Harry looked at the black alleyway. If only it would move, then he’d know whether it was just a lost cat or — something else. “Lumos,” Harry said, and a light appeared at the end of his wand (魔杖). He held it high over his head, and the pebble-dashed walls suddenly sparkled; the garage door shone, and between them Harry saw, quite distinctly, the giant outline of something very big, with wide, twinkling eyes.
Harry stepped backward. His legs hit his trunk and he tripped. His wand flew out of his hand as he cast out an arm to break his fall, and he landed, hard, in the gutter (阴沟)— There was a deafening BANG, and Harry threw up his hands to protect his eyes against a sudden blinding light — With a yell, he rolled back onto the sidewalk, just in time. A second later, a gigantic pair of wheels and headlights screamed to a stop exactly where Harry had just been lying. They belonged, as Harry saw when he raised his head, to a triple-decker (三层), violently purple bus. which had appeared out of thin air. Gold lettering over the bus spelled The Knight Bus.
For a second, Harry wondered if he had been knocked silly by his fall. Then a conductor in a purple uniform leapt out of the bus and began to speak loudly to the night.
“Welcome to the Knight Bus, emergency transport for the isolated witch or wizard (巫师). Just stick out your wand hand, step on board, and we can take you anywhere you want to go. My name is Stan Shunpike, and I will be your conductor this eve.”

Plants may tell us when they’re in trouble. Thirsty tomato and tobacco plants make clicking sounds, researchers have found. The sounds are ultrasonic (超声波的), meaning they are too high-pitched for human ears to hear. But when the sounds are transformed to lower pitches, they sound like popping bubbles (爆破的泡泡). Plants also make clicks when their stems (茎) are cut.
“It’s not like the plants are screaming.” says Lilach Hadany, an evolutionary biologist working at Tel Aviv University in Israel. “Plants may not mean to make these noises. We’ve shown only that plants create informative sounds.”
Hadany and her colleagues first heard the clicks when they set microphones next to plants on tables in a lab. The microphones caught some noises. But the researchers needed to make sure that the clicking was coming from the plants. So, the scientists placed plants inside soundproof boxes in the basement, far from the noise of the lab. There, microphones picked up ultrasonic pops from thirsty tomato plants. Though it was outside humans’ hearing range, the clicking made by plants was about as loud as a normal conversation.
Cut tomato plants and dry or cut tobacco plants clicked too. But plants that had enough water or hadn’t been cut stayed mostly quiet. Wheat, corn and grapevines also made sounds when stressed out. ______
The researchers don’t yet know why plants click. Bubbles forming and then popping inside plant tissues that transport water might make the noises. But however they happen, pops from crops could help farmers, the researchers suggest. Microphones, for example, could monitor fields or greenhouses to detect when plants need, to be irrigated (灌溉)
Hadany wonders whether other plants and insects already tune into plant pops. Other studies have suggested that plants respond to sounds. And animals from pests (害虫), moths to mice can hear in the range of the ultrasonic clicks. Sounds made by plants could be heard from around five meters away. Hadany’s team is now studying what the living things near the plants will do after hearing the sounds.
28. What can be learned from the first paragraph
A. Plants can make pop ping bubbles.
B. Plants sound when communicating.
C. Humans can’t hear the sounds made by plants.
D. Stems of plants make clicking sounds for help.
29. What may Lilach Hadany agree with
A. Plants may even scream when stressed out.
B. Plants can communicate their feelings to humans.
C. Plants may send certain messages by making sounds.
D. The sounds received from the lab were surely from plants.
30. In what way can microphones be used to benefit plants
A. Temperature monitoring. B. Timely irrigation.
C. Grass prevention. D. Pest control.
31. What is the purpose of the passage
A. To call on us to protect plants.
B. To stress the importance of plants’ making sounds.
C. To inform us of the secret of plants’ making sounds.
D. To warn us against the dangers the sounds of plants might cause.

American users of the popular video sharing service TikTok are preparing for a possible ban (禁令) of the app by the US government. US lawmakers have warned the Chinese-owned TikTok could be misusing users’ information. A TikTok spokesperson said in a statement, “TikTok US user data is stored in the US, with strict controls on employee access. TikTok’s biggest investors come from the US. We are committed to protecting our users’ privacy and safety as we continue working to bring joy to families and meaningful careers to those who create on our platform.”
The platform lets users create and share very short videos and provides helpful tools to do so. Videos often include popular songs from well-known artists and TikTok has helped launch the careers of new Internet and music stars.
News of the possible ban spread quickly among TikTok users.
One of those users is Ty Gibson of Greensboro, North Carolina. Gibson said at first, he dismissed the reports suggesting the app might be banned. But then, a technical problem led him to believe a ban might be beginning. The problem, which was later fixed, made a video counting tool disappear. “I thought it was the end,” Gibson told Reuters news agency. “I didn’t even have time to think things through.” Gibson said he recorded a personal goodbye video for his 4.6 million fans, asking them to follow him on YouTube and Facebook’s Instagram.
Other TikTok fans are staying with the service for now. TikTokBan has received more than 212 million views on the app, while SaveTikTok got over 315 million. Fans are concerned that if the app is actually shut down, it will challenge the values that Americans hold dear, such as freedom of speech.
Competing video sharing services like Triller and Byte have watched downloads of their apps rise. Some rivals (对手) are now directly targeting TikTok users. Triller, which became known for its heavy use of hip-hop music, is seeking to sign up top TikTok stars to join, said Ryan Kavanaugh, founder of Triller. Dylan Tate is a TikTok user from Greenville, South Carolina with 1.2 million followers. He has been urging other TikTok users to move to the Byte app in his recent videos. Tate says one big reason to move is that Byte gives 100 percent of ad earnings to video creators.
32. What can we know about TikTok in Paragraph 1
A. Its employees have easy access to user data.
B. It can protect their users from losing their jobs.
C. It is a platform where users protect their privacy.
D. It may be banned for possibly misusing users’ information.
33. How did Ty Gibson react to the ban
A. He was shocked and angry at first. B. He didn’t take the ban seriously at first.
C. He chose to stick to TikTok despite the ban. D. He attracted more fans with his goodbye video.
34. What happened to the competing video sharing service
A. They made efforts to support TikTok.
B. They tried to win over top TikTok stars.
C. They forced TikTok users to download their apps.
D. They advertised their videos to make more money.
35 What is the main idea of the passage
A. The ban makes people familiar with TikTok in the USA.
B. TikTok and its rivals are competing for customers.
C. TikTok becomes increasingly stronger despite the ban.
D. US TikTok users prepare for life without the app.

Dear Peter,
I’m thrilled to hear that you are planning to visit Chongqing. As a passionate ambassador of my hometown, I’m writing to share some insights about the enchanting city.
Chongqing, nestled in the mountainous region of Southwest China, is renowned for its stunning landscapes, rich history and mouth-watering cuisine. From my perspective, a must-visit is the Three Gorges, where you can take a cruise and marvel at the breathtaking scenery. Additionally, the Chongqing Zoo is home to the adorable giant pandas, a delightful tourist spot for all ages. Of course, the Hongya Dong, offering a unique cultural experience, is also recommended.
Then here come my tips about your trip. The climate in November can be humid, so pack accordingly. What’s more, consider staying near the city center for easy access to attractions and dining. Lastly, be cautious about the hilly terrain, as it can be quite a workout.
I hope my advice can be of help and you can have a fantastic time exploring the wonders of Chongqing.
Yours,
Li Hua

After that, we will move on to our musical journey.
