At 11:45 pm on March 19, Vinod Kapri, a former TV journalist and award-winning filmmaker, was returning home from a dinner. As he was driving along Golf Course Road in the northern Indian city of Noida, near New Delhi, he spotted a kid racing along in the dead of night.
Kapri was alarmed at first—it was late and he was running so fast. So he slowed down and opened a window. The boy turned out to be 19-year-old Pradeep Mehra, who had just finished his work at McDonald’s and was returning home. Once it was evident that nothing was wrong, Kapri offered to drop the teen home, but Mehra politely turned him down and, without missing a beat, kept on running.
Surprised by his refusal. Kapri took out his cellphone and started filming their conversation because he could tell that there must be a story behind the midnight run. Mehra explained that he fell into the habit of running at midnight to keep fit so that he could achieve his dream of joining the army to serve his country. Kapri said the conversation left him deeply in awe of young Pradeep Mehra.
When asked if his regular midnight run was ever disturbed by cars, Mehra said, “I haven’t had too much of a problem with cars. But people are a different story! My midnight running habit does make people curious. Many have stopped to ask me why I run at this time of night, while others have made fun of me. There’s a lot of sarcasm (讥讽) too—I am warned that running like this will only get me chased by dogs. No matter what others say, I just smile at them. I’ve always believed that hard work has its own rewards, and that one day, I will reach my goal and succeed.”
Kapri came to help but instead left inspired. After asking permission to post the video, Kapri uploaded the recording, a little over 2 minutes, to his Twitter account. Kapri’s ending caption—“Run Pradeep run, to your brighter destiny”—touched many viewers.

Sixty-six years ago, there was only one human-built object in Earth’s orbit (天体轨道). It was the world’s first satellite. Try to guess how many human-made objects are circling the planet now. Ready
Your answer is wrong, unless you guessed 100 trillion (万亿). That’s a jaw-dropping number. For years, the junk has formed an ever-growing mass near the Earth. The researchers are calling for a global agreement to limit the number of satellites and the amount of rubbish in space.
There are 9,000 active satellites in orbit. That could grow to more than 60,000 by 2030. The rest of that 100 trillion figure includes debris—everything from old rockets to accidentally dropped tools, and even paint chips (碎片). Don’t think a paint chip is harmless. Traveling at 17,500 miles per hour, it can strike a spacecraft hard; causing dents (凹痕) and holes. All of the debris will eventually fall to the Earth and burn up in the atmosphere. But we’re replacing the junk more quickly than its falling.
Heather Koldewey, an ocean biologist, says, “Cleaning up space has a lot in common with the challenges of addressing environmental issues in the ocean.” Heather and her coauthors see hope for space. They look to the effort to clean up the oceans. In March 2022, nearly 200 countries signed a global plastics treaty at the United Nations. This is an agreement to throw less plastic in the ocean and deal with what’s already there. There could be similar rules for how much debris a launch (发射) can create. And technologies could be developed for cleaning up the rubbish.
Years ago, scientists on the International Space Station tested the Remove Debris satellite. Tracking the location and speed of floating debris, it used a net to catch the junk, which fell and burned up in the Earth’s atmosphere. The test was a success. It may have brought the world a step closer to a safer orbit.
28.What does the underlined word “jaw-dropping” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Correct. B.Specific. C.Shocking. D.Declining.
29.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.The makeup of space debris. B.The whole description of space scenery.
C.The reasons for dealing with space junk. D.The number of satellites circling the Earth.
30.Why does the author mention plastic pollution in the ocean
A.To compare the junk in space with that in the ocean.
B.To prove space debris could eventually reach Earth’s oceans.
C.To show the space cleanup can be inspired by the ocean cleanup.
D.To argue that the ocean cleanup is harder than the space cleanup.
31.What do we know about the Remove Debris satellite
A.It indicated the possibility of reducing space debris.
B.It provided data on the size and speed of space debris.
C.It effectively removed a good deal of space debris from orbit.
D.It encouraged international cooperation on launching satellites.

If you’ve never heard of a biophilic city (亲自然城市) before, you probably will soon—there’s a growing movement globally.
A biophilic city is a city where the planning and design largely integrate (融合) the natural world into the daily lives of residents. It’s based on the idea that humans have a deep love for nature and desire to connect with nature.
“We describe the idea of biophilic cities as immersive (沉浸式的) nature—nature is not just something to be found in a park here and there that you have to walk to, but rather we need to reimagine the city as a park, or as a forest,” says Tim Beatley, a professor of sustainable communities. “There is a renewed appreciation for how essential nature is in cities and how it can help to make them more beautiful places.” Beatley says. “We know, for instance, that cities face great pressures from climate change—a key response must be nature and nature-based solutions, such as cooling cities with trees and urban forests.”
Beatley’s colleague. Peter Newman, also a professor of sustainability, says he has devoted nearly 50 years to activism, research and teaching how to make cities more sustainable He made a film with Beatley, called “Singapore: Biophilic City”.
Singapore is seen as an exceptional biophilic city. “In our film we show how biophilic values began with the first Prime Minister of Singapore saying that the environment in the city was as important as the economy.” says Newman, who got the idea of making the film after he spent some time in Singapore teaching a course. “Singapore is one of the best examples in showing that you can accommodate city development and population growth and also actually protect nature as well,” says Newman. Greenery is woven throughout the city, not only in many parks, but integrated even into the design of tall buildings.
“Singapore has now officially changed its motto from ‘Singapore, Garden City’ to ‘Singapore, a City in a Garden’,” says Beatley.
32.What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 2
A.To explain a concept. B.To put forward an idea.
C.To provide an example. D.To introduce a general rule.
33 What can we infer from Beatley’s words in Paragraph 3
A.Parks in cities need to be renewed.
B.Biophilic cities face many problems.
C.It is difficult to imagine a city as a park.
D.Nature should be a key factor in city planning.
34.What does Newman’s film mainly focus on
A.The unforgettable experience in Singapore.
B.The rise of tall green buildings in Singapore.
C.Why Singapore chooses to be a biophilic city.
D.How Singapore balances the economy and the environment.
35.What might be the best title for the text
A.Singapore: a garden city B.Turning cities into gardens
C.The future of biophilic cities D.Nature: a solution to climate change

Gratitude is more than just saying “thank you” to someone who has helped us or given us a gift. 36 . And this positive emotion can be good for our health—our emotional and physical health, as well as the health of our relationships.
Let’s start by looking at the mental health benefits of expressing gratitude. There have been many studies showing that writing a gratitude letter to another person improves mental health. One reason for this is that gratitude stops us from thinking about negative emotions over and over again. 37 .
But even if we don’t share our writing with anyone, the act of completing the exercise alone makes us happier and more satisfied with life. 38 . As we are essentially training our brain to be more in tune with noticing the posit ve, after several weeks or months, this becomes more intuitive (直觉的). And so, the more we express gratitude, the more positive we feel.
39 . There are studies linking a gratitude practice to better sleep quality, better eating habits, and reduced inflammation (炎症) in people who have had heart problems.
So gratitude is clearly good for us, but is it also good for the people in our lives
The simple answer is yes. Gratitude is about feeling valued and helping others feel valued too. 40 And that’s on top of all the other ways—be it with family, partners, friends or even colleges. Maybe we should all stop counting sheep or counting calories and start counting our blessings instead.
A.And this gets better with time.
B.Gratitude appears to have a lasting effect.
C.Gratitude can also make us feel good in our bodies.
D.Feeling valued can help build stronger relationships.
E.People who regularly express gratitude are more patient.
F.It redirects our attention so that we focus on positive emotions.

I fell seriously ill when I was twelve and I was in hospital for the better part of the summer. For the first week or so, I was so uncomfortable that I did nothing but sleep. As I started feeling better, I wanted to keep engaged. I read too quickly for my mom to keep me in books and wasn’t really interested in television either, so my mom was desperate (绝望的).
One day, she accidentally hit on one of the most popular trends of the time: making bead (珠子) animals. She bought me a lot of silk thread (丝线), a big bag of beads in every color of the rainbow, and a book that taught me how to make all different types of animals. I got the hang of it quickly, and enjoyed making bead animals, such as snakes, rabbits and turtles.
One morning, one of the nurses came in, saw me working on a beaded keychain, and praised it warmly as cute. She was one of my favorite nurses, so I offered her one. and she quickly attached the keychain to her ID badge (徽章). An elder nurse asked for one, so I gave her one, too, and then my doctor… and then it seemed like everyone wanted one! I started spending most of my time making them. My mother felt bad that it was turning from a hobby into a burden (负担), but I truly enjoyed it and wanted to make something for everybody who’d been so nice to me when I was sick.
The nurses proudly wore them on their badges, which not only made me smile but also made the other patients smile. Joy was brought into the wards (病房), making us more cheerful. The head nurse also received such a gift and she appreciated it so much. She told me the children in other wards kept asking her where she got it.
