第二部分:阅读理解 (共两节,满分42.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
Teacher Leticia Denoya stands at the front of her classroom, at Natchaug Elementary School. Her first-graders sit on the reading blanket.
“Last week, we worked with our puppets (玩偶) and learned a new strategy called belly-breathing,” Denoya says. “Today, we’re gonna learn how to shake out the yuck.”
The children are quiet. They love this part, when they get to watch a video--with puppets. “Yuck is all those heavy feelings. Like when I’m nervous or scared or both, I imagine those feelings are stuck all over me,” one puppet says. “And then I shake them off, like this...” She playfully shakes her body like a wet dog. The kids can barely contain their excitement. Denoya invites them to shake it out.
The five-minute video Denoya’s students watch is part of a series produced through a new pilot program called Feel Your Best Self, or FYBS. Each video is built around a simple strategy to help kids recognize and manage their feelings.
“It’s taking what we know works,” says Emily Iovino, a trained school psychologist who’s part of the FYBS team. What works, Iovino says, is something called cognitive behavioral therapy, which involves various practical skill-building, including learning to change negative thinking patterns, better understand others’ motivations and face fears. For instance, in one video, called “Push The Clouds”, children are encouraged to visualize their sad feelings as dark storm clouds and to imagine pushing those clouds away.
For this current program at Natchaug, Denoya’s first-graders also get to make their own puppets. Denoya invites the children to slide their puppets onto their hands and asks how the puppets are feeling. Many children exclaim (喊到), “Excited!” One little girl--Navayah--raises her hand and tells Denoya that, when she showed up to school this morning, “I was sad and nervous.” It turns out that this was Navayah’s first day at Natchaug. It’s a good thing that it started with learning how to shake out the yuck. “I’m feeling better!” Navayah says. She’s made two friends.
“Teaching students to manage their emotions can have a great influence,” says Denoya. “This kind of harmony is showing up school-wide.”
21. What does the author intend to illustrate by describing Denoya’s class
A. A cognitive behavioral therapy.
B. An enjoyable hobby shared by students.
C. A novel teaching method of managing emotions.
D. An effective way to catch students’ attention in class.
22. What can we infer about the FYBS program according to Iovino
A. It is nature-inspired. B. It is science-backed.
C. It is puppet-focused. D. It is technology-based.
23. Why does the author mention the example of Navayah
A. To prove the positive impact of the FYBS program.
B. To introduce students’ responses to the new technology.
C. To highlight the necessity of using puppets in teaching.
D. To show the advantage of Natchaug Elementary School.
24. What may be the best title for the text
A. Instructive skill-building plans B. Social-emotional learning puppets
C. Competent teacher Leticia Denoya D. A new strategy to promote harmony
B
If you’ve ever used bluetooth, Wi-Fi or gotten driving directions from Google Maps, take a moment to say thanks to Hedy Lamarr.
The Austrian-American actress, who was once called the “most beautiful woman in the world”, was born in Austria in 1914, and made her way to Hollywood in 1937, where she starred in some highly acclaimed (受到赞扬的) films. Beyond being an actress, though, Lamarr was a pioneering inventor. She was disinterested in partying and socializing with her workshop. Her inventions ranged from a tablet that could dissolve in water and transform it into a soda drink, to an improved design for traffic lights.
By far, her most significant invention was sparked by her desire for helping America win a terrible war. Lamarr was of Jewish descent, and she was horrified by the news that was coming from WWII. She desperately wanted to help the Aliied Forces defeat the Nazis. One of the Allied Forces’ biggest problems was that their technology for guiding torpedoes (鱼雷) was often influenced by the Nazis. German U-boats could escape from Allied torpedoes by simply jamming the single radio frequency they used for guidance. So, to deal with this issue, Lamarr came up with a creative solution: frequency hopping.
The tricky part was that the shifting frequency had to take place in synchronization (同步) with the radio transmitter guiding the torpedo. Otherwise, it would fail and the torpedo would go off track. However, Lamarr managed to overcome this challenge in 1942.
Lamarr’s invention was never used by the US Navy during World War II, but it laid the foundation s for a broad range of radio communications technologies that we use today. Frequency hopping is now used for the bluetooth technology that we find in countless devices, and was also used in early forms of Wi-Fi, and it laid the foundation for the GPS you use on your smart phone on a regular basis. The world wouldn’t be quite the same without Lamarr’s inventive mind.
25. What can we learn about Hedy Lamarr
A. She was born in America.
B. She started her acting career in 1914.
C. She didn’t enjoy socializing with others.
D. She was famous for her inventions in many fields.
26. What’s mainly discussed in paragraph 3
A. How Lamarr devised frequency hopping.
B. Why Lamarr invented frequency hopping.
C. Who influenced Lamarr the most in her career.
D. What challenges Lamarr met when improving her invention.
27. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To stress the importance of invention.
B. To help people know more about WWII.
C. To call for people to develop interest in science.
D. To praise Lamarr’s contribution to modern communications.
28. In which column of a newspaper can we probably find the text
A. Health. B. People. C. Politics. D. Art.

Victorian state schools have blocked students and staff from ChatGPT while they assess the implications of the popular AI technology.
The move comes amid fears from educators that students will use ChatGPT to cheat on assignments, accidentally introduce inaccuracies in their work, or write essays in a way that will keep them from learning the material.
The Department of Education confirmed that access to the site at Victorian government schools has been blocked from Department servers and devices as a temporary measure due to ChatGPT’s terms of use specifying (明确规定) that users must be at least 18 years of age. “The department is undertaking further analysis of the implications of these emerging technologies and is preparing advice for schools,” a spokesman for the department said.
Many international education bodies have banned the AI system, fearing students will use it to generate written work, although a number of educational experts have argued it has potential to help improve the work of disadvantaged students.
University leaders from across Australia have held emergency meetings on how to deal with the new plagiarism (抄袭) threat. They are set to meet again for further discussions. Andrew Dalgleish, president of the Victorian Principals’ Association had not brought in a blanket ban but was quick to assess the benefits for teachers and children, but also the risks. “We want to see schools support the safe and appropriate use of these tools,” Andrew Dalgleish said.
Australian Primary Principals Association president Malcolm Elliott said it was“sensible” for schools to block access to ChatGPT. “We need to approach this with our eyes open and think its negative implications as well. We have to understand this technology well and have very clear rules around how it’s used,” Mr Elliott said. “Clearly, artificial intelligence is here to stay and we need to come to grips with it because it will have an impact on all of our society.”
29. What is the main reason for banning Victorian public schools from ChatGPT
A. ChatGPT sets an age limit on getting access to it.
B. ChatGPT may have a negative impact on learning.
C. The government hasn’t put forward guiding proposals.
D. Victorian public schools’ devices cannot support the system.
30. What is Andrew Dalgleish’s attitude towards ChatGPT
A. Opposed. B. Favorable. C. Cautious. D. Doubtful.
31. Which of the following would Malcolm Elliott agree with
A. The use of ChatGPT in schools should be regulated.
B. Students poor at writing should use ChatGPT wisely.
C. ChatGPT should be applied to education as soon as possible.
D. ChatGPT will have a significant impact on educational reforms.
32. What does the underlined phrase “come to grips with” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Find fault with. B. Let go of. C. Make notes of. D. Face up to.

Resistance training, also known as strength training, uses weights or resistance to strengthen or increase one’s muscles. While many people associate such resistance with lifting free weights like dumbbells (哑铃) or using machine-based exercises such as chest or leg presses, other forms of resistance also qualify. 33
There are various benefits of resistance training. Research shows that adding 30 minutes of strength training to your workout routine each week could add years to your life. 34 Strength training has also been shown to strengthen joints and bones affected by medical conditions, and help with weight management goals since lifting weights improves metabolism (新陈代谢).
35 Monica Ciolino, a doctor of physical therapy at Washington University Physicians, says it’s also been linked to protection against degeneration of parts of the hippocampus (海马体) --a grain structure important in learning and memory. “Additionally, strength training may be associated with lower rates of depression and anxiety,” says Ciolino.
Given so many advantages, why not try strength training 36 DJ McDonough, a researcher at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, says it’s best to choose the type of resistance training that appeals most to you: weights, or resistance bands, and then learn a few simple techniques.
For instance, you can lift weights at your local gym, or you can buy several dumbbells or kettlebells to lift at home. 37 “When you are using weights, a good rule of thumb is that your muscles should be tired at the end of a set,” says McDonough, though he stresses the importance of not lifting too much, too soon. “So, start with lighter loads and increase weight and repetitions over time.”
A. How can we get started
B. What benefits can we get from strength training
C. Once you get going, you may want to branch out and add a barbell.
D. This is partly because it can significantly improve your heart health.
E. Moreover, strength training can improve mental health in several ways.
F. You’d better do strength training with the help of a professional trainer regularly.
G. Body weight exercises like push-ups or sit-ups are other examples of resistance training.

William, my husband, passed away, leaving me in our big house in Virginia. I’ve been around fora long time, and I’ve had my heart broken by many things.
“Mom, please,” my son, Mark, said on the phone. “I need you to consider moving. Just come and get closer to us--the kids will love having you here.”
Reluctantly (勉强地), I had to give in. At seventy years old, and although I felt absolutely fine and healthy, I didn’t know if living by myself, so far away from Mark, was a good idea.
“Fine,” I said. “You can start looking for a house, and I’ll start sorting things out here.”
When William passed away, a part of me did, too. I appreciated that I might lose something. The world was suddenly less energetic, and the days seemed longer. I spent evenings in the kitchen, making fresh cookies—more than I could eat, prompting me to send them over to my neighbors. We were all extremely close, and William and I often threw parties in our backyard.
The truth was that William and I had been quite popular in Virginia. Our barbecue restaurant was a beacon (灯塔) for all enthusiasts from across the state. We also had a range of spices which sold well in supermarkets. William always tested our new products on our neighbors during our dinners.
“Mom, I found the perfect house,” Mark said. “I’ve viewed it, and I think you’ll love it.”
The next thing I knew, I was packing up my life and heading to California for a new adventure.
A few weeks into my new community, California presented a challenge I had not anticipated. I knew I didn’t fit into the neighborhood. While those families were incredibly friendly to each other, they seemed to cast me aside. My attempts at conversation were often met with cold shoulders. I watched everyone glance at my house from the sidewalk. Desperate and alone, I missed everything in Virginia. I thought moving here would get rid of my loneliness, but this was just loneliness in a different guise (形式). “Maybe I need to do something,” I whispered.

The Journey to the West is my beloved Chinese novel penned by Wu Chengen during the Ming Dynasty.
This epic tale tells the adventures of Xuanzang, a Buddhist monk, and his companions as they embark on a dangerous journey. Filled with mythical creatures, imaginative legends and moral lessons, the tale deeply attracts me.
I appreciate the symbolism and cultural significance embedded in it. It serves as a timeless reminder of the human quest for wisdom and the triumph of perseverance. Wu Chengen’s masterpiece is a literary gem that continues to inspire generations.
八、读后续写
Possible version:
The next day, Mark came to see me, and I talked to him about it. I told him I would like to hold a barbecue party and bring the neighbors together for a meal. Understanding dawned in Mark’s eyes. He took me to the nearby supermarket, and we got everything we needed—including our spices. Over the next few days, with Mark and his family’s help, my backyard was transformed into a temporary barbecue restaurant. Then we sent out invitations door-to-door. As the first wisps of smoke rose into the air, carrying with them the mouthwatering scent of cooking meats, curiosity replaced the indifference I had grown accustomed to.
Neighbors arrived, drawn by the promise of a meal. I greeted them as my guests arrived, their expressions a mix of surprise and excitement. As the day went on, my backyard filled with laughter. Mark, his wife and their children moved around our guests, serving, chatting, and breaking down the invisible barriers that had once seemed impossible to overcome. “It can only get better from here, Mum.” Mark smiled. Gradually, I found a sense of belonging in the new community, and the feeling of loneliness faded away. I discovered that as long as I opened my heart and bravely embraced new challenges, life would still be filled with hope and beauty.

Text 1
W: Are you okay, dear You look tired.
M: Honestly, I think I’m coming down with something. Some of my co-workers have had this unpleasant cold that’s been going around. (1) But I couldn’t ask for leave now. I have so much work to do!
Text 2
M: Hi, Tara. Are you still coming over to my party later on
W: Yes, John! (2) I was thinking of playing a video game, but it’s okay. I don’t have any plans for tomorrow, so I can play it then.
Text 3
W: Sorry to bother you, but would you mind changing seats with me My laptop battery is about to die! (3)
M: Not at all. I don’t really like sitting this close to the door, anyway, but it was just really busy in here when I arrived!
Text 4
M: Look at those dark clouds. We can’t go anywhere if this weather continues this afternoon.
W: Indeed, carrying around an umbrella is quite inconvenient. At least, we need to wait until the big storm passes and the weather clears up. (4)
Text 5
M: Could you turn the sound off, please
W: Sorry. I’ll put my headphones on. You know, the music on this actually won a prize at this year’s Video Game Awards. The game just doesn’t feel the same without it. (5)
Text 6
W: Wow, that was amazing! Particularly Jessica’s performance. I had no idea she had such an amazing voice! (6) (7)
M: Yeah, she did really well tonight. However, if I’m completely honest, it wasn’t her best. (7)
W: Really
M: I mean, it was good! But when she’s really on form, ①Jessica has the ^ ability to be truly great. . . Tonight just wasn’t one of those nights. She just didn’t have that energy. (7)
W: Maybe she’s tired
M: She has been working really hard, recently. But honestly, I blame the piano player. He kept making mistakes, and I think that made Jessica nervous.
Text 7 (第8题为总结题)
W: What are you reading
M: Oh, it’s really cool! Back in 1995, a group of divers noticed these beautiful circle patterns on the seafloor off Japan. (9)
W: This isn’t some made-up thing from a science fiction story, is it
M: No! This is National Geographic magazine!
W: Were those patterns a result of human activities
M: Nobody knew until 17 years later, when an underwater photographer discovered a white-spotted pufferfish (河豚) busily swimming around making circles! (9) (10)
W: Wow! Why
M: To attract a mate! The patterns take seven to nine days to complete, and the moving sea is always undoing their hard work. But females make their choices based on the best designs. (10)
W: Ha! That makes sense.
Text 8 (第11题为推断题)
M: Excuse me. Do you work here
W: Yes, sir. . . I’m a voluntary worker here. Can I help
M: Could you tell me about this exhibit It’s so interesting, but I’ve no idea what it is.
W: Oh, this model of a sleeping tiger is actually a traditional Chinese pillow. (12) (13)
M: That doesn’t sound very comfortable!
W: Such pillows were widely used from the Tang period onwards. Hard materials were preferred mainly for their cooling effect. A cool head and warm feet were thought to be best for healthy sleep. (12)
M: Wow. . . Well, that’s good advice. But I can’t imagine sleeping on a porcelain (瓷) pillow!
W: Ha-ha, you and I probably couldn’t afford one! This would have belonged to someone pretty wealthy. Ordinary people would probably have had bamboo or wood pillows. Another fun fact is that ancient Chinese people often hid their valuable objects inside these hard pillows. (13)
M: That’s clever. This way, people could ensure the safety of their treasures and keep them clean.
Text 9
M: These are the plans for my new invention. (16) (17)
W: Wow, you drew these
M: I wish I were a painter just like you, (14) but I’m just an engineer. So I used AI software. But it should look pretty similar when it’s built.
W: It looks like something from a fantasy book!
M: Well, that’s no accident! The design was heavily inspired by old movies like The Time Machine and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. (15)
W: What does it do
M: It records how long you work on a project. (16) Besides the traditional time clock system, ②companies increasingly expect their employees to keep track of that stuff, so they know how much to charge their customers.
W: Yeah, my company does. But it’s hardly an original idea. There are already countless time-tracking apps out there. (16)
M: But they’re so annoying! You have to stop what you’re doing, open an app, fill out a worksheet, etc. What’s unique about my machine is the way it works. Each button relates to a particular activity. When switching tasks, all you need to do is hit a button and it’s recorded for you. (17)
W: Wow, that actually sounds like a lifesaver.
②本句中keep track之间存在“不完全爆破”现象:keep最后一个音为爆破音/p/, track第一个音为破擦音/ tr/, 两者遇到一起,前面的爆破音只做部分爆破,立即过渡到后面的破擦音上去。
Text 10
Hi Sarah, thanks for the lovely birthday message. It seems like only yesterday that you and I met in the university library! (18) But I must admit, being 50 has been pretty great, so far. As you know, I’m a huge Beatles fan, and I’ve always dreamed of visiting the U. K. to do a “Beatles tour”. Unfortunately, we doctors can’t afford to take much time off, so it’s just never happened. But. . . somehow, my wonderful wife and kids arranged everything with my boss and presented me with plane tickets on my birthday morning! I was so excited. We couldn’t fly direct to Liverpool from New York, (19) ③so we changed planes in Dublin. But from there, it’s about an hour’s flight to John Lennon Airport, which is named after my favorite Beatles member! We visited The Beatles Story Museum and watched a show. But my favorite experience was eating fish and chips on Penny Lane, the street which inspired one of the world’s greatest songs! (20) Anyway, I’ll show you the pictures next weekend! Take care!
③本句中changed planes之间存在“失去爆破”现象:changed最后一个音为爆破音/d/, planes第一个音为爆破音/p/, 两者遇到一起,前面的爆破音做出发音的准备,但并不发音。
