For many people, the idea of moving to France usually connects with dreams of romance or the land of Michelin stars and cafe culture-food. US woman Jane Satow found both. Not only that, but she has also found work teaching locals how to cook in France.
Satow 56, left her home two decades ago to start a new life in southern French region. Coming from a family of farmers with a passion for the kitchen, she had a background in catering (承办酒席) before making the move, and her love of food fueled her ambition of one day moving to the French region known for its special menus. “My first jobs were in restaurants and I finally worked for several fine dining restaurants, which inspired my passion for fine food, wine and cooking,” she tells CNN.
Satow attended a cooking school in Colorado, where she completed a course in French techniques and joined a “weekly wine club.” Eventually, Satow met her handsome French partner, Christophe Daumas, in 2019 at a salsa dance class and says he really “swept her off her feet” like in a fairytale. She credits Daumas with helping her pursue a long-held desire to share her knowledge of food with others. With the support and encouragement of Daumas, she started looking for a place to buy to create a dedicated space where she could offer cooking classes. But in 2019 it had to press pause on repairs and opening the school during the pandemic. Though disappointed, she used the time to develop fresh recipes and test old ones in her new kitchen.
Her business, La Cuisine Provencal, finally started in 2021. She says she now has customers from all over the world, mostly travelers coming to Provence for the first time, but also locals.
After struggling with the language, she says she now speaks fluent French. “I truly love my adopted country and even at the risk of remaining on my own, I am absolutely sure about staying put in France,” she adds.
24. What inspired Jane Satow to move to France two decades ago
A. She was attracted by French romance B. She was passionate about French food.
C. She desired to teach locals how to cook D. She longed to learn the local cafe culture.
25. What do the underlined words “swept her off her feet” mean in Paragraph 3
A. Won her heart. B. Held her up. C. Helped her stand. D. Made her surprised.
26. Which of the following words can best describe Satow
A. Selfless and enthusiastic. B. Devoted and warm-hearted.
C. Helpful and thoughtful D. Determined and hard-working.
27. What is Satow’s attitude toward her future life in France
A. Confused. B. Indifferent. C. Curious. D. Hopeful.

Exercise doesn’t just help you lose fat. It could also promote healthier fat, according to a new study. “Living a physically active lifestyle makes our fat tissue (组织) a more accommodating place for extra energy under conditions when we do gain weight,” said senior study author Dr. Jeffrey Horowitz, professor of movement studies at the University of Michigan.
To see how exercise impacts fat tissue, researchers compared fat tissue just under the skin from two groups of 16 people with obesity: those who reported exercising at least four times a week for at least 2 years, and those who did not exercise regularly. Those who had a history of regular exercise had fat cells which showed characteristics that increase how much fat they can store. It is important that the fat tissue under the skin has a greater capacity (容量) so that if a person does gain weight, the increasing fat can go there instead of more dangerous places, such as the heart or liver, Dr. Jeffrey added. “Unfortunately, most of us, even regular exercisers, gain weight as we get older. If we have a greater capacity to store that in our fat tissue, less of it will go to our liver, our heart, or other places that in excess (过量) can be really problematic.”
This study shows that researchers need to learn more about fat tissue and how it is connected to health and lifestyle changes, said Dr. Andrew Freeman, director of cardiovascular prevention and wellness at National Jewish Health in Denver. “Just being overweight may not be the whole story,” he said. “The tissue used to be understood as only functioning to store energy, but researchers are just starting to learn it has many functions,” Freeman said. “It makes sense to have some degree of fat so you have some reserve, but not to the point that the typical American has,” he added
The key finding of the study is that healthier fat storage is just another good reason to live a physically active life. If you want to start, Freeman suggests trying out exercise first thing in the morning.
28. Why did the researchers conduct the study according to the passage
A. To observe how fat issue impacts physical health.
B. To examine the influence of exercise on fat tissue.
C. To understand whether exercise can help us lose weight.
D. To analyse the relationship between fat issue and exercise.
29. What can we learn about the study
A. Regular exercise can help people store less fat and become fit.
B. Regular exercisers are more likely to gain weight as they get old.
C. Regular exercise causes increasing fat to go to places like heart or liver.
D. Regular exercisers have a greater capacity to store fat in their fat issues
30. What may Dr. Andrew Freeman agree with according to the passage
A. A certain amount of fat is harmful to health.
B. Further study is needed on the role of fat tissue
C. Weight control is the key to living a healthy lifestyle.
D. Fat tissue has long been believed to perform more functions
31. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. Weight loss: promote a healthy life B. Fat tissue: consume extra energy.
C. Exercise: help you store fat better D. Health risks: lead to overweight
D
The internet provides access to a large amount of information. However, you might notice that the same ideas or views frequently reappear on certain social media platforms. If this happens, be cautious. You may be in what’s called an information cocoon (信息茧房) -a space where only similar opinions spread.
This phenomenon, which has existed since the early eras of human culture, has been significantly enlarged by the widespread use of social media. Imagine ancient people gathered around a bonfire, sharing only stories and experiences that reinforced their collective worldview. Today, the internet serves as the modern “bonfire”, with social media platforms connecting people globally and enabling the sharing of thoughts and beliefs.
You might have noticed that social media advertising seems to “magically” understand your interests, presenting ads that are surprisingly related. This is the result of complex algorithms (算法) -sets of instructions designed to perform tasks or solve problems. Every time we click, like, or share something, we leave a digital footprint that helps algorithms better understand our interests, values and beliefs. Algorithms then use this information to provide content that meets our interests.
Although information cocoons can provide a sense of belonging, they also bring some negative effects. Engaging with others only within limited information space results in one-sided individual’s viewpoint, making it hard for them to accept different views and discuss complex issues. Information cocoons can also contribute to increasing division and anxiety, which further divides societies. They make it unclear between facts and opinions. This weakness leaves us open to misinformation, influencing both personal decisions and social energy.
Fortunately, there are many ways to break out of the information cocoon. Actively seeking diverse information sources is very important for overcoming these limitations. This can involve diversifying (使多样化) our social media content, reading articles from various views, and joining meaningful discussions with people from different backgrounds. Besides, training critical thinking skills is essential. We should check facts and remain open to changing our beliefs.
32. The information cocoon is increasingly becoming large because ________.
A. A great deal of information is provided.
B. A growing number of people turn to social media.
C. Various similar opinions spread in the information cocoon.
D. Stories and experiences are usually shared in people’s gatherings
33. Why does the author mention “algorithms” in Paragraph 3
A. To analyze how social media impacts our preferences.
B. To indicate how algorithms perform tasks or problems.
C. To explain why we always read satisfying content on social media platforms.
D. To show why algorithms are important in affecting our decisions and beliefs.
34. Which of the following is the negative effect of information cocoons
A. A person sticking to his own opinion. B. A society filled with energy.
C. A person willing to join in discussions. D. A society full of various views.
35. What does the author advise us to do to get away from the information cocoon
A. Voice our own views openly. B. Develop critical thinking ability.
C. Communicate with like-minded people. D. Search specific information sources.

M: Go down Fifth Street to National Park. Turn right at the park and go straight on for two blocks. Then
you’ll see the museum. It’s between a bank and a bookstore. You won’t miss it.
W: Thanks a lot.

W: But this book was lent to Justin a month ago. He didn’t return it until just now. So the bill probably belongs to him.

W: Did you sign up for that gym my sister recommended
M: Yes, I did. And I also met my personal coach, Ms. Robbins
W: Good. My sister said that gym would make different exercise plans for different people
M: Yes. ⑧Ms. Robbins told me to stick to a low-fat diet and prepare a sport suit. I decided to buy one after we get off work
W: Why not buy one online I know a good online shop
M: Really Why don’t we have a look now
W: Let me see. How about this blue one
M: I don’t like blue. ⑩That gray one looks pretty good!
W: But it says gray ones are sold out. They only have black ones in the same style.
M: ⑨Then I’d rather buy a gray one in the shopping mall near our company.

W: Good morning. What can I help you with, sir
M: Good morning. I’d like to rent a one-bedroom apartment with a balcony. Do you have any available
W: Sure. Do you have any other requirements
M: Yes. It must be furnished. I am still in college, so I don’t want to spend too much money on furniture. In addition, I prefer to live on a high floor, which is quiet and good for my reading.
W: Oh, I’m sorry. There’re only two-bedroom apartments available on a high floor. I have to tell you that the one-bedroom doesn’t have a dishwasher. But all of our two-bedroom apartments do. What do you think
M: OK. Can I see an apartment in the afternoon
W: Sure. But I’ll meet a customer at 1:00 p. m. and I’m not sure when it will end.
M: I’ll give you my phone number, so you can contact me when you’re free.
W: No problem.

M: How many days off do you have every week
W: One day, that is every Sunday.
M: What do you usually do on your day off
W: Oh, I get up at 5:00 a. m., 2 hours earlier than usual. Then I run for an hour, do yoga and dance
for half an hour each. My mother prepares breakfast for me at 7:30 a. m. After breakfast, I watch my favorite movies at home
M: I see. What do you usually do on Sunday afternoon
W: I usually go to my uncle’s farm. But I won’t go there this Sunday afternoon. My books are due soon, so I have to return them. I don’t want to pay a fine.
M: I really envy your life. On weekends, I usually take my children to the amusement park or the zoo, or just play games with them at home. I have no time to relax.
W: Oh, going to the zoo is a bit boring for me

M: Here I am, at City Center Square, watching my grandmother dancing. In fact, her team just came first in the final contest at Guangming Theater this Friday. My family felt so proud that we held a congratulation party for her.
My grandmother taught music at a high school. She has always been into dancing and singing. After her retirement, she goes square dancing every night with her friends. Their dance has a strong rhythm and a wide range of movements, making it different from the slow traditional Chinese square dancing.
She also goes to a dance class for seniors every week at Heilongjiang University. She often expresses that dancing is the happiest part of her day, which not only keeps her fit, but most importantly, brings her many like-minded friends.
Qu Wenyong, a researcher who has been following the elderly care industry for many years, says in his study report that instead of just looking after grandchildren, increasing numbers of elderly Chinese are enjoying their own lives.
Do you want to see how well my grandmother can dance Follow my account and I’ll share the video I’m recording with you tonight. I’m sure you’ll be surprised.
