Imagine a child asking a chatbot or voice assistant whether Santa Claus is real. How should the Al reply, considering that some families would rather have a lie than the truth This is a dilemma in the scarcely studied field of robot deception (欺骗).
Two researchers from Georgia Tech, Kantwon Rogers and Reiden Webber, designed a driving simulation (模拟) experiment to explore how intentional robot deception influences the trust between humans and AI, and whether different kinds of apologies can help restore that trust.
In the simulation, participants were told to drive a “robot-assisted car” to the hospital to save a friend's life. Meanwhile, the AI assistant wrongly warned of police ahead and advised participants to stay within the speed limit. When they reached the hospital, participants were informed that there were no police, and they received one of five different text-based responses from the robot-three admitting the lie and two offering a simple apology without admitting it. The study aimed to figure out which type of apology was the most effective in restoring trust after the robot's lie.
The results of the experiment were astonishing.45% of the participants did not speed because they believed the robot knew more about the situation than they did, showing an overly trusting attitude towards AI. The results also suggested that although none of the apology types fully regained trust, the apology without admitting the lie was statistically more effective in restoring trust than the other responses.
The researchers' final goal is to create a robot system that can learn when and how to lie or apologize during human-AI interactions. But they admit that this is a complicated issue. “We still have very limited knowledge about AI deception, but we do know that lying isn't always bad, and telling the truth isn't always good,” Rogers said. “So how can we make laws that support new ideas without causing harm, while also keeping people safe ”
28. What is the aim of the experiment
A. To assess AI's intentional responses. B. To examine AI's learning capabilities.
C. To evaluate AI's assistance on driving. D. To study AI deception's impact on trust.
29. Which response from AI is the most effective in repairing trust in the experiment
A. “I am sorry.” B. “You' re at your destination.”
C. “I lied to you.” D. “Forgive me for my fault.”
30. What might Rogers advise AI law makers to do
A. Balance innovation and users' safety. B. Prioritize protection of users' privacy.
C. Promote moral behavior in AI systems. D. Enforce clearer and stricter regulations.
31. Where can the text be found
A. In a history book. B. In a novel. C. In a science magazine. D. In a biography.
D
As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. “While it may sound like good advice, it's not the best or fastest path because practice can only get you so far”, says Scott Young, author of Get Better al Anything: 12 Maxims for Mastery.
“Practice is not a cure-all,” Young explains. “It doesn't necessarily improve your skills but rather makes them more automatic and fluent.” In his book, Young clarifies this concept with the game Tetris, where players fit falling blocks to complete lines. The more you practice, the faster and more accurate you become at placing the blocks. However, simply practicing doesn't guarantee higher scores. To reach higher proficiency (精通度), one must go beyond repetitive practice and use the correct techniques.
Young said, “It's important to do the correct technique from the beginning. That's why piano teachers and tennis coaches prefer to train someone who has had no experience rather than someone who has had a lot of experience. By starting with the correct techniques, beginners can grasp skills more quickly. Without established habits to break, they are more likely to build a strong base for long-term improvement.”
Malcolm Gladwell popularized the 10,000-hour rule in his book Outliers: The Story of Success, suggesting that proficiency in any field requires about 10,000 hours of practice. Yet Anders Ericsson, whose research was a big inspiration for this concept, disagreed. He argued for the idea of deliberate practice, which was not just practice but practice under the guidance with immediate feedback (反馈) about your performance. He stressed that learning from outcomes through corrective feedback is essential for developing true proficiency, otherwise you just spend time getting fluency and confidence.
Getting high-quality feedback will depend on how you ask for it. Simply asking someone, “What do you think ” is not enough. “There's just no way in our social network that someone could give you really harsh feedback and not cause harm to the relationship,” Young says. Instead, he suggests asking, “If you were going to make this better, what would you do ” By asking how to improve it, we shift the focus from judgment to practical steps for addressing any concerns.
32. What statement may Scott Young agree
A. Achieving high scores requires consistent practice.
B. The key to reaching fluency is to practice regularly.
C. Success cannot be guaranteed by using correct techniques.
D. Practice doesn't necessarily contribute to high proficiency.
33. What can be concluded by the words of Young in Paragraph 3
A. The methods of breaking established habits in practice.
B. The importance of practise to form good habits.
C. The advantage of beginners in grasping correct techniques.
D. The difficulty of experienced learners in mastering new skills.
34. What does Anders Ericsson advocate
A. Practicing with effective guidance. B. Increasing the frequency of practice.
C. Enhancing the fluency of performance. D. Building confidence from good feedback.
35. Which question may help get high-quality feedback
A. Is it good or bad B. Do you like it or not
C. What do you think of it D. What can I do to improve it

However, Mary had a special challenge— she couldn't hear anything like others could. But that didn't discourage her from pursuing her passion for dance.
Mary was determined to become the best dancer she could be. She joined the famous Harmony Dance Academy, a place where her dreams could take flight. Her mentor, a patient and graceful woman called Miss Clara, was always there to guide her and help her improve her techniques. Despite her difficulty with hearing, Mary poured her heart and soul into every graceful movement.
As the time for the annual talent show approached, Mary felt a mix of excitement and doubt. How would she be able to dance in sync without hearing the music fully Fear crept into her mind, making her consider giving up and not participating in the show. This kind of thought troubled her for a long time.
But Miss Clara saw the struggle within Mary and decided to help her overcome this hurdle. Together, they came up with a routine that celebrated Mary's ability to feel the rhythm deep within her. They worked tirelessly, practicing and perfecting each step.
The night of the talent show arrived, and the stage was filled with anticipation. Mary took a deep breath and attempted to embrace the challenge ahead. As the music started to play, she closed her eyes and let her other senses guide her. She could feel the vibrations in her body, as if the music was alive within her.
Mary danced with passion, communicating her emotions through her graceful movements. Each leap, twirl, and extension told a story of resilience and determination. Boys and girls! It's such an honor to share my English learning experience with you.
Without doubt, I am thrilled and delighted about my excellent English, which mainly results from my diligence. First of all, reading, listening and reciting on a daily basis are a must in learning English, which will contribute to our language sense. Additionally, what is equally important is that we should endeavor to use the English as often as possible, since it will deepen our familiarity and understanding. For instance, we can keep an English diary or leave an English note.
Such is my opinion concerning learning English efficiently. I would appreciate it if you could find my views beneficial. Thank you for your listening.
