常借助于并列连词 and, but, or 或连词词组 not only... but also..., not... but...。

Dear Laura,
Thanks for your message. Yes, I'm having a great time on my exchange program in France. I was a bit nervous before I arrived here, but there is no reason to be. My host family are really nice. They go out of their way 1 ( make) me feel at home. The grandmother has a teenage granddaughter about my age 2 is really kind. She always talks to me in French to help me practice. And you wouldn't believe how quickly my French has 3 ( improve)! I'm very comfortable speaking French now. 4 I still make lots of mistakes, it doesn't worry me as it used to.
My biggest challenge is learning how to behave at the dinner table. 5 you can imagine, things are really different from the way they are at home. For example, you shouldn't put your bread on your plate. You 6 ( suppose) to put it on the table! I thought that was pretty strange at first, but now I'm used to it. You shouldn't eat 7 ( something) with your hands except bread, not even fruit. You have to cut it up and eat it with a fork. Another thing is that it is very 8 ( polite) to say you' re full. If you don't want any more food, you should just say, “It was delicious.” Also, you shouldn't put your elbows on the table. I have to say that I find it difficult to remember everything, but I'm 9 ( gradual) getting used to it. I don't find French customs so strange any more.
Dear Laura, I’ ll write again soon and tell you more about my life in France. Hope you are having 10 good school year.
Yours,
Lin Yue

I spent many years of my life pretending(假装). I told myself that I was happy with my job, although I knew from the 1 day that it wasn't fit for me. I pretended to agree with everyone around me to avoid the risk of disagreement. After spending so much time hiding my true self, I 2 felt that I’ d had enough of that — I was really tired of pretending.
I made up my mind 3 pretending. It's easier to pretend than to be truly honest with ourselves, but it comes with a heavy price. If I pretend my job is satisfying, I probably won't make the necessary changes to create a new job which will bring pleasure to my life. If I pretend to be happy in a relationship when my true 4 clearly say something else, how can I improve my relationship

bad British fun hope pleasure power they total understand win
Is it true that we British people have a different sense of humour from people in other countries Let's have a look at what we laugh at in 1 .
To us British people, 2 and important people often cause laughter. It's not just politicians(政客) who make us laugh, but anyone whose job is to tell other people what to do and who takes 3 too seriously.
We laugh at the power, but also, pitifully, at anyone who is treated 4 . We know they cannot win, but if they do win sometimes, it's even 5 . Our clowns(小丑) are often silly people doing silly things, while in America, they are often clever people doing clever things — and 6 at last.
The fact that we laugh when other people might feel 7 is one of the strangest things to learn about British humour. We do have a strong sense of irony(反讽). After some terrible experience, we might say, “Not very 8 .” And we might say in the middle of a typhoon, “It’ s a bit windy today.” or“There is a tiny problem,” when something has gone 9 wrong. We don’ t like to express strong feelings, but just“keep calm and carry on”.
Another thing that can make it difficult 10 British humour is that we don't always laugh or even smile when we say something funny. We often keep a straight face or use an unsmiling expression when we' re making a joke.
Do you think the British sense of humour is special

A Cloud of Hope and Danger
In 2050, a small cloud floats through the air in a hospital operating room(手术室). In the room a patient, suffering from cancer, lies on a table. The cloud surrounds(包围) the patient, 1 her body and filling her lungs(肺). The cloud is not smoke or steam. It is made of millions of microscopic robots called nano-robots(纳米机器人). These tiny robots move from cell(细胞) to cell in the 2 body, destroying the cancer cells.
3 cancer with nano-robots is only an idea today, but scientists say that it would be possible in the future. Using nano-robots for good 4 such as fighting disease or repairing the environment may be the solutions to many of today's problems.
However, nano-robots could be a 5 risk as well. Since nano-robots are so tiny, they will have to work in large teams of many thousand to many million. For this reason, nano-robots will have to be programmed to build 6 . Scientists will not have the ability to build millions of nano-robots one by one.
This 7 to reproduce(复制) is making some scientists worried. What if something goes wrong in the programming Quite a lot of crazy nano-robots would be far 8 than any disease. Some people think that if they get out of control, nano-robots could destroy the Earth.
What should be done Should we continue 9 nano-robots or should we search for other methods This is one of the many difficult 10 that we have to make in the future.

Great news! Pandas are no longer in danger. They are on the road of recovery(恢复). Back in the 1980s, there were as few as 1,114 pandas in China. But the most recent survey in 2014 showed that there were 1,864 pandas living in the wild.
Since 1981, the Chinese government has been working with World Wildlife Fund(WWF) 1 the world's most famous bears and their home. They 2 67 nature parks so far, which have protected nearly two-thirds of wild pandas by giving them space to live in and bamboo to eat.
It is an achievement to celebrate. But the bamboo forests are getting 3 , so pandas are still losing their home. The WWF warned that climate(气候) change could destroy(摧毁) more than 35% of the 4 home in the next 80 years.

An old saying goes, “When in Rome(罗马), do as the Romans do.” I learned the 1 of this when I studied in Russia.
One day I invited some of my Chinese friends to a famous local restaurant in Moscow. My guests and I were 2 from visiting Red Square and happy about our meeting. I so know nervous Jimmy with answer understand look much
Nine-year-old Jimmy was given a task in school to write a story on“My family’ s ancestors(祖先)”. The purpose was for the kids to 1 their family history.
In search of some 2 for his task, Jimmy interviewed his grandmother who of course 3 nothing about the reason why Jimmy asked such questions.
When she was asked, “Granny, where did I come from ” his grandma was quite 4 . Why didn’ t he ask his parents She had to be quite careful when talking 5 a kid about such a subject. She wanted to buy some time, 6 she replied, “Well, sweetie, the stork(鹳鸟) brought you.” She said no 7 , hoping that the subject would be dropped until Jimmy's parents came back.
“So, where did Mom come from ”
“The stork brought her also.”
“Well, then where did you come from ”
“The stork brought 8 too, sweetie.”
“All right, thanks, Granny.”
9 grandmother did not think anything more about his questions. Three days later, when she was tidying up and 10 at Jimmy's desk, she read the first sentence of his paper, “For three generations(辈) there have been no natural births in our family.”

by life take that serious one they send happy influence
I once had an unforgettable experience that has affected and directed the way I think and act now.
When I was about seven years old, my grandfather 1 me to a fish pond on a farm and told me to throw a stone into the water. He told me to watch the circles created 2 the stone. Then he asked me to think of myself as that stone. “You may create lots of circles in your life, but the waves 3 come from those circles will disturb(干扰) the peace of all the people around you,” he said 4 . “Remember that your circle may spread to many other circles, meaning that your thoughts or actions may disturb others’ 5 . You are responsible for what to put in your circle. If you want, the good or peace that comes from your circle 6 to others. At the same time, the anger or jealousy(嫉妒) coming from your circle will also spread to other circles. You should allow the good feelings 7 others, not the bad ones, because you are responsible for both.”
That was the 8 time I had heard my grandfather tell me these. I had realized that each person's 9 or anger can move out into the world. If we are filled with doubt or anger, we cannot create world peace. We spread the feelings and thoughts that we hold inside, whether we speak 10 or not. These circles are spreading into the world, creating beauty or making troubles to other circles of life.
