Most of us take the task of buying a cup of coffee for granted, as it seems simple enough. However, we have no idea just how stressful tasks like this can be for people who suffer from disabilities. That’s why it’s so heart-warming to see a story like this in which a barista (咖啡师) does something small to make life a little easier for someone who is deaf.
Ibby Piracha lost his hearing when he was only two years old, and he now goes to his local cafe in Leesburg, Virginia to order a cup of coffee at least three times a week. Though all the baristas who work there have his order memorized, Ibby always write his order on his phone and shows it to the barista.
One day, however, one of the baristas did something that changed everything! After Ibby ordered his coffee, he was amazed when barista Krystal pane handed him a note in response. “I’ve been learning sign language just so you can have the same experience as everyone else,” the note read. Krystal then asked Ibby in sign language what he would like to order.
Ibby was touched that she would learn sign language just to help him feel welcome. “I was just so moved that she actually wanted to learn sign language. It is really a totally different language and it was something that she wanted to do because of me. Because I was a deaf customer. I was very, very impressed,” Ibby said.
Krystal had spent hours watching teaching videos so that she could learn enough sign language to give Ibby the best customer service that she could! “My job is to make sure people have the experience they expect and that’s what I gave him,” Krystal says.
Ibby posted a photo of Krystal’s note online, and it quickly went viral, getting hundreds of likes and comments that praised Krystal for her kind action.
4. What can we learn about Ibby Piracha from paragraph 2
A. He was born deaf. B. He lives a hard life.
C. He loves to order take-out food. D. He visits the cafe regularly.
5. Why did Krystal learn sign language

C. To give Ibby a big surprise. D. To make herself more popular.
6. Which of the following can best describe Krystal
A. Kind and considerate. B. Honest and responsible.
C. Sociable and humorous. D. Ambitious and sensitive.
7. What message does the author want to convey in the text
A. Two heads are better than one. B. A small act makes a difference.
C. One good turn deserves another. D. Actions speak louder than words.

According to the UN report, nearly 54 million tons of e-waste was generated around the world in 2019 and will reach 74.7 million tons by 2030. It includes everything from phones and computer monitors to larger items like refrigerators and old fax machine.
Rwanda is one of only 13 countries in Africa that have passed a national law regarding e-waste rule.· It has led to the first official recycling: and reusing facility in the country. Operational since early last year, this public-private partnership between the government and Enviroserve became a source of pride for Rwanda. The plant can process up to 10,000 tons of e-waste per year. According to managing director Olivier Mbera, Enviroserve has already repaired and reused more than 5,000 computers, which were sold to public schools. To date, it has processed more than 4,000 tons of e-waste and created more than 600 jobs.
Conveyor belts (传送带) sort plastics from metals, while particular space collects phosphor (磷) from old tube TVs. Circuit boards (电路板) pile up in bags and batteries are constantly being tested. Every piece of e-waste is thoroughly collected or pressed. The dangerous materials which can poison the environment are separated from the valuable ones.
“Globally, waste is not only increasing in quantity, but also in its complexity and composition,” says Okechukwu Daniel Ogbonnaya, country representative for Rwanda at the Global Green Growth Institute, an intergovernmental organization for sustainable economic growth. “Within an electronic device, there’s gold, silver and so on and these sorts of elements could be taken out, providing new business opportunities for small businesses and even for big cities to generate income. Rwanda is one of our earliest pioneer members and they’ve done really well when it comes to its shift to a green growth pathway,” he adds.
Mbera points to Enviroserve’s success in Rwanda as a potential beginning for an e-waste movement across Africa. “We’re talking with different governments in Africa to establish similar facilities in their countries,” he says. One thing is certain: it will take all nations to combat the growing e-waste crisis.
8. What can we know about e-waste recycling facility in Rwanda
A. It is the first plant to reuse e-waste in Africa.
B. It is managed entirely by the government.
C. It has already processed 10,000 tons of e-waste.
D. It manages e-waste in an eco-friendly way.
9. What can be inferred according to Okechukwu Daniel Ogbonnaya
A. Electronic devices are made of gold and silver.
B. E-waste can contain potential treasure.
C. Simple electronic devices are in great need.
D. Rwanda is the only nation to recycle e-waste.
10. Which word can replace the underlined word “combat” in Paragraph 5
A. Admit. B. Handle. C. Discover. D. Face.
11. What does the passage mainly talk about
A. Rwanda is coping with the rising e-waste crisis.
B. Lots of electronic devices are wasted in the world.
C. A great deal of e-waste is poisoning the environment.
D. E-waste is increasing in complexity and composition.

Although it has been revealed in recent years that plants are capable of seeing, hearing and smelling, they are still usually thought of as silent. But now, for the first time, they have been recorded making ultrasonic (超声的) cries when stressed, which researchers say could open up a new field of precision agriculture where farmers listen for water starved crops.
Itzhak Khait and his colleagues at Tel Aviv University in Israel found that tomato and tobacco plants made cries at frequencies humans cannot hear when stressed by a lack of water or when their stem it cut.
Microphones placed 10 centimetres from the plants picked up sounds in the ultrasonic range of 20 to 100 kilohertz, which the team says insects and some mammals would be capable of hearing and responding to from as far as 5 metres away, A moth may decide against laying eggs on a plant that sounds water-stressed, the researchers suggest. Plants could even hear that other plants are short of water and react accordingly, they speculate (推断).
On average, drought-stressed tomato plants made 35 sounds an hour, while tobacco plants made 11. When plant stems were cut, tomato plants made an average of 25 sounds in the following hour, and tobacco plants 15. Unstressed plants produced fewer than one sound per hour, on average.
It is even possible to distinguish between the sounds to know what the stress is. The researchers trained a machine-learning model to recognize between the plants’ sounds and the wind, rain and other noises of the greenhouse, correctly identifying in most cases whether the stress was caused by dryness or a cut, based on the sound’s intensity and frequency. Water-hungry tobacco appears to make louder sounds than cut tobacco, for example.
Enabling farmers to listen for water-stressed plants could “open a new direction in the field of precision agriculture”, the researchers suggest. They add that such an ability will be increasingly important as climate change exposes more areas to drought.
“The suggestion that the sounds that drought-stressed plants make could be used in precision agriculture seems feasible (可行的) if it is not too costly to set up the recording in a field situation,” says Anne Visscher at the royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in the UK.
She warns that the results can’t yet be broadened out to other stresses, such as salt or temperature, because these may not lead to sounds. In addition, there have been no experiments to show whether moths or any other animal can hear and respond to the sounds the plants make, so that idea remains based on guesses for now, she says.
12. The experiment by researchers, at Tel Aviv University shows that ______.
A. tomato plants cry more often than tobacco when hurt
B. plant sounds can be heard by plants quite far away
C. humans can hear water-hungry plants crying
D. moths like laying eggs on stressed plant
13. What is Anne Visscher’s attitude towards the finding of the experiment
A. Disapproving B. Cautious. C. Appreciative. D. Optimistic.
14. Taking advantage of the new research finding, farmers can ______.
A. predict the drought B. reduce greenhouse effects
C. diagnose plant condition faster D. detect and remove insects easily
15. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. Plants get stressed Just Like Us.
B. Sounds of Plants Detected Far Away.
C. Cries of plants break Farmers’ Hearts
D. Plants scream in the presence of stress

My ten-year-old self loved summertime. The best part of summer was the community pool. Everyone was there.
We didn’t have a care in the world. Our biggest concern was which one of us could hold her breath underwater the longest. We didn’t care what we looked like or who was cool. I never once thought about how I looked in a swimsuit or if my hair looked good. I was aware that I wasn’t super-thin like some of the other girls I saw, but I didn’t care.
And then one day, I was taking my turn on the diving board with all the other kids. I jumped in, floated freely to the top and swam over to the ladder to make my way out of the pool. I noticed a girl standing at the top of the ladder, so I swam slowly, giving her time to move. I didn’t know her. She looked cute and thin.
But instead of moving, a strange thing happened. This girl leaned over the pool and said to me, “They don’t allow beached (搁浅的) whales in this pool.”
Beached whales I soon realized that I was the beached whale. Suddenly, my cool blue swimsuit didn’t cover enough. I got out of the pool quickly and wrapped my towel around my body, feeling like I was going to throw up. From that moment on, I was aware of my size.
Clothes became a horrible dream, and I struggled through my teen years and into adulthood. I cried over clothes that didn’t fit. My heart had always hated the little girl by the pool, who took the confidence out of my life until I got my daughter, Lisa.
One day I dressed my little girl in beautiful clothes and put a bow (蝴蝶结) on her head, but she refused because she liked to be comfortable. Is society interested in comfort However, when I stared at her, I suddenly realized how beautiful she was, even though she was covered in mud.

According to the UN report nearly 54 million tons of e-waste was generated around the world in 2019 and will reach 74.7 million tons by 2030.

【答案】The Athlete I Admire Most
As we all know, a number of excellent athletes performed well in the Paris 2024 Olympics. The athletes I admire most is Quan Hongchan, the women’s 10m diving champion.
Born in an ordinary family, she trained so hard every day that she made a remarkable achievement. Quan received perfect 10s by all seven judges on her way to winning the gold medal. She had such astonishing dives, almost non-existent splashing! When watching her amazing performance, I couldn’t help applauding her, feeling over the moon. Young as she is, she deserves our respect.
Quan Hongchan’s achievements can be said to be the result of efforts. Just as the saying goes, “Practice makes perfect”. Quan sets a good example for us senior high school students. I’m determined to study harder than before and carry forward the spirit of the Olympics: faster, higher and stronger.

When Lisa was ten, I came across a picture of myself when I was ten and I showed it to her: “That’s me!” she said with a smile. But I shook my head. We could have been twins. Yes, she looked just like me, and I thought she was a beautiful and smart girl, full of confidence. What a pity I had missed myself. The fat little girl in the photo looked at me, as if she was reminding me that I was not a beached whale, but a beautiful little girl with dreams and gifts. Something started to stir in my mind.
Then I told her the story of the little girl by the pool. After hearing my story, Lisa was a bit confused about my life’s being shaped because of a hateful little girl’s words. But I explained quickly that I had already forgiven her. Anyhow, that was life, and you must find yourself once again. With this, Lisa smiled at me, “Oh, it seems that I’m a really lucky daughter, because I have a beautiful good mother. Time to swim now!”Watching her lively figure going away, I strongly believed that life is not measured by the size of our clothes but by who we are.
