What can you expect as a Ladder intern

If you are interested in working in a specific area and convey it in the application form, chances are that you'll get paired with a company that reflects these interests!
Regular meetings and discussion about deliverables: Throughout the 8-week internship, you will have a 45-minute meeting with your intern manager weekly. You will also discuss weekly deadlines and progress goals.
Consult your coach in the company, who will give you feedback on your work. At the Week 4 mark, you can show your first deliverable to the company, and at Week 8, you will present your final project to the company!

This summer, I marked what some call a “milestone birthday”. My approach to birthdays is usually twofold: fear them in advance and bear them in the moment. But this year, I decided to confront my birthday directly instead of tolerating it awkwardly. Rather than wait to receive cards and gifts, why not celebrate my birthday by giving presents to others Maybe turning tradition upside down would assuage my discomfort.
Science was on my side. Studies have found that spending money on others makes us happier than spending money on ourselves. “We observe this all over the world, even in places where people are struggling to meet their own basic needs. Charitable contributions activate the reward centres of our brain that spark for delights such as music and food,” Elizabeth Dunn, a University of British Columbia psychology professor told me.
Armed with these studies, I began planning my experiment. The gift had to be small enough to mail in an envelope and meaningful enough to touch hearts. I decided on pencils. I located a vendor（商贩）in Central California who could customize pencils. I ordered them in pink to honour my last name. And I engraved（雕刻）them with three messages about pencils that double as messages about life: Stay sharp. Get to the point. Erasing is creating.
With my wife, I turned our kitchen table into a fulfillment centre. We printed labels, slid three pencils into a sleeve and each sleeve into an envelope. Then, in two walks to our neighbourhood post office, we sent 98 gifts out to the world.
A few days later，I got texts and emails from the pencil recipients（收件者）.I heard from about three-fourths of them that they like the gift. Several people sent photos of their new pink pencils along with thanks or birthday wishes. A few told me how touched they were that I thought of them. One person texted fire and heart emojis.

Britain's only remaining coal power plant will generate electricity for the last time today, after operating for 57 years.
The power station at Ratcliffe in Nottingham shire will come to the end of its life in line with the government's policy to phase out coal power, which was first signalled almost a decade ago.
The closure marks the end of Britain's 142-year history of coal power use, which began when the world's first coal-fired power station, the Holborn Viaduct in central London, began generating electricity in 1882. The closure has been regarded as a big milestone in reducing the UK's carbon emissions.
The UK became the first country to set an end-date for coal power from 2025 after putting in place increasingly strict regulations to reduce the running hours of coal plants. Ministers called for the deadline to come forward by a year shortly before the UK hosted the UN's Cop26 climate talks in Glasgow in late 2021.
Peter O'Grady, the plant manager, said, “This whole year has been a series of sad moments. I'm sure there will be a few tears as the whole thing stops and as people leave, especially for me.”
The plant once employed 3,000 engineers but its workforce has declined in line with its power output over recent years. Coal power made up 80% of the UK's electricity in the early1980s, and 40% in 2014, which was due to costly carbon taxes and the rise of cheap renewables.
Staff were first told in 2021 that the plant would close in late 2022, but Ratcliffe's owner, the German energy company Uniper, reached an agreement with the government to keep the plant running during the Europe-wide gas crisis. Uniper has tried to help engineers into jobs at the company's other power plants or into training that could lead to work in other areas of the energy industry.
Michael Lewis, Uniper's chief executive, said, “This will be the first time since 1882 that coal has not powered Great Britain. We're embracing（拥抱）the future of cleaner and flexible energy.”

Hearing a song might bring to mind the last time we saw a live band perform it. We may remember hearing the song on a road trip with high school friends, and be brought back to the sights, smells, and feelings of that experience. All of these experiences have been referred to as “music-evoked（引起）thoughts＂， and recent research has sought to understand why certain thoughts occur in response to certain music.
In one study, my workmates and I compared thoughts evoked by instrumental excerpts（节选）of unfamiliar classical，electronic， and pop／rock music. Overall， listeners reported thoughts 76 percent of the time. However, the occurrence of thoughts varied across music types. Classical and electronic music evoked more thoughts than pop/rock music. This doesn't necessarily mean pop/rock music types are unengaging. Rather, types like classical and electronic music might provide greater visual mental imagery, whereas pop/rock music might invite listeners to engage in different ways, like dancing or singing along.
We also found links related to the contexts with which we associate music. Electronic music tended to evoke thoughts about clubbing and video games, pop/rock music evoked thoughts about live performances and driving, and classical music thoughts about movies and weddings. Classical music led listeners to great capability to imagine fictional stories, as it was often composed specifically with the aim of evoking an imagined story.
These contextual associations may vary across different cultures. A recent study revealed that fictional stories reported while enjoying classical music were highly similar in two groups of young adults in the US, but the stories generated by listeners in Germany in response to these same excerpts were significantly different. This suggests that even when asked to generate entirely fictional stories, listeners are influenced by their prior associations with music. This speaks to general theories that our memories play a substantial role in shaping imagination.
Understanding how different music evokes different thoughts is important for various practical uses. For instance， a doctor might aim to trigger（触发）specific types of thoughts via music when working with a client, or an artist might engage a more creative thinking mode by listening to a particular piece of music.

This summer, I marked what some call a “milestone birthday”. My approach to birthdays is usually twofold: fear them in advance and bear them in the moment. But this year, I decided to confront my birthday directly instead of tolerating it awkwardly. Britain's only remaining coal power plant will generate electricity for the last time today, after operating for 57 years.
The power station at Ratcliffe in Nottingham shire will come to the end of its life in line with the government's policy to phase out coal power, which was first signalled almost a decade ago.
The closure marks the end of Britain's 142-year history of coal power use, which began when the world's first coal-fired power station, the Holborn Viaduct in central London, began generating electricity in 1882. The closure has been regarded as a big milestone in reducing the UK's carbon emissions.
The UK became the first country to set an end-date for coal power from 2025 after putting in place increasingly strict regulations to reduce the running hours of coal plants. Ministers called for the deadline to come forward by a year shortly before the UK hosted the UN's Cop26 climate talks in Glasgow in late 2021.

We also found links related to the contexts with which we associate music. Electronic music tended to evoke thoughts about clubbing and video games, pop/rock music evoked thoughts about live performances and driving, and classical music thoughts about movies and weddings. Classical music led listeners to great capability to imagine fictional stories, as it was often composed specifically with the aim of evoking an imagined story.
These contextual associations may vary across different cultures. A recent study revealed that fictional stories reported while enjoying classical music were highly similar in two groups of young adults in the US, but the stories generated by listeners in Germany in response to these same excerpts were significantly different. This suggests that even when asked to generate entirely fictional stories, listeners are influenced by their prior associations with music.
