Years ago, we were living in a big nice house and I was going to the best elementary school in the city with my siblings. We had everything we could have wished for and we were still asking for more.
Mr. Sanchez used to mow our lawns. He was very hardworking. Often, he would bring his son that was my age. He had modest toys and modest clothes and he had a hard time fitting in with us mainly because I was too proud to consider him my equal. His name was Cabriel and he was a smart boy, despite all his “shortcomings”.
Days went by and we spent our time around each other but without any close connection. Fast forward to a couple of years and my father’s business hit the rock bottom. His partner took away all the money and left the country. Soon we had to leave our big house and settle into a small one and we were having a hard time meeting other expenses.
Mr Sanchez was very kind during that time. He and Gabriel came once a week and helped me and my siblings get things in order. That was when Gabriel and I became good friends. We started talking in the evenings when I learnt he was going to start college and he was much smarter than me.
Later we came up with a business plan and founded a start-up. I felt no shame in confessing that Cabriel was much more instrumental in the rise of our company.
Later, all of my father’s debt was paid off and we were again a happy, prosperous family. I was a truly rich man because I had a great friend by my side for my whole life.
This experience was a valuable lesson for me. It does not take a life experience for people to go from rags to riches or the other way around. What is important is someone’s person and behavior toward his other fellows in real life.
4. What happened to the author’s family in his early years
A. Life expenses went up unexpectedly. B. A financial breakdown hit his family.
C. Their house was illegally taken away. D. They lost close connection with others.
5. What changed the author’s attitude towards Gabriel
A. Their partnership in business. B. The proof of Gabriel’s capability.
C. The change of his living condition. D. The consistent help from Gabriel.
6. Which of the following words best describe Gabriel
A. Intelligent and loyal. B. Persistent and ambitious.
C. Introverted but generous. D. Hardworking but modest.
7. What can we learn from this passage
A. Like father, like son. B. Birds of a feather flock together.
C. Where there is a will, there is a way. D. Never judge a book by its cover.
C
Around the world, rivers seem to be raging. While catastrophic flooding of Pakistan’s rivers has left tens of millions without homes, a drought unseen for 500 years has squeezed Europe’s major waterways almost dry. There is little disagreement about what’s going on: climate change is causing both rainfall and droughts to intensify. The question now is how to manage those climate-changed waterways and, specifically, what role dams should play in mitigating(缓和) against the kinds of disasters.
Advocates say water storage dams will become more essential as buffers(缓冲物) against extreme water flows by absorbing water during flooding and releasing it in times of drought. Dams, they say, can help combat climate change by producing renewable hydropower(水力发电) that is cleaner than fossil fuel energy.
However, criticisms have long centered on the negative impact most dams have on biodiversity and river ecosystems. Not only do the vast amounts of concrete used to build large dams leave huge carbon footprints, there is also much evidence that greenhouse gas emissions from dams are often far greater than previously thought. Increasingly a scientific case is also being made that dams actually worsen both floods and droughts.
Now, more dam developers are turning to “run-of-river” technology, in which the river’s water flows continuously through a hydropower station without a reservoir to store it. Such projects are generally considered more environmentally friendly, but they do not allow for water to be managed according to weather conditions.
Then there are those who say we should stay away from dams, and look for ways using nature-based solutions. Many ecologists say that protecting wetlands, for example, should be a priority, since those ecosystems act as natural sponges(海绵) for floodwaters within a river basin. “We have turned river basins into economic machines that only serve people and not nature, and this creates more problems, like droughts and flooding,” says Herman Wanningen, the founder of the advocacy group Dam Removal Europe. “We have to learn to cooperate with nature and not against it anymore.”
8 Why do critics oppose the construction of dams
A. It may produce opposite effect. B. It destroys local ecosystem.
C. It needs a large amount of concrete. D. It gives off harmful gases.
9. What can we say about the “turn-to-river” projects
A. Economical. B. Inflexible. C. Fruitless. D. Popular.
10. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Dams have long lost their function as buffers.
B. Protecting wetland is a once-and-for-all solution.
C. Flooding and droughts can help promote economy.
D. The starting point of our solution should serve nature.
11. What’s the best title for the text
A. Building More Dams: A Way Out
B. Disaster Relief: Working with Nature.
C. Dams’ Traditional Role: Pros and Cons.
D. Worsening Climate Change: Take Action!
D
In the months that followed, the Ruprechts decided to rebuild a less-leaky home equipped against future wildfires and poor air quality. The family’s research led them to passive bined with carefully placed windows, such buildings can reduce a home’s energy needs by 90 percent compared to typical homes.
But the Ruprechts soon discovered their ambitions faced a major obstacle: cost. High construction prices and low insurance payouts have discouraged Marshall fire victims trying to rebuild their homes. The few local companies offering to build passive homes wouldn’t work within the couple’s budget.
That all changed with a link posted in an online community group. It directed Peter Ruprecht to a web page for the RESTORE Passive House, a three-bedroom, three-bathroom home designed for the Marshall fire burn area. The designers promised a $550,000 price tag after government incentives, which the couple could afford.
The couple is now the first to sign up to build the home. “It feels like a no-brainer,” Ruprecht said. “We’re getting better at everything in terms of construction quality, fire resistance, comfort and doing a good job for the planet.”
Debates over construction costs and climate-minded building standards have supercharged local politics in the aftermath of the Marshall fire. Earlier this year, Louisville and Superior – the two communities hit hardest by the disaster — faced intense pressure from fire victims worried compulsory green building codes would further boost construction prices. Both local governments ended up allowing those families to rebuild to earlier, less-strict standards.
The RESTORE Passive House attempts to prove green homes can fit within middle-class budgets. The task could prove critical as governments push to reduce the climate impact of buildings, which account for 13 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions and 20 percent of Colorado emissions — largely due to natural gas appliances and an electricity grid dominated by fossil fuels. Passive homes could also help protect families from climate threats like poor air quality and future fires.
12. What’s the major feature of passive buildings
A. Economic. B. Climate-friendly. C. Delicate. D. Costly.
13. What contributed to the Ruprechts’ rebuilding their new home
A. Posting their needs online to raise money.
B. Receiving assistance from insurance company.
C. Connecting with an online design and build team.
D. Negotiating with the local companies.
14. What does the underlined phrase “a no-brainer” in paragraph 4 mean
A. A risky attempt. B. A tough task.
C. A stupid idea. D. An easy decision.
15. What does the author intend to tell us in the text
A The green house for Marshall fire victims isn’t a luxury home.
B. The RESTORE Passive House aims to build green homes for free.
C. All the governments stuck to their strict green building codes.
D. The Ruprechts rebuilt their home despite high construction costs.

We are all creatures of habit. We tend to wake up at the same time each day, brush our teeth, have morning coffee and travel to work, following the same patterns every day. ____16____
Behavioral scientists who study habit formation say that many of us try to create healthy habits the wrong way. ____17____ Here are two tips, backed by research, for forming new healthy habits.
____18____ For many of us, our morning routine is the strongest, so that’s a great place to build a new habit. While brushing your teeth, you might stand on one foot to practice balance. Many of us fall into end-of-the-day patterns as well. Do you tend to sink into the sofa after work and turn on the TV That might be a good time to do a single daily yoga pose.
____19____ Wendy Wood, a research psychologist, calls the forces that get in the way of good habits “friction”. In one study, researchers changed the turning of lift doors so that workers had to wait nearly half a minute for the doors to close. ____20____ Many people are therefore convinced that taking the stairs was easier than waiting for the lift. It shows how sensitive we are to small friction in our environment. Just slowing down the lift got people to take the stairs, and they stuck with it even after the lift went back to normal timing.
A. It was just enough of a delay.
B. Why do we stop doing what’s good for us
C. But why is it so hard to form new healthy habits
D. We probably form new habits when we clear away the barriers.
E. The better way to form a new habit is to tie it to an existing habit.
F. It explains why friction prevents the progress of forming good habits.
G. For example, we set big goals to lose weight without taking proper steps.

10-year-old Buddy was just an ordinary boy but with an extraordinary heart. He had a lot of friends but never really had a “best friend” until he met Simon — a new boy in class who used a wheelchair.
Nobody showed any interest in making friends with Simon except for Buddy. He quickly bonded with Simon because he believed true friends come in different sizes and shapes...
Buddy lived with his grandma, Doris, in their small home in the suburbs. He had lost his parents five years ago in a car crash. Doris raised him, and she was all he had. Buddy promised himself that he would do anything to make his grandma proud and happy, and his prayers (祈祷) were soon answered, but in a way he never imagined.
Buddy had always wanted to help Doris with her rent, so during his free time, he cut grass for neighbors, walked dogs, and even helped older people carry their groceries home in exchange for $1. So far, he had saved $70, but that wasn’t enough to meet their expenses. Not one to be discouraged, Buddy kept going and the only other person who comforted him was Simon.
The two boys often ventured (冒险) into the woods near their school to watch birds during their spare time. It was their favorite hobby. One afternoon before the summer vacation, they went to their favorite spot in the woods. Buddy pushed Simon’s wheelchair, discussing how exciting their adventure would be. They laughed their way into the dense forest, knowing little about what was coming.
Moments later, the boys had a problem moving forward. One of the wheels sank into a branch beneath the mud. The wheelchair broke down, making it difficult to move ahead. Worse still, it seemed the rain was around the corner. The boys could hear rolling thunder across the mountains, which scared them. They wanted to run but could not leave one another. “Wait! I’ve got a plan,” shouted Buddy, trying to lean (倾斜) over and lift his friend up from the wheelchair. His attempt failed because Simon was too heavy for him.

【答案】范文1:
But he wouldn’t give up just yet. With Simon’s arms around his neck, Buddy crouched down, held Simon’s legs, and struggled to his feet. He tried to quicken his pace to avoid getting soaked. With each step forward, however, he felt the weight increasing. But he kept on moving, determined to take his friend home safely. After what seemed a life long time, they arrived at Simon’s house. At the sight of two figures stumbling in, Simon’s parents were greatly relieved. “His wheelchair broke down in the woods. So I carried him!” said Buddy. Simon’s parents were deeply moved. But Buddy didn’t consider it a big deal; he even didn’t bother to mention it to his grandma at all.
A few days later, Doris got surprising news from their landlord. Their rent had been fully covered by someone. Doris racked her brain to think of someone who might help them but failed. Later that day, the mystery was discovered. Simon’s family dropped in and thanked Doris for her wonderful grandson. “Just imagine Buddy carried him on the back the whole time!” Simon’s mother gratefully. Having known he wanted to help his grandma with rent, they decided to help him fulfill his wish. Hearing that, Buddy threw his arms around his best friend and the bond between the two families was tightened.
范文2:
But he wouldn’t give up just yet. Looking around, Buddy came up with an idea. He collected some branches nearby and tried to free the stuck wheel from the muddy branch. To the boys’ delight, he made it and the wheel chair was still damaged, but at least it was somewhat functional again. Buddy pushed the wheelchair as hard as he could and soon he was sweating all over. Although moving slowly, they managed to arrive at Simon’s house just before the rain poured down. Simon’s parents felt relieved and grateful to see the boys come back, safe and sound.
A few days later, Doris got surprising news from their landlord. He told Doris that their rent had been paid. “It’s incredible! Who paid our rent at all ” she asked in surprise. The landlord told her the truth. It turned out that Simon’s parents decided to do something in return for Buddy’s kindness. Informed of Buddy’s wish to help his grandma with the rent, they managed to fulfill it. At the news, Buddy shed tears of joy, feeling happy that he has made his grandma proud.
