Four Ways Your Cat Tries to Communicate with You
Cats are amazing creatures, and while they can’t talk to us, they certainly know how to communicate their needs and feelings. It’s just up to us to learn how to listen to what they are saying.
Meowing
Cats meow at their owners for several reasons, including: to ask for food, to greet people, to ask for attention, to let you know they want to go outside/come inside. In addition, elderly cats suffering from cognitive disfunction, similar to Alzheimer’s Disease (阿尔茨海默症) in humans, may meow due to becoming confused or disoriented, so we encourage you to schedule an appointment with us if your senior cat seems confused or is meowing more than usual.
Purring
While cats do purr as a sign of contentment, they also do it as a self-comforting mechanism when sick, stressed or injured. If your cat is purring but also showing signs that something may be wrong, like hiding more than usual or refusing food/water, they could be sick or in pain.
Tail Posture
If they hold their tail straight up and have relaxed fur, they’re likely to feel happy or curious. But if their fur stands on end while their tail is straight, this indicates fear or anger. Holding the tail low or hidden between the legs indicates insecurity, and a tail that’s rapidly twitching back and forth suggests anxiety.
Rubbing
When your cat rubs against your legs or gives you head butts, they are telling you that they love you. That is not the only thing they are doing, though! Cats rub their bodies and cheeks against people and objects to mark their territory and to claim humans, other cats, and various objects as their own.
21. When cats are sick or in pain, what are they likely to do
A. Meow at their owners. B. Rub against your legs.
C. Purr and refuse food. D. Hold their tail straight up.
22. What may a cat show when it hides its tail between legs
A Insecurity. B. Depression. C. Curiosity. D. Happiness.
23. Who provides this text most probably
A. A cat sitter. B. A cat owner.
C. An animal shelter. D. A pet healthcare centre.

It all started with a simple question;“Can I paint your portrait (肖像) ”
In the summer of 2015, Brian Peterson was reading the book Love Does, about the power of love in action, when his quiet was disturbed by a homeless man. Inspired by the book, Peterson made an unexpected decision: He was going to introduce himself. In that first conversation, Peterson learned that the man’s name was Matt Faris who failed to pursue a career in music and ended up being homeless.
“I saw beauty on the face of a man who hadn’t shaved in probably a year had overgrown fingernails, and probably hadn’t had a shower in close to a year. ”Even though Peterson hadn’t pioked up a paintbrush in about eight years, he asked if he could paint Faris’s portrait. Faris said yes.
Peterson’s connection with Faris led him to form Faces of Santa Ana, a nonprofit organization focused on befriending and painting portraits of members of the community who are unhoused. Working from a black-and-white photo of the subject, Peterson chooses colors inspired by the subject’s personality and life story, creating an impressive portrait.
Peterson sells the striking artwork, signed by both subject and artist, dividing the proceeds and putting half into what he calls a“love account”for his model. He then helps people use the money to get back on their feet. Many of Peterson’s new friends use the donations to secure immediate necessities. But Peterson has learned not to make assumptions about what a person needs most. “I’ve made a mistake thinking I knew what people wanted, ” he says, “but why don’t we just ask them ”
Peterson has discovered that there’s more to the finished products than the money they bring to someone who’s down and out. The buyers tend to connect to the story of the person in the painting, finding similarities and often friendship with someone they might have otherwise overlooked. “People often tell me, ‘I was the one that would cross the street. But I see homeless people differently now, ’ ”Peterson says.
24. What brought Peterson and Faris together
A. Beauty on Faris’ face. B. Inspiration from a book.
C. Peterson’s passion for art. D. Faris’ suffering in his life.
25. What does the underlined word “mistake” in paragraph 5 refer to
A. Selling the homeless’ portraits for profits.
B. Giving instant necessities to the homeless.
C. Asking the homeless for their needs directly.
D. Taking what the homeless want for granted.
26. What does Peterson imply in the last paragraph
A. The homeless are gaining more concern.
B. The life of the homeless is different now.
C. Buyers value friendship with the homeless.
D. Figures in Peterson’s paintings are popular.
27. What can we learn from this text
A. A good model is key to a fine artwork.
B. An expected decision makes a great artist.
C. A picture really is worth a thousand words.
D. Each unfortunate person has his own misfortune.

Over 7,000 species around the world are considered endangered. That number doesn’t even include the plants, animals, and other lifeforms that are listed by some scientists as vulnerable, critically endangered, or extinct in the wild.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) maintains the most-comprehensive list of endangered species around the world. The Red List of Threatened Species, as it’s called, judges each species on five different standards for an in-depth scientific approach. According to the IUCN, an endangered species is one that meets any one of the following criteria (标准): a 50%-70% population decrease over 10 years, a total geographic area less than 5,000 square kilometers, a population size less than 2,500 adults, a restricted population of 250 adults, or a statistical prediction that it will go extinct within the next 20 years.
Though the IUCN’s Red List covers a wide range of what qualifies as an endangered species, it doesn’t quite say how a species reaches those low points. Prepare to feel guilty: the most common factor when it comes to species decline is human intervention. Loss of habitat, the introduction of a foreign species into the environment, hunting, pollution, disease, and loss of genetic variation (基因变异) are all causes of species decline and most often are a result of human activities. Take the bald eagle for example: the rise in human population and urban development of North America limited the animal’s habitat; an increase in hunting the eagles for sport lowered their population size; and the use of the pesticide DDT on farms harmed the animal’s reproductive capabilities.
But even though humans are the number one cause of species decline, classifying species as endangered encourages action to reverse the effects of human intervention. Conservation efforts by the US Fish and Wildlife Service criminalized (使非法) the hunting of bald eagles and the use of the pesticide DDT in the mid- to late 20th century. The effect was positive, as bald eagles have been on the rise and were taken off the endangered species list in 1995.
28. Which of the following species can be considered endangered
A. One that will go extinct within the next 50 years.
B. One whose population size is less than 5,000 adults.
C. One whose habitat is less than 2,500 square kilometers.
D. One whose population decreases 20% over twenty years.
29. What does paragraph 3 focus on
A. The causes of species decline.
B. The disadvantages of the pesticide.
C. A list of worldwide endangered species.
D. Common features of endangered species.
30. Why is the bald eagle mentioned as an example in the last paragraph
A. To show its rareness.
B. To blame humans for its decline.
C. To stress its importance in nature.
D To show the meaning of ranking it endangered.
31. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Entertainment. B. Health. C. Science. D. Education.
D
One of the greatest killers in the Western world is heart disease. The death rate from the disease has been increasing at an alarming speed for the past thirty years. Today in Britain, for example, about four hundred people a day die of heart disease. Medical experts know that people can reduce their chances of getting heart disease by exercising regularly, by not smoking, by changing their diets, and by paying more attention to reducing stress in their work.
However, Western health-care systems are still not paying enough attention to the prevention of the disease. There is a need for more programs to educate the public about the causes and prevention of heart disease. Instead of supporting such programs, however, the U.S. health-care system is spending large sums of money on the surgical (外科的) treatment of the disease after it develops. This emphasis (强调) on treatment clearly has something to do with the technological advances that have taken place in the past ten to fifteen years. In this time, modern technology has enabled doctors to develop new surgical techniques. Many operations that were considered impossible or too risky a few years ago are now performed every day in U.S. hospitals. The result has been a huge increase in heart surgery.
Although there is no doubt that heart surgery can help a large number of people, some people point out that the emphasis on the surgical treatment of the disease has three clear disadvantages. First, it attracts interest and money away from the question of prevention. Second, it causes the costs of general hospital care to rise. After hospitals buy the expensive equipment that is necessary for modern heart surgery, they must try to recover the money they have spent. To do this, they raise costs for all their patients, not just those patients whose treatment requires the equipment. The third disadvantage is that doctors are encouraged to perform surgery even on patients for whom an operation is unnecessary — because the equipment and expert skills are there. A government office recently stated that major heart surgery was often performed even though its chances of success were low. In one type of heart surgery, for example, only 15 percent of patients improved their conditions after the surgery. However, more than 100,000 of these operations are performed in the United States every year.
32. What effect has modern technology had on medicine
A. It has reduced the costs of medical treatment.
B. It hasn’t helped save any patients.
C. It has encouraged doctors to do more heart surgery.
D. It has helped educate people about the prevention of heart disease.
33. What does the underlined word “recover” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Boost. B. Spring up. C. Get back. D. Absorb.
34. The author would agree that ______.
A. more money should be spent on the prevention of heart disease
B. heart surgery has helped most patients improve their conditions
C. modern technology has made heart surgery more risky than before
D. the public have known a great deal about the causes of heart disease
35. Which would be the best title for the passage
A. The Greatest Killer in the West B. Heart Disease: Treat or Prevent
C. Old Technology and Heart Surgery D. Heart Surgery: Advantages

Perform stand-up comedy
Stand-up is a type of comedy in which someone performs a series of jokes in front of a live audience. Kids can create a stand-up comedy act to perform for family and friends or at a school or community talent show. ____36____ Here are some tips to help you get started.
____37____ A good first step in stand-up is watching other comedians. With an adult’s help, you can find some kid-friendly comedians on YouTube or on streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. Pay attention to what they do during their routine and what kinds of jokes work.
Write your material. To begin writing jokes, start brainstorming topics. ____38____ For instance, your friends would probably understand your funny observations about middle school, but your family may not. When you have an idea for a joke, approach it like writing a short essay.
Pull everything together. With several jokes written, you can add them to a stand-up routine, called a “set”. ____39____ Between jokes, include transitions to help link one story to the next. You should conclude with a strong “closer”, one last joke that will leave your audience laughing.
Perfect your routine. You can perform in front of a mirror or record yourself and play it back. ____40____ Next, perform in front of a friend or family member who can help you see what people laugh at the most or tell you if any of your jokes are confusing. Take notes and make changes if necessary.
When you feel comfortable with your stand-up material, it’s time to perform! Remember to take a few deep breaths. Then relax, be yourself, and have fun!

B. Ask for help.
C. These can easily meet with a favourable response from the audience.
D. Think about who your audience will be and what will be relatable to them.
