My teacher, Mr. August J. Bachmann, was the most influential teacher I ever had.
I had gotten into trouble in his class: Another student had pushed me for fun, and I became angry and began to hit him. Mr. Bachmann stopped the fight, but instead of sending me to the office, he sat me down and asked a simple question, “Penna, why are you wasting your life Why aren’t you going to college ”
I didn’t know anything about colleges or scholarships. No one had ever considered that a fatherless boy from the poorest neighborhood had a future. That day, instead of rushing off for lunch, he stayed and explained possible education options to me. At the end of our talk, he sent me to see a secretary who had a child at a state college. This was in 1962 at Emerson High School in Union City, New Jersey.
Well, 55 years have passed, and what have I done with the knowledge he gave me I gained a PhD from Fordham University when I was only 29.I taught English and social studies and then moved up the chain of command from teacher to principal(校长).
I’ve sat on the board for Magnet Schools of America and represented that organization at the United Nations. I’ve won a number of great educational awards. But where would I be if a truly caring teacher had not taken the time out of his lunch period to speak to me It was without question only his confidence in me that helped me forward.
I have repaid his kindness hundreds of times by encouraging misguided youngsters to aim higher. If I have saved any children, it is because of him. If I have been a successful educator, it is because I had a great role model in Mr. Bachmann.

Some high school students think it useless to receive higher education. Therefore, they choose not to go to college. If you’re one of them, think again. Here are some reasons why you should go to college and receive a good education there.
Schools and universities are the first places to get knowledge. We take that knowledge later on to build our careers after graduation. More knowledge will be gained after you start working, but without education, that job will not be within easy reach. Knowledge leads to knowledge.
While limited within the walls of the educational places, we openly explore other cultures of the world! We come to know that ours is not the only culture. Other cultures have valuable things to share, enriching our own. Education also makes us want to travel and exchange with various cultures, getting more experience.
When there’s a recession in the economy(经济), those who attended college will be more likely to find a new job than those who only finished high school and have a limited skills set. The more education you have, the more chances you will get to improve the quality of your life as you have a better job and earn a higher salary.
When you’re skillful and knowledgeable, you gain access(见到获接近...的机会)to people of similar backgrounds and tastes. It means a good education leads to excellent networking. Good networking can benefit you a lot in your later life.
A good education makes you a more interesting person. You can talk about ideas and events instead of just other people and what’s on sale in stores. An educated person doesn’t gossip(说闲话), having a preference to discuss ideas and listen to what other people have to say.
8.What can we learn about college education from Paragraph 2

10.How can one benefit from a good education
A.You can gossip about others’ affairs.
B.You are likely to study well at school.
C.You can work well with your coworkers.
D.You get to know excellent people with similar interests.
11.What is the main idea of the passage
A.The benefits of attending college. B.The exchange with other cultures.
C.The access to good networking. D.The ways of college education.

Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock, a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers. The students start worrying about the results. And when they worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources(资源).
Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short maths tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12% worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%. Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+, compared to a B-for those who did not.
“What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious, who’ d done our writing intervention(干 预 ), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don’t normally get nervous in these tests.”
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.
12.What may the students start worrying about before an exam
A.Whether they can pass the exams.
B.What other students do during the test.
C.Whether they have remembered the materials.
D.What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper.
13.What is the solution developed by the two researchers
A.Asking the students to focus on the test.
B.Asking the students to think nothing of the test.
C.Asking the students to sit quietly before the test.
D.Asking the students to write about their worries before the test.
14.According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test _________.
A.became less nervous before the test.
B.did worse than those who wrote about their feelings.
C.were better at controlling their feelings.
D.did better than those who took two tests.
15.What can be learned from the last paragraph
A.Writing about worries before an exam can work a bit.
B.Studying in the library can improve students’ performance.
C.It doesn’t matter where to write about worries before an exam.
D.Students can only write about worries right before an exam.

Apologizing is how we live in peace with others, yet few of us know how to do it well— and not defensively. Just as often, apologies don’t happen at all out of fear that they’ll be uncomfortable or ineffective. 16 They help solidify(使变稳固)relationships and mend trust, both of which can lower stress and improve mental health. If you’re ready for your fault, here are four keys to apologizing well.
17
Apologies are better late than early, says Cindy Hantz, a social psychologist who has researched how timing influences apology effectiveness. “What we found is that people usually tend to offer an apology as soon as possible,” she says. “It’s an effort to shut the whole incident down. You can’t deliver an effective apology until the injured person believes that you fully understand what you did wrong. If the apology comes before that, it’s not going to be seen as sincere.”
Accept responsibility.
Why should you apologize if you’ re both at fault 18 “But I would like to encourage people to really focus on taking responsibility for the parts of the conflict that they’re responsible for.” Schumann says. Calling attention to the fact that we’re also hurt is normal, but save it for later on in the conversation.
Be clear about how you plan to repair things.
One of the core elements of an apology is making reparations. That will be possible in a direct way: You broke their favorite wineglass Buy them a new one. Spilled coffee on their new dress Pay for the dry cleaning. 19 It’s important for the other person to hear that this is not going to continue... and they can trust you to improve your behavior in the future.
Don’t expect forgiveness.
An apology is a starting point. Particularly with severe faults, the person wronged will often need time and space to heal. Schumann suggests saying like this: “I understand this isn’t going to fix everything, and I want to continue to do whatever I can to make up for my mistake. I hope that even if you’re not ready to forgive me, 20 ”
A.Don’t rush into it.
B.Start with specific words.
C.it’s important not to pressure them.
D.That’s exactly the problem many people struggle with.
E.you’re open to working with me to get us to a point where we can move forward.
F.But sincere apologies bring a host of benefits to the person delivering the message and the one receiving it.
G.Sometimes you can’t repair what’s happened, but you can think about the relationship moving forward.
