On a cold morning in May, I received a fascinating email from a high school friend, inviting me to a 10-day all-female surfing adventure in Portugal. The offer was irresistible, and I instantly knew my answer was yes.
The trip seemed simple enough. Ten women, ranging from 30 to 45 years old, all strangers, will gather on the Portuguese coast to embrace the challenge of surfing the Atlantic waves.
As a travel enthusiast, I quickly sought permission from my boss for this once-in-a-lifetime journey.
Through my 33 years, I’ve observed a common adult tendency: we often limit ourselves to refinding skills we already possess. There’s a certain pride in improving our expertise, becoming increasingly knowledgeable in our chosen fields, yet unintentionally, this focus often leaves other skills undeveloped and leads to neglecting other areas of potential growth.
Two days later, I arrived in Ericeira, a charming surf town, where I met my surfing group. Despite our different personalities and backgrounds, we were all united in a persistent desire to challenge ourselves, learn, tackle and grow.
The shores at Ericeira, where the beginners learn to surf, are shallow and covered with slippery rocks. They make for softer waves but are difficult to navigate (驾驭).
Guided by our amazing coaches, together, we faced the waves. Sometimes, it poured with rain, and the waves crashed around us, but we were still out there. And with every slip and fall, words of encouragement filled the air.
Honestly, I probably spent most of my days frozen to the bone, but that didn’t matter because a new level of genuine joy and personal achievement had been unlocked.
Learning a new skill taught me the humbleness that can come from doing badly at something new, and the pride that develops when you finally manage to grasp something you’ve been working on.
While surfing might not be my calling, trying it out inspired me to take more risks in life, to step outside of my comfort zone and to never stop believing in myself. You never know what you’re capable of if you don’t go out there and try.
56. What motivated the author to join the surf trip to Portugal
A. The opportunity to improve existing skills.
B. The need to reconnect with a high school friend.
C. The chance to undertake work duties in Portugal.
D. The desire to embrace a challenge and learn a new skill.
57. What is the author’s view on adults focusing on mastering one field
A. It narrows one’s abilities. B. It is essential for career success.
C. It disrupts one’s work-life balance. D. It develops creativity and exploration.
58. Which of the following words best describe the author’s surfing experience
A. Tough but rewarding. B. Boring and uneventful.
C. Difficult and frustrating. D. Relaxing but unpredictable.
59. What can be inferred about the author
A. She used to lack confidence in herself. B. She became more willing to take risks.
C. She went on to become an expert surfer. D. She discovered the surfing was her true calling.
60. What wisdom did the author gain from the experience with surfing
A. The value of pushing your limits and trying new things.
B. The need to seek professional training in all new skills.
C. The benefit of traveling with unknown companions.
D. The importance of being an expert in one field.

The Internet has completely changed the workplace over the past three decades. Artificial Intelligence is now all set to do the same, and businesses that don’t take advantage of the technology risk being left behind.
Global tech giants like Amazon have been leading the change, and businesses of all sizes are now using the technology for employing and managing their staff.
Among them is L’Oreal. With about a million applicants for roughly 15,000 new positions each year, the company is using AI to hire.
“We really wanted to save time and focus more on quality, diversity and candidate experience. And AI solutions were the best way to go faster on these challenges,” said Eva Azoulay, global vice-president of L’Oreal’s Human Resources Department.
The company uses Mya, a chatbot, to save employers’ time during the first stage of the process. It handles routine questions from candidates, and checks details such as availability and visa requirements. If candidates make it to the next round, they’ll run into Seedlink, an AI software that scores applicants based on their answers to open-ended interview questions. These scores don’t replace human judgment, said Azoulay, but they do exclude candidates who might not seem like obvious choices.
Early results have been promising. For one internship program, where 12,000 people apply for about 80 spots, employers claim they saved 200 hours of time while hiring the most diverse group to date.
Other businesses have gone beyond employment and are using AI to help manage employees. Some UK firms have started using Isaak, a system designed by the London-based company Status Today, to track how many hours staff spend online and the number of emails they receive. London real estate agent J Brown has been using this system since March. CEO James Brown said it helps the firm understand employees’ habits and prevent them from overworking. “It enables us to solve bottleneck problems and relieve overburdened employees,” he said.
Despite these examples of good practice, there is still a long way for AI to reach its full potential, and the technology comes with risks. Another AI danger could be its impact on jobs through automation.
McKinsey predicts AI could add $13 trillion to the global economy by 2030, with early adopters doubling their cash flow over that period. But the demand for repetitive or digitally-unskilled jobs could drop by around 10%, the consulting firm said in a 2018 report.
61. What can we learn about AI technology from Paragraph 1
A. It causes a great problem in workplace. B. It will become a necessary part of business.
C. It requires businesses to invest much money. D. It will replace the Internet in the future.
62. L’Oreal uses AI in its hiring process to ______.
A. pick out the most suitable candidates directly B. come up with more questions unlimitedly
C. improve the company’s hiring efficiency D. save money by replacing human judgment
63. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “exclude” in the 5th paragraph
A. Prepare. B. Consider. C. Remove. D. Include.
64. Firms with the system Isaak can ______.
A. prevent their employees from surfing the Internet
B. force their employees to form good working habits
C. monitor the contents of all their employees’ emails
D. help their employees avoid being overstressed at work
65. What is the main idea of the passage
A. What AI will bring to the workplace. B. Why AI could be good for the workplace.
C. How businesses can prepare for an AI future. D. How to use AI to improve workplace efficiency.
D
Ask any readers who their favorite fictional character in a novel is and you’ll likely get a detailed explanation about the beloved character that they admire. It might even sound like they’re talking about a person they know.
In a study, researchers looked at the brains of a group of people over nine days. Half of the group read the novel Pompeii, and half didn’t. After examining, researchers found the readers’ brains showed heightened connectivity in some areas. This is likely because the brain imagines the movement and emotions of the character they read about in the book. Even though the participants were then asked not to read the novel, they kept this heightened connectivity. We call that a “shadow activity”, almost like a muscle memory. So even after you’ve finished a book, your brain keeps those benefits for some time afterwards.
It has been suggested that people who read a lot of fiction become more empathic (being able to understand another person’s feelings), because fiction is a simulation (模仿) of social experiences, in which people practice and improve their interpersonal skills. The people who not only read fiction, but felt a high level of “emotion transportation” while reading as compared to people who weren’t taken by the story or who read non-fiction, displayed higher levels of empathy when tested. Increase of empathy is important for people because empathy is positively related to creativity, performance at work and cooperative behaviors.
Besides, reading improves “Theory of Mind”. It is “the ability to understand that others have mental states that are different from one’s own.” Of various activities, reading novels has been found to improve this ability, while watching television programs or movies has been found to do just the opposite — a reduced understanding of others and weaker cognitive (认知的) development overall.
Maybe we should put more of a priority on novel-reading. And many readers believe that reading a novel is far better and more meaningful than watching any movie. As David Kidd of the New School study said, “Fiction is not just a simulator of a social experience; it is a social experience.”
66. Which of the statements is true according to Paragraph 2
A. When they finish a book, the brain connectivity disappears.
B. The participants in the study all read the novel Pompeii.
C. Reading novels increases connectivity in our brain.
D. Reading novels helps enhance our memory greatly.
67. What do we know about novel readers from Paragraph 3
A. They tend to be emotional in social experiences.
B. They are more likely to be innovative and cooperative.
C. They have poor interpersonal skills.
D. They are more sensitive to others’ views.
68. What’s the effect of watching TV or movies
A. It distinguishes your views from those of others.
B. It contributes to your cognitive development.
C. It reduces your empathy for others a lot.
D. It changes your overall mental states.
69. What does the underlined word “priority” in the last paragraph mean
A. Preference. B. Authority. C. Exposure. D. Evaluation.
70. What do you think is the best title for the passage
A. Reading fiction VS Watching movie B. Reading fiction makes a full man
C. Novel-reading is a “shadow activity” D. Novel-readers share emotions
第二卷(共两部分;满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题,每题2分,满分10分)
When I think of the hardest moments of my life, ironically many have turned out to be blessings. The most severe one was being nearly kicked out of my PhD program at the University of Georgia in 2016.
The program in Georgia turned out not to be the right fit for me despite my best efforts. The whole year was riddled with exhaustion, insecurity, fear, and exclusion. I was in therapy myself for most of the year to cope, and the only thing that made it tolerable was a lot of support from my family and friends.
I was utterly devastated when I went back home; it felt like my career was over. Fast forward to today, however, and I can see that getting driven out of the Georgia program was one of the best things that ever happened to me. In 2017, when I transferred to a doctoral program in San Diego, I began to thrive and now my business is doing exceptionally well. I am deeply grateful I studied in San Diego and happy that I didn’t stay in Georgia. It was great that I was driven out! As the saying goes, “What seems like good or bad news now can turn out to be the opposite in the future.”
Ironically, the research and writing training from the University of Georgia significantly helped me develop my academic, professional, and personal writing, for which I had gratitude to Georgia. I worked hard in Georgia and it paid off: The learning and growth I experienced were incomparable.
As my personal example demonstrates, life is a total roller coaster. Every now and then you are able to discover a new high, a ceiling-breaking moment, whereas in other moments you may feel like you’re falling deeper and deeper into hell. While these experiences can be incredibly tough, they present us with valuable opportunities to trust life and cultivate personal growth and learning.
71. What was the author’s most severe moment of his life (No more than 8 words)
72. What’s the meaning of the underlined phrase in paragraph 2 (No more than 3 words)
73. What message does the author want to convey with his personal experience in the 3rd paragraph (No more than 15 words)
74. Why did the author thank the University of Georgia (No more than 10 words)
75. What will you do if you are in a dark moment Please explain. (No more than 20 words)
