Around the world more and more people are taking part in dangerous sports and activities. I would consider bungee jumping(蹦极)to be a good example of such an activity. You jump from a high place, 200 meters above the ground with an elastic(有弹性的)rope tied to your ankles. You fall at up to 150 kilometers an hour until the rope stops you from hitting the ground. It is said that about 2 million people around the world have now tried bungee jumping. Other activities which most people would say are as risky as bungee jumping include jumping from tall buildings and diving into the sea from the top of high cliffs(悬崖).
Why do people take part in such activities Some psychologists suggest that it is because life in modern society has become safe and boring.
Nowadays, according to many people, life offers little excitement. They live and work in comparatively safe conditions (条件):They buy food in shops; and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill. The answer for some of these people is to look for danger in activities such as bungee jumping.

Do you feel lonely when your best friend isn't around Here's our advice to you—and to all kinds who feel lonely sometimes.
It's hard when a best friend isn't around—maybe because he or she moved to a different school or a different class. You may feelleft out during break(间歇)or lunchtime. You want to make new friends, but how do you find them Maybe it seems like everybody else already has his or her own friends. But remember, there's always room for more friends.
Start by looking around your classroom—think about which kids you'd like to play with during break. Look for chances(机会)to say hi to them, smile, and be friendly. Offer(主动提出)to share something or express(表达)your appreciation(欣赏)to them. Invite someone to play with you or say "Do you want to sit here " in the lunchroom. When you're at break, walk over to kids you want to play with, act(举止)friendly, and say "Hi, may I join you " or just join in.
If you have trouble(问题)doing this or if you're feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends. Teachers are usually pretty good at matching(相配)people up. The best way to make friends is to be a friend. Being kind, being friendly, sharing, saying nice things, offering help—pretty soon, you'll have one, or two, or even more new friends.

I was in the fifth grade. One day, my dad's car was broken and all of the things inside were stolen(偷), including my backpack. It had my binder(活页夹), my textbooks and my notebooks, where I used to write stories. I was really sad.
I had to go to school with nothing the next day.
My teacher, Miss Taylor, was very kind to me. She gave me a new binder after I told her what had happened. She also handed me some crayons(蜡笔) and asked me if I'd like to color the front of the binder. I was really thankful for her kindness.
But I never did color the new binder, because something even better happened later that same day. Miss Taylor got a call from the office—after she hung up the phone, she said exactly," Zoe, a miracle has happened! Someone found your backpack!" I rushed to the office and got my backpack. You might not think much about where your garbage goes. But now you might want to know. Shanghai firstly introduced a garbage-sorting policy. People there need to put different kinds of garbage into different bins. Other cities in China also follow to do the same soon.
Why is garbage sorting a big problem It's because there is too much garbage these days. It is bad for our soil(土壤), air and water. Actually, we can make use of some garbage again. And first, we need to sort our garbage.

Can't factories sort garbage for us Yes, they can. But it takes many workers to do this and costs lots of money. If we all sort our own garbage, things will become much easier.
Recyclable garbage includes (包括) paper, books, boxes, newspapers, and glass bottles.
Harmful garbage includes lamps, batteries and other things with harmful chemicals(有害化学物质).

In Canada and the United States, people enjoy entertaining (请客) at home. They often invite friends over for a meal, a party, or just for a coffee and conversation.
Here are some kinds of things people say when they invite someone to their homes:
"Would you like to come over for dinner on Saturday night "
"Hey, we're having a party on Friday. Can you come "
To reply to an invitation, either say thank you and accept, or say you're sorry, and give an excuse:
"Thanks, I'd love to. What time would you like me to come " or "Oh, sorry, I've had tickets for a movie. "
Sometimes, however, people use expressions that sound like invitations but which are not real invitations. For example:
"Please come over for a drink sometime. "
"Why not get together for a party sometime "
"Why don't you come over and see us sometime soon "
They are really just polite ways of ending a conversation. They are not real invitations because they don't mention a specific (确定的) time or date. They just show that the person is trying to be friendly. To reply to expressions like these, people just say "Sure, that would be great! " or "OK, thanks. "
So next time when you hear what sounds like an invitation, listen carefully: Is it a real invitation or is the person just being friendly

At the age of 27, I went back to college after a long break from schooling. I was taking a college math class, but I found it too hard to learn math now and I was trying to keep up.
I sat behind a young man. Upon first look, he looked like a thug. I didn't like how he looked and believed that he would never be able to work out any math problem.
One day in math class, we were learning a new formula (方程式). We needed to make use of the formula to do some calculations (计算). I kept getting a number that was thousands off of the correct answer. I moved backward and forward in my chair and groaned.
The "thug" that sat in front of me turned around and said,"Let me see what you got."
It turns out that he was very good at math. He explained the formula to me slowly. About 10 minutes later, I worked it out.

Two seeds(种子) lay in the soil(土壤).
The first seed said, " I want to grow to feel the warmth of the sun on my face and the beauty of the fresh dew(露水) on my flowers in the morning! I will make friends with other plants, and we can grow together." So she grew. Then she saw that the other seed did nothing. She asked, "①"
The other seed said," I am afraid. You know first I should go into the ground below, but I don't know what I'll meet in the dark. Second, before I open my flowers, I should push my way through the hard soil above me to be a strong plant, but I might hurt. At last, when I open my flowers, a child might pull me out of the ground. No, it is much better for me to wait until it's safe."
The first seed didn't know what to say. The second seed sat there still. A big hen was walking nearby and looking for food. She found the second seed and ate it.

When you send party invitation letters, you are hoping that the people receiving them will go to your party. But there is no reason to buy expensive invitations to encourage people to go to your party. If people think that they can have a great time at your party by reading your invitations, they will come. So it's important to learn how to write invitations. Here are some tips that will help you do that.
Write down all the important details (细节) in your invitations. For example, names of the party's hosts, what the party is celebrating, the reason for the party, place, start and end time, dress code and other details you feel are necessary.
Think about the party's purpose when writing your invitations. For example, a child's birthday party invitation letter might be informal (非正式的), while you might write a graduation (毕业) party invitation in formal words. You need a formal invitation for a wedding, but an informal one for a party for your best friend.
Decide if you want to write your invitations by hand. Invitations that are written by hand are more personal than printed invitations. Printed invitations are more formal, although you should take the time to write your name on them.
Send your invitations at a right time. If you are having a party during a holiday, send your invitations early so your friends and family members will have time to mark their calendars for the party. If your friends and family members need to travel to go to your party, leave them enough time for traveling.
97.If an invitation letter is informal, it may be _______.
A.a birthday party for your best friend
B.a wedding party for your workmates
C.a welcome party for your teachers
D.a graduation party for your friends
98.What can we learn from the passage
A.One must write a dress code in his invitation.
B.The more expensive the invitation is, the better it is.
C.Invitations written by hand may be the best for close friends.
D.People don't need to write anything by hand on printed invitations.
99.Which of the following shows the right structure (结构) of the passage
(①=Paragraph 1; ②=Paragraph 2 ...)
A. B.
C. D.
100.What's the purpose of the passage
A.To tell us how to write an invitation.
B.To show why we should invite people.
C.To describe what we should do at parties.
D.To discuss where to have a party for friends.
