Have you ever found yourself in a public space, wondering what passing strangers are doing with their day Perhaps you’ve made up stories for them in your head, as you imagine the rich and complex (复杂的) lives they’re living. I admit that this is something I do often. Part of it is likely due to my hobby of writing fiction, but I think we all have an inborn curiosity about others’ stories.
Recently I discovered a word that has been used to describe this feeling: sonder. Defined as: “Sonder (noun). The realization that each random passer-by is living a life as vivid and complex as your own.”
Now, you won’t find this definition in a standard dictionary. Instead, you’ll find it in the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, penned by Minnesota author John Koenig, who coined hundreds of words to express specific feelings we have no words for in English. Being able to put language to the way we feel can allow us to describe the indescribable.
Sonder gives us a word for a particular type of connection that can have a great impact on our well-being. If you’ve ever experienced anxiety or depression, for example, recognizing sonder could be helpful.
If your head is filled with worries, taking a moment to watch others go about their daily lives can offer a sense of perspective (视角). This may pull you out of your growing worries even if only for a brief moment. Similarly, if your mood is low and you’ re feeling lonely, being in a public space and spotting the sameness between you and passers-by can help you enjoy your life.
Sonder can also encourage compassion (同情心), and help you develop a sense of care. There are lots of studies on the benefits of compassion, from its positive impact on our mental health to how it improves physical health by getting rid of stress and loneliness.
In all, sonder serves as a reminder that even the briefest moments of connection hold power — a smile at a stranger, a coin given to a seller — and that we all have an important role to play. Whether you’re the lead or a background actor, this movie won’t be the same without you.
23. What’s the definition of sonder according to the text
A. The act of making up stories about strangers.
B. The feeling of being watched by strangers in public.
C. The experience of anxiety when observing others.
D. The realization that each person has a life like yours.
24. What is one possible result of recognizing sonder when in depression
A. It can increase feelings of loneliness. B. It can provide a new perspective on life.
C. It can lead to a reduction in care for others. D. It can cause physical health problems.
25. How does sonder influence a person’s behavior in public spaces
A. He becomes more self-centered. B. He avoids eye contact with others.
C. He is more focused on his own life. D. He acts more kindly to strangers.
26. Which would be the best title for the text
A. Language: A Tool Useful for Communication B. Sonder: A Word That Connects Us All
C. The Power of Connecting with Strangers D. The Impact of Public Spaces on Mental Health
D
How would you survive without your smartphone For many of us, it’s the device we’re most attracted to — looking at it hundreds of times a day. We depend on it to perform different tasks and to connect with our friends and family. But have we become addicted to our phones
Certainly, the inventor of the first mobile phone, American engineer Martin Cooper, thinks we might be. In a BBC interview, he suggested people should stop scrolling (刷屏) and “get a life”. But of course, once we start scrolling or watching videos, we just can’t kick the habit. Psychologist and author Jean Twenge says, “we’re all guilty of habitually checking our phones if waiting for a text or getting really into social media then kind of, looking up and realizing that an hour has passed.” There’s even a word — a phubber — to describe a person who ignores the real people around them because they are concentrating on their phones.
But does it matter if we make the most of this technology Possibly, because like a drug, the problem arises when it is taken away. A study from King’s College London found young people they studied couldn’t control the amount of time they spent on their phone. Such addictive behavior means that people become anxious or upset if they are refused constant access, which can cause anxiety and mental health issues.
Interestingly, another study by the London School of Economics and Political Science suggests we don’t just look at our phones because we are encouraged by a text or e-mail. The people they studied felt natural to interact with their phones, just as a smoker would light a cigarette. Prof. Saadi Lahlou, co-author of the study, told the BBC, “We must learn tricks to avoid the temptation (诱惑) when we want to concentrate or have good social relations.”
One solution could be an app that rewards students for time spent away from their phones. Another choice is changing your smartphone to an ordinary phone that has none of the distractions (分心事) on it. But mainly, perhaps, we just need to look up more and reconnect with the real world!
27. What did Martin Cooper suggest people do
A. Learn tricks to avoid the temptation. B. Enjoy life by stopping the habit of scrolling.
C. Change their smartphones to ordinary phones. D. Use an app that rewards them for less phone use.
28. Why do people feel ashamed after checking their phones
A. For not being productive enough. B. For missing important texts or calls.
C. For using their phones for a long time. D. For not being able to connect with others.
29. What does the study from King’s College London imply
A. The young shouldn’t use their phones. B. Using phones leads the young to be anxious.
C. Curing phone addiction is not an easy job. D. Young people can’t survive without phones.
30. What is the main message of the text
A. Smartphones are essential for modern life.
B. Smartphones have a certain impact on mental health.
C. The inventor of the mobile phone should be punished.
D. People should avoid their addiction to smart phones.

【答案】23. D 24. B 25. D 26. B

【答案】Dear fellow students,
I’m Li Hua, chairman of the Student Union. Last Saturday, our school organized a trip to the local nature park for cleaning. However, we noticed some tourists littering and scribbling everywhere, which is really disgraceful.
As students, we should take the lead in protecting the environment. Let’s start from ourselves and remind others to keep the environment clean. Don’t litter or scribble in public places. Let’s work together to create a beautiful and harmonious environment.
Let’s act now and make a difference!
