In the southwest of London, in Richmond, Lola Anderson began her rowing victory of Heather Stanning and Helen Glover in the women's pair at the London 2012Olympics. Inspired, she penned in her diary with a pink highlighter:“My name is Lola Anderson, and my biggest dream is to compete in the Olympics in rowing, and if possible, win gold.”
After completing her English studies at Newcastle University, she won a gold medal in the quadruple sculls at the World Rowing Championships in 2023, followed by another victory at the European Championships that year. In July, alongside Georgie Brayshaw, Hannah Scott, and Lauren Henry, she rowed to victory in the Paris Olympic final.
In the competition, a mere 0.15 second separated her team from the Dutch boat at the finish line in Paris. They had been leading Anderson throughout the race until that last moment. Gasping for breath and nearly in shock, she was then overwhelmed by a surge of emotion. Her teammate, Hannah Scott, leaned forward to hug her from behind, saying,“Your father would have been so proud of what you've achieved." It was then that Anderson began to cry, unable to stop. Her father, Don, had passed away five years before from cancer, but he had always been her strong supporter.
Unknown to her, her father kept the note and returned it to her seven years later, just two months before he passed away. He told her it served as a reminder that even when you doubt yourself, your loved ones will always have faith in you. His words encouraged her through difficulties in the years that followed.
That treasured piece of paper, as an important reminder, now lies in a tin box in her bedroom, alongside a couple of her rowing medals. "The tin is one of the first things I see when I wake up at 6 am. I know my father would be so proud of what I've achieved,"she recalled.

Plants are nature's superheroes in the battle against climate change. They're like a team of eco-protectors, using their superpower of photosynthesis(光合作用)to take in carbon dlioxide from the air. This process not only helps them grow but also reduces the amount of this greenhouse gas in our atmosphere(大气层),which is a major cause of global warming. It's like they're on the road to clean up our planet.
But, just like any superhero, plants have their limits. There's a point where they might not be able to absorb(吸收)any more carbon dioxide, and that's a big worry for scientists. They're racing against time to figure out when we might hit that limit.
Since the Industrial Revolution, human activities have caused a rapid increase in atmospheric carbon. Researchers, using computer models, have found that photosynthesis has increased by 30 percent."It's a positive development among the challenges of climate change," explains Lucas Cernusak, an ecophysiologist from James Cook University in Australia. Cernusak and his team did a research on data from a 2017 study that measured carbonyl sulfide(羰基硫)in ice and air. Plants absorb carbonyl sulfide as part of their natural cycle, alongside carbon dioxide, and this is often used to measure global photosynthesis.
As atmospheric CO2 levels continue to rise, it's thought that plants will eventually reach their absorption limitation. "If more CO2 remains in the atmosphere, concentrations will rise, increasing climate change," warns Danielle Way,an ecophysiologist from Western University.
And it's not just about the plants. What we do on the ground matters too.Cutting down forests to make way for farms and burning fossil fuels like oil and coal are messing with the carbon cycle. It's like we're adding more ingredients to a soup that's already too rich.
Plants are our friends in the fight against climate change, but they can't do it alone. We need to understand their limits and work with them, not against them.
28.What is the main role of plants in the atmosphere
A.Producing greenhouse gas. B.Growing up by themselves.
C.Broadening photosynthesis. D.Absorbing carbon dioxide.
C.A cause of climate change. D.An extra product of industrialization.

A.Plants solve climate change. B.Human actions are harmless.
C.Work with nature's limits. D.Climate change is changeable.

Cleaning up abandoned lots(废弃草坪)and creating community gardens doesn't just make a neighborhood feel safer-a growing body of evidence shows they really become safer.
That was about ten years ago, when Flint was known for its high rate of violent crime(犯罪). In 2012, according to FBI data, 2,774 violent crimes were reported to the Flint Police Department. In 2022, 985 were reported. But now, through the Genesee County Land Bank's Clean & Green program, Ishmel and hundreds of other residents have been mowing(修剪)vacant lots, leading to its decreasing crime. Like other "legacy cities" that have experienced significant economic fall and population loss, Flint is still struggling. Greening projects like these maintain(维护)abandoned spaces, either by mowing them or changing them into gardens and parks.“When we take care of our neighborhood, it makes us feel a little bit safer," Ishmel says.
But these projects don't just make the neighborhood feel safer. Researchers who have been studying the effects of greening in Flint, Philadelphia, Youngstown, and other legacy cities have shown repeatedly that it actually reduces violent crime. And in Flint, Zimmerman and his colleagues compared streets where community members maintained vacant lots through Clean & Green with streets where vacant lots were left alone, over five years. The maintained ones had almost 40 percent fewer attacks and violent crimes. Another study showed that divisions of neighborhoods with maintained lawns had lower rates of child maltreatment(虐待).
④These studies measure the decrease in crime, but it's more difficult to exactly explain why crime rates are decreasing. Zimmerman points tothe “broken windows”and "busy streets" theories. The idea is that one broken window sends a message "that nobody's watching, that you can get away with things, and you can do nefarious activities, and nobody cares," he explains. "Busy streets" is the opposite: It says calling on citizens to better neighborhoods will help develop a strong sense of community.
“From our research, it helps people feel better about each other, about themselves, about their neighborhood, about their community, about their street,”Zimmerman says. And it says to people who might commit crimes "that people are paying attention and care about this place."
What do the numbers in paragraph 2 indicate
A.FBI's efforts. B.The decrease in crime.
C.The city's falling. D.The situation of lots.
33.What is the effect of the project mentioned in the passage
A.The vacant lots in Flint was ignored all the time.
B.Flint's population has become smaller than before.
C.The project has improved people's sense of safety.
D.The project has only adjusted parent-child relationship.
34.What does the underlined word "nefarious" in paragraph 4 mean
A.Bad. B.Suitable. C.Awkward. D.Adventurous.
35.What might be the author's attitude towards the project in Flint
A.Negative. B.Unconcerned. C.Doubtful. D.Positive.

The year I entered 3rd grade, my parents' farm experienced a great drought that dried up the entire Midwest. My father's crop could not get enough water and died. With no crop to sell, there was no money. With no money, there was no food. We were a family of six. I was very hungry for quite some time.
My father grew worried and silent, my mother sad and angry. Though it would be many painful years before they would finally break up, the drought years were the worst because the farmhouse seemed to be waiting for something-thunder,lightning, heavy rain, a big fight, something to happen.
As kids do, I soldiered on, not having words or systems to manage anything otherwise. My sisters reacted similarly. We did not discuss it. At the dinner table, we had my mother's home-canned green beans quietly, accompanied with apples. When school started, I packed three apples for lunch every day, because there were plenty in the basement: towers of boxes full of apples, bought at the Bargain Bin for a song.Kids mnade fun of me in the cafeteria, and I shouted at them: “Shut up. It's just that I love apples."
Early in November, my teacher Miss Troutman pulled me aside secretly. She gave me two gifts. The first was a ham sandwich. The second was a journal book.
I don't know how she knew my situation. Perhaps it was my bony legs and dirty,too-short jeans. Perhaps she saw the apples. Maybe she just guessed. Regardless, she found a way to help me without hurting me or making me talk about my breaking heart. She offered dignity and kindness, making me filled with gratitude now.“Silly me,”she said."I accidentally made an extra sandwich this mnorning. Could you do me a favor to have this extra one ”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右。
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
With it,she handed me a beautiful black leather journal book.
Miss Troutman made many accidental sandwiches that year.
