Whenever I ask to go to the movies, my mom’s first response is always “No!” When I want to go dancing, she adds a firm “No! No! No!” for emphasis. She claims she is only trying to protect me from what she calls “bad elements”.
On a sunny day, Mom rejected my request to go to West Indian Day Parade and insisted I accompany her as she worked cleaning a large house. I followed her to a grand dining room, watching her apply lemon-scented polish to the furniture. I imagined my friends dressing up in fancy costumes, enjoying the celebratory time at the parade. I glared at my mother, hoping she could feel the anger I was directing her way.
But as I watched, my emotions began to change. I noticed how tenderly she rubbed her dusting cloth along a large piano in the corner. “Is this like your piano in Guyana, Mom ” I asked. “Yes. This baby grand piano is exactly like the one my Dad bought me when I was your age.” Her sigh was full of longing.
I knew that my mother had been a talented pianist. I vaguely recalled dancing under the piano when she practiced for hours every day. Now she could barely play for our church choir because her fingers were gnarled from so many days spent cleaning other people’s homes.
“Stop!” Mrs. Smithers, the homeowner, yelled, “That’s a very valuable instrument!”
“I am well aware of that.” she said slowly, “I play for my church.”
“But that’s not a church-music piano. We play classical music on that piano.”
I watched as my mother’s eyes narrowed and her face tightened. I felt the same tightening in my chest.
“You don’t know anything about us ... or pianos!” I screamed. Immediately I worried I had done something wrong, but I also felt the tightening in my chest loosened.
I waited for my mother to blame me, but instead she glanced my way, smiling proudly. “That’s all I have time for today. My daughter and I are going to the e on, love.”
“But Veronica, you will return next week, right ”
“No!” said my mother, “No! No! No!”

Though plastic shopping bags are cheap and useful, they cause widespread pollution. Now, we may have an unlikely helper to help clean up our garbage — a small wax worm.
The worm’s hidden skills were discovered by accident. About two years ago, Federica Bertocchini, a developmental biologist at the Spanish National Research Council and an amateur beekeeper, was cleaning out bees’ nest that had been filled with worms. She removed the worms and put them in a plastic bag while doing the cleaning. After finishing, she went back to the room where she had left the worms, and found they had escaped from the bag. When she checked, she saw that the bag was full of holes.
Realizing she may have made an important discovery, Bertocchini teamed up with other researchers to conduct further research. They began by placing 100 worms on some plastic bags and discovered that over a 24-hour period, the worms managed to chew through 92 milligrams of plastic. The researchers make an appropriate judgment that at this rate, the group of worms could degrade(降解) an average-sized 5.5-gram plastic bag within a month. To rule out the possibility that chewing was causing the degradation, the researchers spread the soft wet substance inside the body of some recently dead worms on a sheet of plastic. Sure enough, even the liquid was able to eat through the material, confirming that the worms have plastic-digesting enzymes(酶).
While the news is certainly encouraging, not everyone is convinced. The Michigan State University’s Ramani Narayan believes the tiny pieces of microplastics released by the plastic-eating worms would pick up harmful substances and transport them up the food chain, causing, even more, harm to the environment and human health. Susan Selke, director of Michigan State University School of Packaging, is concerned that the worms will not be able to survive in an oxygen-free landfills where large amounts of waste material are buried under the earth.
However, Bertocchini is not planning to transport worm armies to landfills. Instead, the researcher wants to identify the enzyme that helps degrade the plastic. The researcher says, maybe we can find the molecule (分子) and produce it on an industrial level, rather than using a million worms in a plastic bag.
28.What did the experiment of using dead worms find out
A.Worms’ chewing may cause the degradation.
B.A plastic-eating chemical exists in wax worms.
C.Dead worms are effective in dealing with plastic.
D.It takes a long time for worms to degrade plastic.
29.What is Ramani Naravan’s attitude to Bertocchini’s finding
A.Objective. B.Convinced. C.Questioning. D.Optimistic.
30.What might Bertocchini focus her later research on
A.The structure of plastic-degrading enzymes.
B.The use of other worms in disposing plastic.
C.Wax worms’ adaptability to the landfill environment.
D.The chance of producing wax worms on a large scale.
31.What is the best title for the text
A.Can Wax Worms Save the Environment
B.Wax Worms Have an Appetite for Plastic
C.Why Do Wax Worms Have Plastic-eating Skills
D.Hungry Worms Join the Fight Against Plastic Pollution

Social media is taking over our lives: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and now, TikTok. These social media platforms have changed from a way to stay connected to an industry where even kids can make money off their posts. While this may seem like another opportunistic innovation, it’s really full of hidden false realities.
The median income(中位收入) recorded in the United States of America was about $63,000 in 2018. TikTokers can make anywhere from $50,000 to $150,000 fora TikTok brand partnership, and TikTokers with over a million followers can make up to $30,000 a month—$360,000 a year. They are making more than the average person trying to feed their family and keep a roof over their heads simply by postinga 15-second video.
This is mad in more ways than one. Not only is it an overpaid “job”, it promotes undeserved admiration from viewers and a false sense of reality. Many of these famous TikTokers are still teens and the effects of fame at such an early stage in life might cause issues later in life, such as mental illness. Teens between the ages of 13 and 17 make up 27% of TikTok viewers, who can be easily influenced by what they are watching. They can put a false sense of self-value into who they look up to and what they represent: money, fame, being considered conventionally attractive.
While TikTok has become a great tool for marketing, it’s important to understand how this content affects young viewers. If we’re constantly consuming content that shows us all we need to do to be successful is be conventionally attractive and post a 15-second video featuring a new dance, it will challenge our knowledge of what really makes someone successful and will in turn affect our individual work ethnics (伦理). What about the people who miss birthdays and family holidays due to their jobs and aren’t getting paid nearly as much as these TikTokers
Richard Colyer, president and creator of Metaphor, Inc, had his own view on this issue. “It sounds great that kids can make money for doing the latest dance moves in a 15-second video, but we should feed the minds of kids and not just their bank accounts. TikTok can be great if used properly. Money alone is not good; technology alone is not good and connectedness can be bad if it is only online.”
Again, as a fellow consumer of TikTok, I do enjoy the app when I have some time to kill and need a good laugh. I’m not against someone making a living on entertainment, but what does getting famous by posting a 15-second video teach young people
32.What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 1 refer to
A.Social networking. B.A job offered by TikTok.
C.Making money on social media. D.Staying connected to the Internet.
33.What does the author try to indicate in Paragraph 2
A.TikTokers can hardly make ends meet.
B.Social media platforms like TikTok can make people overpaid.
C.Teens are wise to make a huge amount of money from TikTok.
D.TikTokers earn such a high income that they can support their family.
34.Which is the possible influence of TikTok on its young users
A.They are likely to develop false values. B.They tend to live an adult life too soon.
C.They are forced to pay for certain services. D.They may stop believing other social media.
35.What did Richard Colyer stress according to his view
A.Contents of videos need checking before their release online.
B.We have a responsibility to supply teens with food for thought.
C.Young TikTokers should be banned from opening bank accounts.
D.Money and technology can be good if used properly by TikTokers.

Everybody gets angry, but out-of-control anger isn’t good for you or those around you. So here are five simple strategies to help you learn how to manage your anger:
Relax. Breathe deeply from your stomach. 36 Repeat it to yourself and visualize a relaxing time and experience.
Change the way you think. When you’re angry, your thinking can get exaggerated(夸大的). 37 For instance, instead of telling yourself, “Oh, it’s terrible! Everything’s ruined,” tell yourself, “It’s understandable that I’m upset about it, but it’s not the end of the world.”
38 Statements like “This never works.” or “You’re always forgetting things.” will make you feel your anger is justified(情有可原的) and there’s no way to solve the problem. They might upset people who might be willing to work with you to find a solution.
Have better communication. Angry people tend to jump to conclusions. If you are in a heated discussion, slow down. 39 And take your time before answering. Instead of saying the first thing that comes into your head, think carefully about what you want to say.
Use humor. Psychologists say that highly angry people tend to think “things ought to go my way!” Sometimes “silly humor” can help you get a more balanced perspective. So, when you feel that anger comes the next time, picture yourself as a king or queen, walking around, admired by everybody, and getting your own way in every situation. The more detail you can get into your imaginary scenes, the more likely it is to put a smile on your face. 40
A.Be careful with words like “never” or “always”.
B.Listen carefully to what the other person is saying.
C.Try replacing these thoughts with more reasonable ones.
D.Avoid using these strategies when you’re in a tense situation.
E.Then slowly repeat a calm word or phrase such as “take it easy”.
F.Try changing the topics so your talks won’t turn into arguments.
G.That will help you realize that the things you’re angry about are really not very important.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I yawned (打哈欠) as I got off the last step of the bus. I had woken early that morning, and had not been able to sleep on the long ride from Riverside High, thinking about that day’s race, the Eye Opener. I had never raced in a state-wide race before. Over thirty high school teams ran, along with quite a few colleges. The rest of my team and I unloaded the bus, and we relaxed and waited for our race patiently. “Start warming up,” our coach told us, roughly forty-five minutes after we arrived. After finishing our stretches, we headed over to the starting line. eager for the race to begin.
The starter walked to the middle of the field. “There will be two commands.” his voice boomed, “Runners set, then the gun. If you hear another shot, return to the starting line to start again.” My heart raced as I got my legs ready to race.
“Runners set!” the starter shouted Bam! The gun fired, and he rushed out of our way. Adrenaline(肾上腺素) rushed through my body as I raced through the mass of runners. As I rounded the first turn, my schoolmates greeted me with heartening shouts. Then, in what felt like only one minute, I arrived at the one mile mark.
“6’10”, a man declared as I ran by. I tried to ignore him, but my legs began to bum as I realized I had run a mile and still had two to go. I slowed down my pace, for I knew the second mile was the worst of all three. Minutes later, I felt horrible. My legs ached, feeling like lead blocks. My vision was clouded as sweat dropped down into my eyes, and my arms felt as if they would fall off if I swung them one more time. Just as I almost reached my limit, a boy passed me. He also seemed to have lost strength but soon he was a little ahead of me.
