Birthdays often involve surprises. But this year’s surprise on the birthday of the great British playwright William Shakespeare is surely one of the most dramatic.
On April 22, one day before his 441st birthday anniversary, experts discovered that one of the most recognizable portraits of William Shakespeare is a fake. This means that we no longer have a good idea of what Shakespeare looked like. “It’s very possible that many pictures of Shakespeare might be unreliable because many of them are copies of this one,” said an expert from Britain's National Portrait Gallery.
The discovery comes after four months of testing using X-rays, ultraviolet light, microphotography and paint samples. The experts from the gallery say the image commonly known as the “Flower portrait”—was actually painted in the 1800s, about two centuries after Shakespeare’s death. The art experts who work at the gallery say they also used modem chemistry technology to check the paint on the picture. These checks found traces of paint dating from about 1814. Shakespeare died in 1616, and the date that appears on the portrait is 1609.
“We now think the portrait dates back to around 1818 to 1840. This was when there was a renewed interest in Shakespeare's plays,” Tarnya Cooper, the gallery’s curator(馆长), told the Associated President.
The fake picture has often been used as a cover for collections of his plays. It is called the Flower portrait as one of its owners, Desmond Flower, gave it to the Royal Shakespeare Company.
“There have always been questions about the painting,” said David Howells, curator for the Royal Shakespeare Company. “Now we know the truth, we can put the image in its proper place in the history of Shakespearean portraiture.”

What if our babies could somehow tell us what they’re thinking about, what they want, and what makes them unhappy Robyn Holt, researcher for Baby Talk New Zealand, says they can. Holt heard about baby sign language through an advertisement and decided to go along to a workshop (研讨会).
“Sign language is something that’s always interested me, and I thought, it could be really cool to try this with a baby because we are always guessing all the time what they actually want.”
Holt started using baby sign language with her baby son Benjamin, now 12, and within two weeks he started to sign the sign for milk. She has since used it with her two younger sons Dominic, 8, and Matthew, 3.
Baby sign language is nothing new: the practice (which is based on adult sign language) has been out in America for more than 30 years. But it is enjoying a rebirth in New Zealand.
The idea behind baby sign language is that babies do have the ability to communicate their needs if they are given the right tools to do so. Although many mothers develop an intuition (直觉) about whether their baby’s crying is from hunger, tiredness, or pain, baby sign language creates a direct form of communication that unlocks the mystery (谜).
When babies are between 6-months and 12 to 13-months, parents can begin to teach them sign language: use the sign for milk while feeding, and also talk about milk, so that the child begins to make the link in their brain. Then they can begin to add other signs, i.e. food, sick or pain.
“I know of one parent. Her child was signing the sign for hurt by his mouth, and she realised his first teeth were growing. It makes life so much easier,” said Holt.
31. What is the function of the question at the beginning of paragraph 3
A. To express the author’s confusion.
B. To inform readers of baby’s languages.
C. To attract readers’ interest.
D. To state arguments.
32. Why did Holt go to the baby sign language workshop
A. To entertain her own children.
B. To better understand babies’ needs.
C. To help babies with language problems.
D. To develop a new system of sign language.
33. According to the text, baby sign language ______.
A. has been used in New Zealand for 30 years
B. can easily make the parents understood
C. has developed from adult sign language
D. was designed by Robyn Holt
34. What does the underlined part “the mystery” in Paragraph 5 refer to
A. The ability to communicate.
B. Mothers’ intuitions.
C. The cause of the baby’s crying.
D. Baby sign language.

If you’ve ever had an indoor plant that’s quickly withered(枯萎), you might believe that you don’t have a green thumb or you’re not cut out for growing plants. 36 The truth is that anyone can be a good plant owner. Below, we’ll walk you through something you need to know to care for your indoor plants.
Keep potting soil moist(湿润), but not wet. If your soil is either too dry or overwatered, it can damage the plant’s roots. 37 What you should do is follow guidelines on how often to water it by doing research on its specific type.
Select an area in your house that gets sufficient sunlight. Plants require sunlight in order to undergo photosynthesis (光合作用). 38 Instead, give them plenty of indirect light by putting them in a well-lit room. Besides, don’t move your plants around a lot as plants adapt themselves to their surroundings fairly slowly.
39 There are a variety of online materials you can find that will detail how you should care for the specific type of houseplant you own, including recommended humidity levels, sunlight exposure guidelines and watering guides. Most plants sold in mixed species baskets or pots need to be separated. They are grouped for appearance and not the requirements of the species.
Choose a plant that’s easy to care for. Certain tropical (热带的) plants require specific environments in order to survive, while other plants are easy to care for. For example, Chinese evergreen or painted drop tongue (Aglaonema) is commonly seen in public displays. 40 This kind of plant drops its lower leaves over time but can easily be rooted in water.
A. It is an easy low light plant.

I completely understand the anxiety you’re feeling as your English grades are not so good as before since you entered the senior high school.
As for improving your English academic performance, here are a few suggestions that might help. First of all, you should make full use of your spare time to do more listening and reading about English to increase vocabulary. It’s widely believed that practice makes perfect. Besides, having a good command of important sentence patterns of each unit is of great benefit to improving your writing. Last of all, please remember never to give in to any difficulties. Once you come across problems, you can turn to your teachers and classmates for help.
Hope that my advice will be of help to you , and I sincerely wish you all the best in your high school endeavors.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
