At a high school in Indiana, a group of students are working on ideas to deal with climate change. One student, Murphy, suggests a large container filled with water that would heat up and produce steam (蒸汽) to power a car. Although the idea has limitations, climate scientist Ben Kravitz appreciates it, saying that steam power, while old, still works.
Kravitz developed a lesson with Paul Goddard, a research scientist, and Kirstin Milks, a high school science teacher. The lesson encourages students to think creatively about reducing pollution and solving global warming. Milks believes it’s important for students to not only understand the dangers of climate change but also feel confident to come up with solutions. She says, “These students will lead the future climate work.”
The lesson covers the basics of climate change, explaining that burning coal, oil, and gas gives off carbon dioxide (CO2), the main cause of global warming. Kravitz stresses that reducing greenhouse gas emissions (is the only lasting solution, but new technologies, such as wind and solar energy, are needed to make progress.
In the meantime, Kravitz and other scientists are exploring ways, such as climate engineering, to reduce the planet’s temperature. Climate engineering includes techniques like reflecting sunlight back into space or removing CO2 from the atmosphere. However, these ways come with risks, such as changing weather systems and rainfall patterns, leading to loss of biodiversity and impacting agriculture. Students are encouraged to think about such challenges when developing their ideas.
Through this lesson, Milks hopes to develop in students both awareness and optimism (乐观), showing them that they can play a role in solving global issues.
24. What is Murphy’s idea
A. Design a special car. B. Power cars with steam.
C. Discover new energy. D. Make a drinking machine.
25. Why was this lesson developed
A. To equip students for climate action. B. To discuss the benefits of using solar energy.
C. To encourage students to stop using coal and gas. D. To explain climate change affects weather systems.
26. What can we know about climate engineering
A. It can absorb the sunlight. B. It can add CO2 to the atmosphere.
C. It may enrich the biodiversity. D. It may have effects on agriculture.
27. What is a suitable title for the passage
A. The challenges of climate engineering. B. Students’ contributions to steam power.
C. The development of climate-related technologies. D. Students’ creative ideas for a better climate future.

Have you ever been in a situation where you needed to do well but failed because of the pressure You’re not alone. Steven Chase, a scientist at Carnegie Mellon University, studied what could happen in the brain under pressure. The experiments show that pressure is linked to a drop in activity in the brain area that prepares for movement, just as athletes fail under stress.
The team first experimented with certain monkeys and set up a computer task for them. The monkeys moved a cursor (光标) on a screen to get rewards ranging from small to medium, large, or even a rare and big “jackpot” which was meant to create high-pressure situations, similar to what athletes face in critical moments. To see the changes in brain activity, the researchers put a small chip (芯片) into the monkeys’ motor cortex, the part of the brain that controls movement. During jackpot setting, the activity of the neurons (神经元) that help in movement planning decreased. This drop in such activity made the monkeys less prepared, leading to worse performance.
The study showed a complex relationship between rewards and performance. The team have found that while small rewards can improve performance, too many rewards can actually make it worse. This is known as the “neural-bias hypothesis,” which says that too much pressure can destroy the brain’s best function. The research also looked into why motor preparation decreased under high pressure. It suggested that as the reward got bigger, the brain’s activity reached a peak and then started to decline.
In conclusion, understanding why people and animals fail under pressure can help us develop better ways to manage stressful situations and perform better when it matters most.
28. Why was the “jackpot” reward used in the experiment
A. To create high-pressure situations. B. To train the problem-solving skills.
C. To improve monkeys’ intelligence. D. To provide extra food for monkeys.
29. How did the researchers measure brain activity in monkeys
A. By observing their hobbies. B. By using a chip put in the brain.
C. By giving them similar rewards. D. By monitoring their heart rate.
30. What does the “neural-bias hypothesis” suggest
A. Rewards hardly affect brain function. B. Monkeys perform better under no pressure.
C. Small rewards seldom improve performance. D. Too many rewards can cause bad performance.
31. What does the study focus on
A. Approaches to dealing with great stress. B. How rewards impact brain development.
C. Links of pressure to performance failure. D. How good athletes face their challenges.

There have been times in your life when you may have almost no social interaction (社交) Feeling lonely can be bad for your mental and physical health. 36 I’ve been using many of the methods described here to build a satisfying social life for myself.
Limit your social media usage
If meeting people in real life is like eating a healthy meal, social media is like snacking. 37 But you’ll still feel like something’s missing. Ask yourself whether time spent on social media is actually helping you to feel more connected, or whether it leaves you feeling worse. If it’s not helping, try limiting the time you spend looking at other people’s posts to 10 minutes per day. Doing so can reduce feelings of loneliness and depression.
38
To create a healthy and supportive social group, it’s important that you consider what you need. And think about whether the people you are spending time with meet your needs. Try describing what a close friendship group would look like to you. It’s rare that anyone will fit this description perfectly. But knowing what you value can make it easier to walk away from groups that are not a good fit for you.
Connect your interests with social groups
Your primary hobbies may not be things that you can share doing. 39 Artists, for example, may paint alone but can share their work and discuss art socially. Remember that most people want to have a social group that is similar to them in terms of values, beliefs, and preferences. If you find people who share your interests, they’re likely to be similar to you in other ways, too.
40 Every hour you spend interacting with people, you will become a little better at it.
A. Turn people you know into friends.
B. It’ll make you full enough to not want real food.
C. Ask yourself what type of friends you are looking for.
D. You can refer to the advice above when making friends.
E. Building up a social circle will always mean being refused.
F. But most activities have groups that share an interest in them.
G. Luckily, there are several ways for you to build up your social life.

As a doctor, I am also expert in communicating with patients. Patients trust me and would like to share their stories with me. Of course, I prefer to be their listeners, sharing their difficulty, worry, fear as well as struggle. I clearly remember an experience that began the journey of being a listener to my patients.
Ten years ago, I was a medical student in a university. It happened when I was busy gathering data (资料) for my graduation paper on The Most Important Communication Skills to Patients.
On a cold raining evening, I was in the ward (病房) searching for the final female patient, Mrs. Green, to complete my paper. Holding a patient questionnaire, I walked towards her room. I didn’t see any doctors or nurses; the ward was quiet. With the dim light, I could see heavy raindrops through the window.
She was lying on bed, still very weak, with no relatives around. I sat down on a chair next to her bed, and began to introduce myself politely. Luckily, she agreed with a nod. Soon she started talking about her story. She had three children in primary school, who were staying with a neighbour then. Her husband died a year ago and she was the only breadwinner of her family as a cleaner.
I had no idea how to comfort her. Looking into her eyes, I tried my best to remember the communication skills that I had learned earlier. But still my mind was blank. I regretted not paying more attention. I could do nothing but hold her hands, while listening to her quietly. Suddenly I realized she might not expect any reply from me. My listening alone was enough. Our conversation lasted for about 50 minutes. I could feel her difficulty, her worry, her fear as well as her struggle. Finally, she let go of my hand, with a sincere thank you. I stood up, covered her with a blanket, and waved goodbye.

Dear Mike,
I hope you’re doing well! There’s so much to share about my high school life I just started.
I’ve joined the school’s debate team and signed up for the basketball club, which has been a great way to make new friends. The classes are more challenging than before, especially math and chemistry. The teachers are very supportive, which helps a lot.
I feel that high school is both exciting and demanding. Through these experiences, I’ve learned the importance of balancing studies and after-school activities. It’s been a great start, and I’m looking forward to more adventures.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

参考范文
A few days later, I returned to see Mrs. Green. I found many positive changes on her. She became more willing to follow the treatment plan and more hopeful about getting better. She began to believe that she could overcome the illness with the right treatment and support, which made a big difference in her recovery process. This experience also changed me. It made me understand that listening was a powerful tool. In a world full of technology and rushed decisions, taking the time to listen can have a huge impact on a patient’s well-being. It teaches me that every patient has a story, and by listening to that story, we can provide better care and help them on their road to recovery.

Text 10
Can you remember any time when you were really mad, sad or shamed I certainly can. One was when I applied for a course I really wanted to do. I put a lot of effort into it. I spent a lot of time and energy, and then I was turned down. That was really bad for me and I was sad and angry. To make things worse, I had told all my friends that I would certainly be accepted for the course, so it was really difficult to tell them that I had been turned down. I tried to deal with it by making jokes about it and looking as if I didn’t care, but that just made me feel even worse. I didn’t know what to do. It wouldn’t be fair to shout at my family or hit things, although that was what I felt like doing. Finally, my dad said I should write down my feelings. That helped me a lot, but I don’t think it is the perfect solution. I think the best thing to do is to talk honestly to others about the way you feel.
