In the San Diego Zoo, there lived Lucas, a four-year-old African penguin(企鹅). Lucas was not like the others because he suffered from a disease known as bumble foot, which includes a range of bad foot conditions that stop animals from standing upright, and a lack of treatment can lead to possible death.
For Lucas, life had been a series of treatments and disappointments. The zoo’s team had tried everything, but nothing seemed to work on his disease. Dr. Beth Bicknese, a member of the zoo’s team, said, “I’ve looked after Lucas for years. I am very sad when Lucas develops pains.”
Then, there was a hope. The zoo’s team got the help of Thera-Paw, a company that designs products to help animals move better.
“The orthopedic shoes(矫形鞋)from Thera-Paw help Lucas to fully join the group and show behaviors that are more typ cal for a penguin— such as climbing the rocks, swimming, nesting and finding a suitable mate,” said Dr. Beth Bicknese.
Debbie Denton, a senior wildlife care specialist in the team, was there when Lucas first put on his shoes. “We were pleasantly surprised to see the immediate change in him,” she said. “Seeing him move about now gives us hope that he may be OK going forward and able to live a full life.”
With every step Lucas took, he walked better, stood up straighter, and was more balanced. The rocky place that was hard to move around before was now fun to explore for Lucas.

The Chinese dragon, also known as the“loong”, standing for strength, fearlessness and kindness, is a cultural symbol for good business, rich harvests and good health. Unlike the European dragons, the Chinese dragons don’t give out fire. Instead, they are often connected with water. The Year of the Dragon brought extra joy to the worldwide Spring Festival celebrations from Zurich to Addis Ababa, firing interest in Chinese customs and history. In Zurich, Switzerland, Michael Hitz, a local person, tasted 40 types of Chinese dishes at a festival organized by Chinese Traditional Culture Association of Zurich for the Year of Dragon, offering a rich food cultural experience to the community.
Similarly, in Harare, Zimbabwe, the China-Zimbabwe Friendship High School hosted lively local dances and drum performances to welcome the Year of the Dragon. At the same time, the students enjoyed Chinese martial arts inspired by a performance from the Henan Provincial Shaolin Wushu Training Center. Brenda Moyo, a local student, found the martial arts challenging but wonderful.
An acrobatics(杂技)performance in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, enjoyed by Temesgen Yitayew, a student learning Chinese, showed how the friendship between China and Ethiopia was growing stronger. Yitayew thought more events like this should be held to support cultural exchange, carrying the flags of both nations as a symbol of unity.

When I entered the vet hospital, the vet helper was helping another customer. She knew what kind of cat food I needed to buy and asked if I wanted a partial case(半箱)or a full case. Thinking I was always busy, I decided to buy a full one.
Just then another new customer hurried in and rushed to the front of the vet helper. The vet helper asked him to wait after me. Since I wasn’t in a hurry, I told the helper to serve the gentleman first. I could go to the pharmacy and give them time to do the paperwork while I was gone.
The helper said, “Thanks, that would be great!”
The gentleman said sorry for his cutting in the line just now because of something important to do, and said, “You should go first— you were here before me.”
“No worries, you go right ahead. My pleasure,” I said.

W: Hello, I have some information about your English classes. Listen carefully. The school opens on Monday and all students should do an English test then. Your first lesson is on Tuesday. There are three levels. If your lesson is too easy or too difficult, don’t worry. You can try a different level on Wednesday. Now, about the rooms. English lessons are usually taught in Rooms A, B and C. But when you go to do your test, please go to Room C. It’s the only one that’s big enough for everyone to sit in and write at the same time. English lessons usually start at eight and last for two hours. You have two lessons each morning with a twenty-minute break between them when you can buy some coffee and snacks. Your English test only takes an hour, however. So you have time to look around the school on your first day.

New Year’s Day is just around the corner. I am writing to invite you to spend it with me at my home.
I have planned a fun day for us, which includes going to a market, where we can enjoy the festive atmosphere, try some delicious snacks, and buy some gifts. At night, we can sing songs and watch movies. I’m sure we will enjoy ourselves on that day.
I am looking forward to seeing you and making this New Year’s Day a memorable one.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
I went back to the vet’s after about ten minutes. I walked up to the vet helper, and she was waiting with a huge grin. “You don’t have to pay! That gentleman bought all your cat food for you!” “What the !” I was so surprised. “Did he know how much it cost before he decided to buy it ” “Yes! He asked first. I thanked him many times for you! I also asked him why he bought the food for you. He said your kindness just now helped him a lot and you asked him to do so, too. He wanted to pass on your kindness.”
Holding the cat food paid by the gentleman, I felt good inside. The gentleman’s action not only made it easier for me to pay for the cat food but also made me believe in the kindness of people. On my way home, I couldn’t stop smiling, thinking about how being polite had led to such a nice surprise. I decided that I would keep looking for opportunities to help others, no matter how small, to keep the cycle of kindness going.
