A boa swallowing an animal

The inside of the boa constrictor

Once when I was six years old
I saw a magnificent picture in a
book, called True Stories from
Nature, about the primeval forest.
It was a picture of a boa constrictor
in the act of swallowing an animal.
Here is a copy of the drawing.
1
In the book it said: “Boa
constrictors swallow their prey
whole, without chewing it. After
that they are not able to move, and
they sleep through the six months
that they need for digestion.”
2
I pondered deeply, then, over the adventures of the jungle. And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing. My Drawing Number One. It looked like this:
3
I showed my masterpiece to the grown
-ups, and asked them whether the
drawing frightened them.
But they answered: “Frighten Why should anyone be frightened by a hat ”
4
5
My drawing was not a picture of a hat.
It was a picture of a boa constrictor
digesting an elephant. But since the
grown-ups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing: I drew the inside of the boa constrictor, so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to have things explained.
My Drawing Number Two looked like this:
6
The grown-ups' response, this time, was to advise me to lay aside my drawings of boa constrictors, whether from the inside or the outside, and devote myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic and grammar. That is why, at the age of six, I gave up what might have been a magnificent career as a painter. I had been disheartened by the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two. Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.
7
So then I chose another profession, and learned to pilot airplanes. I have flown a little over all parts of the world; and it is true that geography has been very useful to me. At a glance I can distinguish China from Arizona. If one gets lost in the night, such knowledge is valuable.
8
In the course of this life, I have had a great many encounters with a great
many people who have been concerned with matters of consequence. I have lived a great deal among grown-ups. I have seen them intimately, close at hand. And that hasn’t much improved my opinion of them.
9
Whenever I met one of them who seemed to me at all clear-sighted, I tried the experiment of showing him my Drawing Number One, which I have always kept. I would try to find out, so, if this was a person of true understanding. But, whoever it was, he, or she, would always say:
“That is a hat.”
10
11
Then I would never talk to that person about boa constrictors, or primeval forests, or stars. I would bring myself down to his level. I would talk to him about bridge, and golf, and politics, and neckties. And the grown-up would be greatly pleased to have met such a sensible man.
(Excerpt from The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry)

1 What does the author really mean by these sentences
Most of the grown-ups I have met are the same. They focus on practical matters only and seldom pay attention to imagination or creativity. If I pretend to think the way they do, the adults will conclude that I am sensible and mature.
Read the sentences from the passage and answer the questions.
4
2 What figure of speech does the author use How does this figure of speech help to express the author’s attitude
Irony. This figure of speech enables the author to indicate his low opinion of adults’ behaviour and values by stressing such things.
Read the sentences from the passage and answer the questions.
4
Learning to learn
Irony is a subtle figure of speech that refers to things one says that are the opposite of what one really means. It has a humorous, emphatic or sarcastic effect.
For example: Fine, don’t buy me an airline ticket. I’ll just swim across the ocean!
It must be delightful to find oneself in a foreign country without a penny in one’s pocket..

1 What were the grown-ups’ responses to the author’s Drawing Number One and Drawing Number Two Why do you think they responded in this way
They thought the author’s Drawing Number One was just about an ordinary hat.
When seeing the author’s Drawing Number Two, they advised the author to change his focus to other subjects such as geography, history, arithmetic and grammar.
Because they lack imagination and patience and just focus on the matters of consequence.
2 According to the author, what is a child’s most valuable trait

Imagination and genuineness.

3 After reading the two passages in this unit, think about what you may acquire and lose as you grow up. Share your ideas with the class.
After reading the two passages in this unit, I have learnt a lot. Being a child or an adult may have its own advantages and disadvantages. As far as I am concerned, being a child is much happier because I don’t take a lot of responsibilities, and I must be taken good care of by my parents, although I have to be supervised by them as well. Being an adult means I will be allowed to do a lot of things that I can’t when I was a child, while I must be mature and strong enough to take responsibilities.
Above all, I can acquire a lot; meanwhile, I may also lose something precious as I grow up. So I hope I will keep a childlike innocence deep in my heart.

It tells about the Cuban fisherman Santiago in eighty-four days with no fish caught. He finally caught a big marlin by himself. Comments:
"Man is not made for defeat. A man may be destroyed, but he cannot be defeated." This is Hemingway's dictum, is the eternal motto.Santiago in The Old Man and the Sea is the best interpreter of this golden saying.
Conclusion and recommendation:
In this simple story, there is an unyielding soul -- a poor Cuban fisherman -- Santiago, an unfortunate old man who interprets the image of "tough man" with his tragic experience.Poor and unlucky, his fate is sad, but he is also a failed hero, "undefeated loser".He is the symbol of the perfect person admired by Hemingway: strong, kind, generous, full of love. Even if he fails in the battle field of life, he is still mentally strong and a "tough man" in the face of irreversible fate.
