A call came into Jimmy Gilleece's bar. A newly married woman, who had spent the afternoon at his bar, couldn't find her wallet. She didn't care about her ID, credit cards, or 150 in cash-but her wedding ring was inside.
Gilleece, 42, didn't like the idea that a theft could have happened at his place. So he determined to find the wallet. He spent hours on videos from surveillance (监控) cameras, watching the woman's every step in the bar. Within minutes, a young man entered the bar, put something in his pocket, and walked off.
Gilleece posted a clip (视频片段) on the bar's Facebook page to find out who the young man was. Within hours, Gilleece got a text from 17-year-old Rivers Prather, who said he'd done it because he hadn't eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but thought it was not real, so he took the money and threw the wallet into the ocean. Then he bought a sandwich.
Gilleece told the teen to meet him at the docks (码头). There they talked a lot and Gilleece knew that Prather was from a poor family. Seeing the teenager's small build, Gilleece thought he was more of a kid than a criminal. However, because of the missing ring, Prather could be put into prison.
Gilleece decided to help the kid. He hired two local divers to search the waters where the wallet had been thrown. More than an hour passed, with no sign of the ring. Gilleece grew worried. And then a diver popped up. In his hand was the wallet, and inside was the ring. When Gilleece called the wallet's owner, she burst into tears and immediately dropped the charge (指控) against Prather for stealing the ring.
24. What did the woman value most in her wallet
A. Her ID. B. Her credit cards. C. Her money. D. Her wedding ring.

A. He would not be sent to prison. B. He would be charged by the woman.
C. He would get a job in Gilleece's bar. D He would live a better life ever after.

You may not know a lot of people when you start high school. Even if you know some freshmen (新生) , you still feel nervous that you don't know any senior students or teachers. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces
Most high schools hold a freshman orientation before school actually starts, which is helpful not only because you can know your way around the building and get to meet some of your teachers, but also because you get to meet fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces. When you talk to your new classmates, you'll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They' re all new to the school and don't know what to expect. Talking about a common worry with them can help you develop friendships.
The work in high school is something that freshmen are possibly worried about. The work in high school builds on what you learnt in middle school, giving you a more advanced knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it's a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you help.
High school also has more extracurricular activities than middle school does such as clubs, music and theatre groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.
High school gives you the chance to learn how to manage your time, to develop your social skills and interests, and more importantly to be more independent and responsible.

30. Extracurricular activities mainly help students _________.

Most 15-year-olds are worrying about their math homework and trying to fit in with other kids their age. But Henry Patterson is busy running a successful online business instead.
Patterson, a teenager from Bedfordshire, a county in the East of England, started a business called Not Before Tea when he was just nine. He began by selling sweets, but soon turned to household products like wash bags and soft toys. The items he sells came from the characters of a book he wrote called The Adventures of Sherb and Pip.
Patterson's early school years were difficult, as he didn't do as his peers did. He saw the world differently and was rarely invited to parties or play dates. He also spoke with difficulty, which made him feel even more lonely.
But these things didn't hold him back. To cheer himself up, Patterson gradually buried himself in designing different animals and writing interesting stories about them. His characters started to become popular. He tried very hard to express himself and talk to bigger audiences. His business has earned him 65,000 pounds (566,221 yuan) and he has spoken at the National Retail Business Awards for Teenagers.
Besides this, he does his best to keep his schoolwork as a priority (优先项). He takes his homework with him to events and does it on the train or after a presentation. Two years ago, he wrote a book called Young and Mighty. It describes his search for success and happiness. “The real point of the book is to help people my age think about how to make their way in the world,” he wrote.
