When I was nine, my best friend nearly choked to death on a gobstopper, a type of hard candy. After several attempts, she coughed up the candy. I haven’t had a gobstopper since and I have carried with me a fear of seeing that scene again. Sadly, as I discovered this week, lightning can strike twice.
I was getting off a tube train in London when I noticed a woman coughing. I slowed down, watching her carefully. I had learned that coughing is rarely a sign that something is terribly wrong. Suddenly, the woman stopped coughing, her eyes widened and she bent over.
When I went over to ask if she was OK, she looked up at me, panicked, and pointed to her back. I started hitting her back and screaming for help. Despite having watched a few videos, I was terrified that I wouldn’t be able to correctly perform the Heimlich, a first-aid method, and that I would have to walk away with guilt for her death. But it was just the two of us, alone at an underground station; if I didn’t try to help, no one would. Thankfully, much like with my friend, after a few sharp hits, whatever had been stuck in her throat came loose. She thanked me, almost embarrassed, and walked up to the lift. I followed behind her, shaking, with tears in my eyes.
By the time we reached the lift, we had both calmed down. She took my hands and thanked me again, before disappearing. She might have been fine without my hurried hits on her back—I may not have actually saved her life—but at least she knew that someone, a virtual stranger whom she would never see again, cared.
This experience also taught me about the bystander effect, where people assume that others will help, leading to inaction. I get it: the fear of making things worse, especially if you have no medical training, is real. Research suggests that when a “medically competent” person is assumed to be available during an emergency, direct help from others is far less likely to occur. Sometimes, though, regardless of who else could be nearby, it may be useful to get involved. So it was with the coughing woman on the tube.
4. How did the friend’s choking incident affect the author
A. She lived with a sense of guilt.
B. She realized the importance of first aid.
C. She deepened her understanding of the bystander effect.
D. She developed a fear of witnessing similar events.
5. What did the author do to help the woman on the tube
A. She relieved the woman’s coughing.
B. She walked the woman up to the lift.
C. She performed first aid by hitting the woman’s back.
D. She found a “medically competent” person for her.
6. Which situation can be described as the bystander effect
A. You volunteered to help an old man carrying a heavy bag.
B. You asked your brother who is a doctor to save a dying woman.
C. You walked away after the rescue men asked you to leave the scene .
D. You avoided involvement when seeing an injured lady on the road.
7. What can we learn from this passage
A. A good turn deserves another. B. Every cloud has a silver lining.
C. Action speaks louder than inaction. D. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C
You might text your friend a white lie to get out of going to dinner, exaggerate your height on a CV online to appear more attractive or invent an excuse for your boss over email to save face.
Social psychologists have long wondered where people tend to lie the most — that is, in person or through some other communication medium. A 2004 study was among the first to investigate the connection between deception (欺骗) rates and technology. Jeff Hancock’s team had 28 students report the number of social interactions they had through face-to-face communication, the phone, instant messaging and email over seven days. Students also reported the number of times they lied in each social interaction.
The results suggested people told the most lies on the phone and the fewest through email, which is broadly in line with a “feature-based model”. According to the model, specific aspects of a technology — whether people can communicate back and forth smoothly, whether the messages are fleeting and whether communicators are distant — predict where people tend to lie the most.
When Hancock conducted his study, few students had a Facebook account. The iPhone was in its early stage. What would his results look like nearly 20 years later
In a new study, I recruited (招募) 250 people and studied interactions from more forms of technology. The participants recorded their social interactions and number of interactions with a lie over seven days, across face-to-face communication, social media, the phone, texting, video chat and email. The results show people seem to lie according to the “feature-based model”.
There are several possible explanations for these results. Phone and video chat for example, might make deception less costly to a social relationship if caught. Deception rates might also differ across technology because people use some forms of technology for certain social relationships. For example, people might only email their colleagues (同事), while video chat might be a better fit for more personal relationships.
People often believe just because we use technology to interact, honesty is harder to come by. Not only is this perception (看法) misguided, but it is also unsupported by enough evidence. The belief that lying is common in the digital age just doesn’t match the data.
8. What does the author intend to do in the first paragraph
A. Reveal the tendency of people to tell lies on social media.
B. Introduce the topic of technology’s role in people’s telling lies.
C. Demonstrate the increasing popularity of social media.
D. Illustrate people’s ways of social interactions.
9. What do the studies by Hancock and the author have in common
A. Their participants were all students.
B. They both aimed to reduce deception rates.
C Their results were both consistent with a certain model.
D. They analyzed the same kind of social relationships.
10. What can be inferred from paragraph 6
A. Social media users tend to lie more.
B. Close people are more likely to lie to each other.
C. Lying can greatly influence friendships.
D. Deception rates can be reduced by using technology.
11. What does the author think of people lying in social interactions
A. It is unacceptable among friends.
B. It worsens interpersonal relationships.
C. It doesn’t happen as frequently as expected.
D. It is in line with advances in technology

After tracking flowers on a prairie (草原) in Minnesota for 21 years, scientists reported that the plants reproduce more successfully in the year following a carefully controlled burn. Understanding the relationship between prairie plants and fire is important for preserving this ecosystem which is becoming rapidly smaller, says Stuart Wagenius, a conservation scientist.
Fire provides an additional advantage for the narrow-leaved purple coneflower (紫锥花), as Wagenius and his colleagues say. To really bloom (开花), they need a little help: Enter the fire. Between 1996 and 2016, Wagenius says his team tracked nearly 8,000 purple coneflowers on the Staffanson Prairie Preserve. In 9 of those years, they conducted controlled burns over 400 times. “In the summer after a burn, many more plants flower,” Wagenius says. “It is just a huge flowering festival.”
Purple coneflowers and many other prairie plants were previously known to bloom energetically after fires. However, the researchers said that fire also stimulated purple coneflowers to bloom at the same time in the summer after a burn. This meant that instead of being unconnected, the purple coneflowers were surrounded by potential mates and went on to produce nearly double the number of seeds compared with other years. Wagenius says it’s not yet clear exactly how fires signal the flowers to get busy.
The new findings may help the people who manage prairies to better understand the different ways that fire affects the plants growing in these habitats, said Kathryn Yurkonis, a grassland ecologist who was not involved in the research. However, Yurkonis added, it remains to be shown how the fires influence the purple coneflower population. “This paper implies that making more seeds would mean more seeds would land on the soil and enter the population of plants — but they don’t actually examine that step,” she said. “I’d be curious to see whether this actually translates to more purple coneflowers.”
12. What is the basis for the research
A. Prairies are easy to disappear. B. Plants on a prairie are diverse.
C. Fire relates positively to prairie plants. D. Without fire, flowers won’t bloom.
13. What does the author intend to convey with figures cited in paragraph two
A. Wagenius’s team was committed indeed.
B. Samples of flowers were rich in number.
C. Time spent on the research was long.
D. The findings were relatively convincing.
14. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The result of plants being unconnected.
B. The influence of fires on prairie plants.
C. The process of prairie plants’ growing after fires.
D. The reason for plants’ blooming at the same time.
15. What is Kathryn Yurkonis’s attitude to the research finding
A. Uninterested. B. Prejudiced. C. Objective. D. Opposed.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
We humans are comparison creatures. ____16____ This quality may have evolved as a means of helping us fit into the social hierarchy (等级) of the cultures we inhabited. Regardless of the reasons, social comparison plays a significant role in how we view and evaluate ourselves, and how we interact with our world.
It used to be that our primary reference of comparison was our local communities, primarily neighbors and co-workers. Because we tend to gather around those similar to ourselves in terms of educational level, work income, and shared interests, the range of differences when we compared ourselves to others was fairly small. Unfortunately, with the emergence of the Internet, we can now compare ourselves to literally anyone in the world. ____17____ What had in previous generations been a small gap in our comparisons has now become so large and unattainable.
____18____ When so many people that are easily discoverable on the Internet seem to be so successful. famous, influential and beautiful, given our preference to compare, it is difficult not to have it influence how we view ourselves. Sadly, these comparisons usually result in our feeling inadequate and “less than”.
These harmful comparisons also damage our emotional lives. When we feel lacking, we experience a variety of unpleasant and unhealthy emotions. We feel jealousy and envy for what others have and what we lack. ____19____
It’s one thing to realize that you compare yourself to others. It’s another thing to recognize that social comparison is often corrosive (逐步侵蚀的) to you in so many ways psychologically and emotionally. It’s an entirely other thing to stop yourself from comparing yourself to others. ____20____
A. We are constantly measuring ourselves against other people.
B. Yet it is possible, and it is worth the effort for your mental health.
C. Thus, we are now exposed to groups that are quite different from us.
D. We believe that there is something wrong with us compared to others.
E. We can even feel bitterness and anger at others for the unfairness of it all.
F. Comparing ourselves to others has the potential to increase our life experience.
G. This new level of comparison has huge implications for our psychological lives.

“Not again!” Aliya shouted angrily, looking at the marks she had attained in her maths test.
It seemed as if failing in the math test had become a part and parcel of her life. Despite her efforts, she had been unable to perform well. Tears in her eyes, she quickly shoved (乱塞) the paper into her bag before any classmate could make a rude comment on her.
Effortlessly, using the back of her palm, she was wiping the tears when her teacher Mrs Leena noticed her. She came to Aliya’s desk and, in a soft voice, asked her to see her during the break time.
Wondering what it could be, Aliya waited impatiently for lunchtime. Finally, when the bell rang, she made her way to Mrs Leena. As soon as she saw Aliya, she gestured for her to sit on the empty chair beside her.
She carefully studied her face, cleared her throat with a bright smile and said, “You seem to be anxious. I think I know what’s bothering you. If you allow me I think together we may come up with a good solution.”
With a puzzled look, she said, “Well ma’am, you know I have been struggling in maths since the beginning of the term. It seems as if no matter how hard I work, I am unable to get the desired result. I feel so upset,” she said sadly.
“You need not be so gloomy,” encouraged Mrs Leena. “With these three key ingredients: hard work, determination and resilience (韧性), you will move ahead and succeed. It’s always the first step that’s difficult, but once you decide not to look back and not give up, you will be successful, my e on, gather yourself and let’s work on it together.”
From that day onwards, Aliya worked hard, religiously following her teacher’s advice. By the time the final exams drew close, she had thoroughly revised her math book and well-prepared.

D You avoided involvement when seeing an injured lady on the road.
7. What can we learn from this passage
A. A good turn deserves another. B. Every cloud has a silver lining.
C. Action speaks louder than inaction. D. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. D 7. C
Phone and video chat, for example, might make deception less costly to a social relationship if caught.
C. Their results were both consistent with a certain model.
【答案】8 B 9. C 10. B 11. C

B. Prejudiced. C. Objective. D. Opposed.

【答案】On the exam day, a fear of failure upset her stomach. Aliya's heart raced as she sat down in front of the desk. She took a deep breath, trying to recall the encouragement from Mrs. Leena. As she began the test, the questions seemed difficult at first, but she pushed through, step by step, using the strategies she had learned. With each question she completed, her confidence grew. By the end of the exam, Aliya felt a sense of accomplishment, not because she was sure she had aced it, but because she had faced her fears and given it her all.
She passed her math exam with an unbelievable A grade on her report card. The moment she saw the grade, tears of joy welled up in her eyes. It wasn't just a grade. It was a testament to her hard work, her teacher's unwavering support, and the resilience she had found within herself. Aliya left the room with her head held high, no longer the student who dreaded math, but a young woman who had conquered her fears and believed in her abilities.
