group means you get to share experiences with other dog owners as well. 40 So take your dog out to meet up with other dogs. It is good for their health.
A.Never leave your dog alone on walks. B.So you need to know your dog and find out its energy level. C.The best dog owners are those who often go to different shops. D.However, walking your dog can cost you much time. E.Social meetups help make sure that your dog becomes a friendly pet. F.These are safe places to do fun outdoor games for your dog.
