Fifteen years ago, I loved going to the gym, but family life and work commitments meant I was finding it hard to get there. With the help of my dad and uncle, I built my own gym in the garden. It’s basically a beautiful room with insulation (隔热) and electric (供电) and a small heater for the winter. We built a corner desk too, which was intended for my doing the paperwork for my small business. However, the desk served its real purpose when I started my writing journey two years ago.
I’ve always had stories going through my mind. I could be out jogging and I’d lose myself in thoughts in my head like movie scenes. Once seen, they stay in there. I have trouble keeping other kinds of information, but when it comes to story ideas, they can be memorized by me. I have many fresh ideas in my head waiting to be written. When I was younger, I wasn’t brave enough to write. I didn’t do well in school and I’ve spent most of my life in physical work, so the idea of becoming a writer felt laughable.
I now know there isn’t a writer type; writers come in all forms. I still use the gym for its real purpose, but some of the equipment has been replaced by books and a small bed for the time when I want to relax and read. I like to have my desk looking colorful—some might say messy. My love for sport is clear to see, with photos around of my favorite boxers and the football team I follow. On the other hand, having my own writing room is important. Without it, I wouldn’t be where I am now on my writing journey. It’s far from charming, but it is mine. It’s my happy place.
24.Who helped the author build the gym
A.His coach and cousin. B.His father and uncle.
C.His friend and neighbour. D.His workmate and brother.
25.What can we learn about the author from paragraph 2
A.He got on well with his study at school.
B.He wrote a number of stories as a child.
C.He has a lot in his head waiting to be written.
D.He is good at remembering all sorts of information.
26.What sports team is the author a fan of
A.A baseball team. B.A volleyball team. C.A basketball team. D.A football team.
27.What is the author’s gym mainly used for now
A.Writing and fitness. B.Teaching and office work.
C.Storing clothes and sleeping. D.Relaxation and entertainment.

Insect numbers have dropped by half in some parts of the world due to climate change and intensive agriculture, a study has found. Preserving habitats (栖息地) for nature could help ensure vital insects thrive (兴旺).
Lead researcher, Dr. Charlie Outhwaite, said losing insect populations could be harmful not only to the natural environment, but also to human health and food security, particularly with loss of pollinators (传粉者). “Our findings highlight the urgency of actions to preserve natural habitats, slow the expansion of high-intensity agriculture, and cut emissions to reduce climate change,” she added.
In the latest study, the researchers pulled together data on the range and number of nearly 20,000 insect species, including bees, ants, butterflies, grasshoppers and dragonflies, at about 6,000 different locations. In areas with high-intensity agriculture and significant warming, insect numbers have dropped by 49% and the number of different species by 27%, compared with relatively untouched places that have so far avoided the severest effects of climate change, according to the research, published in Nature.
But the researchers said that setting aside areas of land for nature could create a place for insects, which need shade to survive in hot weather. “Careful management of agricultural areas, such as preserving natural habitats near farmland, may help ensure that vital insects can still thrive,” said Dr. Tim Newbold.
Study researcher Peter McCann added, “We need to acknowledge how important insects are for the environment as a whole, and for human health and well-being, in order to address the threats we pose to them before many species are lost forever.”
28.What has caused the fall of insect numbers
A.Climate change and farming. B.Planting more and more trees.
C.Growing more and more grass. D.People’s hunting insects thoughtlessly.
29.How could losing insect populations have a bad influence
①Being bad for people’s health ②Being harmful to industrial products
③Having a bad effect on food security ④Doing harm to the natural environment
⑤Having a bad influence on water quality
A.②④⑤ B.③④⑤ C.①②③ D.①③④
30.What is the main idea of Paragraph 3
A.The results of the study. B.The problems with the study.
C.What influences insects may have. D.What kinds of insects were included.
31.Why should areas of land for nature be set aside according to Dr. Tim Newbold
A.To supply fresh air. B.To provide shade. C.To provide earth. D.To supply energy.

Khamlova also said many young people in Russia hope to study at Chinese universities.
Meanwhile, the Russian-Chinese International School will be open in Moscow this autumn. The school is now recruiting (招聘) teachers and has received numerous inquiries from Russian parents eager for their children to master the Chinese language.

As you get older, you’ll meet a wider range of people from diverse cultures. 36 if you haven’t met many people from different backgrounds. Here are some tips for learning more about them and about yourself.
Know your own culture
One of the best ways to understand other people’s cultures is to first consider your own. 37 . Don’t think of your own way of life as the only normal one and everyone else’s to be strange. Otherwise, it’s hard to approach those differences with respect.
38
Maybe you’ve recently met someone from a different culture, or you’re curious about how differently people live. When you meet people from a different culture, ask them about their lives. Also, you can read books, watch movies or listen to radio shows. 39 . The more you learn, the more likely you will get used to greeting cultural differences with curiosity rather than doubt.
Appreciate the differences
Differences between us are what make life so interesting, so just accept the differences between yourself and your friends from different cultures. The best way to respect people from other cultures is to strike a balance between curiosity and appreciation: Ask questions if your friends are open to them. 40 .
A.Pay a visit to your hometown
B.Learn about a different culture
C.When in Rome, do as the Romans do
D.It can be hard to know how to respect their cultures
E.These will help you get an insider’s view on a different culture

I finally climbed into bed at 1:20 in the morning. My friends had helped me celebrate my 31st birthday in the basement apartment 56 I owned.
Earlier in the day I had prepared for the unlikely event of a flood. We are about a third of a mile from the banks of the Ahr River. It had been raining very hard that week and the government had sent out a flood warning, though not for where I was. Still, I’d placed sandbags on the floor outside my garden door and put electronic products on the tables. “Silly man!” My friends, who came to see me now 57 then, laughed at me for doing that, but I thought I should not postpone 58 (make) preparations for a flood. They made an 59 (assume) that there would be no flood in the section.
As I was falling asleep, I was awakened by the sound of rushing water. I began to panic and feel rather 60 (anxiety) though I tried to calm 61 . I knew I had to get out fast! Without wearing my shoes, I 62 (struggle) to walk toward the door that led upstairs to the main floor. Finally I made it to the door and tried several times to pull it open even just a little bit, but the rushing water shut it again. I could turn 63 nobody for help. I looked around for anything that I could use to keep it open. There in the corner was a coat rack (衣帽架). I took it and, once again, opened the door, throwing the coat rack between the door and the frame (门框) to keep the door from shutting. That enabled me 64 (get) out of the basement.
I jumped onto the stairs and ran outside. I stood there in the darkness, wet through. The street scenes were completely different. The neighborhood was 65 (visible) flooded with water!

We’ve all heard the stories of an actor’s struggles before a career breakthrough (突破): living a hard life, working part-time and training hard 66 getting that major role. Shelby, the star of “A Dog’s Way Home,” has a hard-luck story that could top them all. She was once living in a landfill (垃圾填埋场), expecting to find a good meal.
Shelby’s big break came in April 2017, when animal-control officer Megan Buhler was driving in Cheatham County. Tennessee. On the way, Buhler saw and 67 what she recalled was an obviously scared puppy, appearing from the dump (垃圾堆). “I knelt down and just said, ‘Oh, come here, baby,’” said Buhler. “She seemed quite 68 something or somebody, but she came right up to me, and I was able to put her in my truck.” The pair 69 the county animal shelter, where the staff began calling the new resident Baby Girl.
Buhler and others didn’t know that 3,200 kilometers away, Hollywood 70 a dog to play Bella in a film written by Cathryn Michon. The find-a-Bella job went to trainer Teresa Ann Miller. Her task was 71 shelters nationwide for a dog that could play Bella. One day, Miller saw Baby Girl’s photo. “She was smiling happily and 72 , it was a really good picture,” Miller said. Then she met Baby Girl, and assessed (评估) her 73 to respond to simple commands. After assessment, she adopted Baby Girl from the shelter, renamed her Shelby and took her to California 74 she could receive training. Miller and Shelby trained for just over three months before filming began.
Most of the film’s reviews have praised Shelby’s performance. Many viewers made the comments like “a very cute dog, perfect performance!”
Shelby has come 75 from the dump. But Buhler said she saw Shelby recently. She just needed only a second to compare the movie star with the dog she found from the piles of trash. “She’s exactly the same,” Buhler said.
