After finishing the last lesson, my husband didn’t leave as usual. Instead, he took off his
tennis shoes. Rather than putting them in his sports bag after changing into his sandals, my
husband offered the shoes to his instructor warmly. The instructor became very emotional as he
thanked my husband and accepted the shoes with a sweet smile. After our trip to Cuba, we
became more conscious of donating our gently used clothing and shoes to organizations that
donated these items to people in need.
Hearing our experiences, the woman sat in silence until her appointment. As she got up, she
turned toward me, saying with shame,“I’ve learned a lesson today. We should be thankful for
what we have and never take things for granted”. When the woman walked by the receptionist, I
was delighted to hear she told the receptionist she would return later in the afternoon with a bag
of gently used shoes for the donation box. Then, it also dawned on me that respectfully speaking
up in the face of bad comments can actually work!
