The topic of this module is about accidents. And the first unit is a listening and speaking class, which mainly discusses the traffic accidents. This topic is close to students’ life, and it is helpful to arouse students’ awareness of safety. Grammatically, Module 7 practices the past continuous tense at a particular time in the past, while this module helps students practice the past continuous tense with “while”, “when” and “as”. The previous module was learnt as a preparation for this module. After learning this class, students will have a better understanding of the reasons and results of accidents and learn how to reduce the risk of an accident.

Step 1. Warm-up activities (8 minutes)
Lead-in
The teacher greets the students and introduces herself briefly. Introduce the topic of accident in the self-introduction part.
Meanwhile introduce the past continuous tense in self-introduction.
Watch a video
Watch a clip of video about accidents. Then ask students to answer several questions.
How many kinds of accidents did the video show
Why does these accidents happen
Then let the students answer these two questions and discuss the reasons of accidents.
Step 2. Pre-listening activities (6 minutes)
Pair-work: Prediction
Ask students to work in pairs and predict the reason of the accident.
Students may practice like this:
A: Was the driver going fast B: Yes, he was./ No, he wasn’t.
A: Was the driver looking B: Yes, he was./ No, he wasn’t.
A: Was the driver talking on his mobile phone B: Yes, he was./ No, he wasn’t.
B. Listen and underline the correct words.

Step 4. Post-listening (12 minutes)
Group work: Investigation.
Create a situation: An accident happened at around 7:00 p.m. yesterday evening. A car hit a boy around the corner, and the boy was badly injured. But the driver went away. So the policeman will ask some people a few questions to find out who was the driver.
Divide students into groups of four or five students and give them card of their roles.
Ask students to practice in groups and choose two to three groups to show their dialogue before the students.
Emotional education.
Ask students to discuss what they learnt from this lesson.
Arouse students’ emotion with “Follow traffic rules, cherish our lives”.
Step 5. Homework (1 minute)
1. Write a passage about an accident with the words and expressions we learnt.
2. Search more information about the traffic accident and make a poster.
