It proved if lightening was really produced by electricity or something else.
Read the passage and find out what Franklin’s experiment aimed to prove.
General reading
Raise a question
Is Benjamin Franklin`s famous experiment with lightning a fiction or a fact
What `s the aim of the experiment
To prove that lightning was a form of electricity.
What about the experiment
Franklin raised a kite with a piece of string tied to it. A metal key was attached to the string. A flash of lightning hit the kite, and electricity was conducted through the string to the key. Franklin then touched the key with his finger and got an electric shock.
Specific reading
Contributions:
1 For many year, more than one generation of schoolchildren has been amazed by Franklin`s bravery and his scientific approach to looking for the truth.
2 Franklin ,along with many other scientists , has inspired us and taught us that scientific experiments are important in order to establish the truth and to contribute towards later scientific discoveries and inventions.
Neither the story nor the details of the experiment are entirely true.
Analyse the question
Although it has been proved that Franklin`s experiment took place, the detail about the string and the key is true, scientists all agree that if Franklin had actually touched the key, he would certainly have died from the electric shock.
Because they want to establish the fact.
Why do scientists often question accepted ideas
More than one account suggests that while Newton was certainly inspired by a falling apple, there is no proof that it hit him on the head.
The solution
Admittedly, fiction is often more interesting than the truth, in science, facts should be proved by experiments and research , and we should not always believe everything we read or hear.
From the passage we can learn...
Some parts of the stories are true, and some are not, because they don’t follow the common sense. However, the scientists’ spirit of scientific exploration is what mostly matters.
1 Franklin did the experiment with lighting in order to ____________.
A have fun
B prove that lighting is a form of electricity
C fly a kite
D to prove that he was brave
2 What`s people`s attitude towards Franklin`s experiment
A Doubtful. B Believable. C Indifferent. D Negative.
3 Why do scientists often question accepted ideas
A Because they think they are cleverer than others.
B Because accepted ideas are often wrong.
C Because they only believe in themselves.
D Because they want to establish the facts.
Specific reading
Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer.
4 According to the text, which statement is true
A Actually Franklin didn`t touch the key at all.
B Franklin died from the experiment.

D Tell us lighting is really produced by electricity.
