For over ten years I had been trying to lose the extra weight I was carrying. I tried several techniques, and even dangerous methods like simply not eating, but I didn’t lose much weight.
13 months ago, I decided to turn to weight lifting. I had already been exploring the gym community on TikTok. For me, it was so encouraging to watch online videos about other people’s fitness journeys and see how people changed over the course of a year or so by lifting weights. I got to the stage where I really wanted to change the way I was.
The first two months was horrible. At first, I was in pain every day. And I didn’t feel like there were any changes. At the same time, I was rebalancing my diet to include 50 percent vegetables, 30 percent protein, and only 20 percent carbs (碳水化合物), which was causing a few digestion (消化) problems.
After the first two months, I had been noticing slight changes that made me want to continue. After reaching the six-month point, I noticed drastic changes in my stomach area. I cried because I felt so happy. I had been struggling for over ten years with that area, and seeing the fat there start to go away was a real relief (宽慰) to me.
I felt so proud of myself for keeping up my efforts, even when I didn’t see any results. Sometimes, I don’t think about why I’m going to the gym — it’s just my habit. I believe that it’s important to do something for your health daily. For me, it’s about wanting to do it every day, not just at the beginning, or even for six months. I think instead of wanting to remove fat as fast as possible, you have to do something that is going to last for a long time.
4. Why did the author decide to practice weight lifting
A. The sport is popular on TikTok.
B. He was encouraged by online videos.
C. People in his community advised him to do so.
D. He suffered from health problems because of his weight.
5. What do we know about the author during his first two months of weightlifting
A. He ate a lot of meat. B. He lost weight rapidly.
C. He developed an illness. D. He had physical suffering.
6. What does the underlined word “drastic” mean in paragraph 4
A. Big. B. Gradual. C. Potential. D. Short-term.
7. What can we learn from the author’s experience
A. Stick to what we do to the end. B. Have clear plans and targets for each day.
C. Focus more on the process than the result. D. Care about both physical and mental health.
C
People question whether social media is making modern society less empathetic (有同感的). Some studies show that heavy social media users are less empathetic, while others suggest quite the opposite.
To learn more about the question, we asked over 1,250 American participants (参与者) how often they checked social media. They also completed questionnaires (问卷) where they decided whether they have the qualities that researchers call empathy, such as thinking from other people’s point of view, feeling concerned for other people in trouble, and feeling bad when others feel bad.
Our study found that the more social media people reported using the lower their levels of empathy were. This finding didn’t change much according to the type of social media they use, their gender (性别), or education. However, we only asked American adults. Is it possible that the relationship we found would not be true elsewhere
Indeed, researchers in other areas have found different results. Researchers in the UK, Spain, and the Netherlands have shown that, in their countries, higher social media use was related to higher empathy. An Indian study found no relationship between the two.
To learn the big picture, we compared all these studies. We found that the relationship between social media use and empathy differed based on two things: age and nationality. In general, studies carried out in Europe found a positive connection between social media use and empathy, while studies in the U. S. found no meaningful or negative connection. Besides, research done with children under 18 showed a positive connection, while research with adults found no connection.
Cultural differences may explain the difference. Americans are more likely to post news about their personal achievements online. It is no surprise that Americans who use social media regularly are not developing their empathy skills. But populations outside of America appear to use social media for different purposes including strengthening friendships. For them, more social media use is connected with being more empathetic. Perhaps people’s purposes for using social media can tell us more about their character.
8. What is the main purpose of the research described in the passage
A To prove that social media makes people less empathetic.
B. To study the impact of social media on American adults.
C. To compare the empathy levels of different nationalities.
D. To explore the relationship between social media use and empathy.
9. Which of the following factors about the participants was important for the first study
A. Age. B. Gender. C. Interest. D. Education.
10. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true
A. All studies show that heavy social media users are less empathetic.
B. The relationship between social media use and empathy is the same in all countries.
C. Research showed a positive connection between social media use and empathy in the UK, Spain and the Netherlands.
D. American adults using social media regularly are more likely to develop their empathy skills.
11. Which statement will the author probably agree with
A. Indians like to show off online.
B. Children are more empathetic than adults.
C. Americans are more empathetic than Europeans.
D. Reasons behind social media use show a person’s character.
12. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. The Positive Impact of Social Media on Empathy.
B. Why Americans Are Less Empathetic on Social Media.
C. Social Media and Empathy: A Complex Relationship.
D. How to Develop Empathy Skills through Social Media.

Our study found that the more social media people reported using, the lower their levels of empathy were.

Afraid to face their disappointed looks, yet knowing he should be honest, Li Ming hesitated. Just then, his mother called him to help set the table.
As they sat down for dinner, the atmosphere was tense. Li Ming’s father asked about his day, and Li Ming knew he couldn’t avoid the topic any longer. “Dad, Mom, I have something to tell you,” he said, his voice trembling. “I failed the exam.” The room fell silent. His father’s face turned strict, and his mother looked worried. “How could this happen ” his father demanded. “You’ve been studying so hard.”
Li Ming felt a wave of shame and frustration. He tried to explain, but his words were chaotic (混乱的). “I… I don’t know.
