Absolute agony! 深陷痛苦!
Dear Agony Aunt,
This is the first time that I have turned to your online forums for help. My emotion is in a total mess—hope you can help me out!
Sadness. I’m crazy about badminton, and pretty good at it too, which is probably why I was so sad when I found out the truth that there’s no badminton court in my new school. Separated from beloved friends and families, I feel lost and helpless. If I had known in advance that I’m so unsatisfied with everything here, I wouldn’t have gone abroad for further study.
Fear. Worried about leaving others a bad impression, I am fearful of saying no to any request. For example, to complete his project that was due quickly, my deskmate asked to copy part of my article. I agreed even if I thought it’s better for him to do it by himself. Preferring to keep ideas to myself, I’m also frightened of taking the lead in group discussion.
Disgust. Some classmates’ heavy makeup and revealing clothing disgust me and give me pressure to look good. With bad performance in all subjects, they can’t do very well in exams and even only scored 60. Shocked by this, I can’t help looking down on them and have difficulties fitting in with them.
Anger. What made me most angry is that my soulmate should criticise me in front of others for telling white lies! Embarrassed and ashamed, I can’t concentrate on anything! Influenced mainly by this belief that friendship is more important than honesty, I praised his new haircut, despite secretly thinking that I can cut better.
Going back to my request, I was just wondering if you could help me prevent the situation from getting worse and work out all problems. Please help!

Our Agony Aunt answers your questions
Dear Li Hua,
Knowing you’re having a hard time adjusting to your new surroundings, I’ m writing to give you suggestions as to how to deal with the emotional complexity of growing up and settle down in new life. Here’s what you need to do.
First, don’t always complain about surroundings. Accepting sadness and tears as part of life, you should ensure that you pull your weight or do your duty. Moreover, the more independent your are, the better your life will be. Approached in this strategy, sadness will move apart from you.
Then, don’t be concerned about letting others down and make refusals when you can’t stand it. Say for example that suggest an alternative when invited to a boring boxing match. Here’s a quotation applying to everyday life, good fences make good neighbors.
Secondly, don’t judge someone by his appearance. It takes time to understand a person. About IQ (intelligence quotient) and EQ (emotional quotient) , it’s widely believed in American core value that the latter plays an even more important role than the former. So manage to take it easy and don’t be concerned about their academic performance.
Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, don’t let off steam. Filled with anger and embarrassment caused by criticizing , you tend to say whatever comes to your mind. Take a deep breath, calm down, and always remember: think first, speak later. And make frank comments instead of deceiving others with white lies, which is like weaving a tangled web.
In a word, as an old American saying goes, loose lips sink ships. Don’t justify your faults and say sorry when hurting others by accident. Don’t feel annoyed and try to forgive others when others apologize to you to resolve conflicts. Applying these tips to interpersonal relationships, you’re sure to get along well with everyone.
