There was once a famous scientist who made several important discoveries. Once he was asked how he could be so creative. He replied that it all came from an experience he had with his mother when he was 2 years old. He was trying to take a bottle of milk out of the refrigerator. But the bottle was too slippery(滑的)and he dropped it. The kitchen floor was covered in milk.
Instead of shouting at him or punishing him, his mother said, “Robert, what a great and wonderful mess you have made! I have never seen such a huge puddle of milk. Would you like to play in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up ”
So he did. After a few minutes, they cleaned it up together. Then his mother said, “This was a failed experiment in how to carry a big bottle of milk with two tiny hands. Let’s fill the bottle with water and see if you can find a way to carry it without dropping it.”
The little boy learned that if he held the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it. What a wonderful lesson!

One of the simplest and the most effective forms of communication involves nothing more than the movement of facial muscles. What am I talking about Smiling! Everyone understands what a smile means, and everyone also understands what a frown means. In fact, these two basic facial expressions can be recognized across countries, across the world and across the globe, regardless of the language spoken or the culture lived in.
Hugs are so beautiful! When you give someone a hug or someone comes up and gives you a hug, this simple act of a hug can“speak" volumes about how much you care for the other person, how much love you want to share with the other person and how much you have missed the other person. This hug has so much to say, and yet there never has any word to be spoken.
And, when one needs to say “yes” or “no”, a movement of the head can say the same thing instead. These basic examples show just how powerful body language can be. Just knowing how to read and use body language effectively makes it really easy to see why it is not always a bad thing to be lost for words.
Body language in the world of love is a very common thing and sometimes the only thing. And, most of the time, body language is the very first words “spoken” before any words are. The old saying is “love at first sight”, not “love at first word” . Across a crowded room their eyes meet and linger, he winks at her, and she raises an eyebrow. The connection is made without any words needed. These displays of body language say it all. In fact, sometimes they can say more than words can.
8. How many kinds of body language are mentioned in the first two paragraphs
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
9. Why does the author think it isn’t a bad thing to be lost for words
A. Silence is usually better than words.
B. Body language can save much time.
C. Body language can be more effective.
D. Too many words may bring some trouble.
10. Which word can best describe body language according to the the passage
A. Necessary. B. Important.
C. Wonderful. D. Powerful
11. What can we learn from the passage
A. Many words are contained in a hug.
B. Smiling means different things in different countries.
C. Words are not necessary in the world of romance.
D. “Yes” and “no” can’t be replaced by body language
D
Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once said, “The British are the only people who like to be told how bad things are.” This is definitely (绝对地) true of British comedy. Most people think humor is about happy things, but for the British, the opposite is true. We love to use our cruel sense of humor to complain and be negative (消极).
British comedy, for example, draws a fine line between comedy and tragedy (悲剧). BBC’s The Office is a TV show, famous for its dry humor. The main character, David Brent, is a foolish man, and the show’s comedy comes from his delusions. For example, he often tells himself that he is loved by everyone but the viewer can see that everyone hates him.
Stupid characters for the audience to laugh at are an old tradition in Britain. In Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night, the character Malvolio is an old man whom people play tricks on. The audience will laugh away, although the reality is that this man is a truly tragic individual (个体).
This side of British humor is reflected (反映) in friendships as well. At university, my friends and I would always laugh at one another. I had an American friend who actually found this sarcasm (挖苦) quite upsetting. She didn’t realize that in Britain, the better friends you are with someone, the more you laugh at them.
This approach – laughing at everything – may sound rather depressing (让人郁闷的), but our strange humor played a big part in British history. In World War II, along with a stiff upper lip (坚定沉着), the British got through it by laughing. What else was there to do
There is a saying in English: “Laugh and the world laughs with you; cry and you cry alone.” If you are ever on the receiving end of British sarcasm, you may feel like crying, but it’s best to just laugh it off!
12. How is British comedy different from other types
A. It is often surprising and boring.
B. It often laughs at human nature.
C. It is often about negative things.
D. It often makes people feel depressed.
13. What does the underlined word “delusions” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. strong abilities
B. fun characters
C incorrect beliefs
D. deep confidence
14. Why is Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night mentioned in the article
A. To show one of the best examples of British comedy.
B. To explain how Shakespeare’s comedy is different.
C. To show how difficult it is to make people accept British comedy.
D. To prove Britain has a long tradition of laughing at stupid characters.
15. How does the author advise people to react to British humor
A. Learn from it.
B. Don’t take it seriously.
C. Reply sarcastically.

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem, my inability to read.
In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room”. I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle. I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle.
There on the book’s cover was a beagle which looked identical to my dog. I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story, my mind continued to the final scene of reunion, on and on, until my own lost dog and I were, in my mind, running together.
Paragraph 1:
My mother's call returned, me to the real world. I suddenly realized something.
Paragraph 2:
And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, and was awarded a PhD in literature.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
My mother's call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something. The trick of reading is to put yourself into the story experiencing what the author goes through and appreciating its meaning in your heart. As long as I clung to this process, not only was my inability to read defeated, but also an inner aspiration to read was stimulated, which changed my life for the better. During the summer, I incredibly developed special companionship with books, ranging from vivid storybooks to academic articles. My mother was more than delighted to see my change.
Paragraph 2:
And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, and was awarded a PhD in literature. She proposed that my experience should be of use to others. So I set up a team to provide those who had difficulty reading with space to turn to, through which I myself also gained a better understanding of reading as well as my life. My first adventure of reading turned out to be a permanent treasure.
