“It was written in some sense,” Sophie Blake, a physics professor, would end up in observational cosmology — the study of the origin and development of the universe using specialized telescopes. “I’m not going to lie. My father was a physicist. My mother’s an astronomer. But no kid wants to be like their parents,” she jokes, semi-seriously.
Blake always enjoyed building things like a child engineer. It wasn’t unusual for her to experiment with her father’s research equipment. She thanks, in part, her short attention period for her inquisitiveness, “I am always looking for something.”
For the last few years, Blake has been searching for signs of the universe’s early existence — from the birth of the first stars to the “cosmic (宇宙的) dark ages” — and she’s building her own equipment to explore beyond the known universe, focusing on its distant past with novel radio technology. Since 2017, Blake and her team have been engineering and planting radio telescopes in two of the Earth’s most remote (and quietest) locations for the best shot at hearing the earliest voice of the universe.
Initially, Blake planned a PhD in particle (粒子) physics but switched direction after a visit to a lab with messy equipment and tools everywhere at the California Institute of Technology. “I didn’t know about observational cosmology then but thought, ‘Whatever this is, I want to do that.’”
She spent a year at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, after conducting experiments of a balloon-borne microwave telescope launched from McMurdo. “That really inspired my love for remote places,” she said.
Eventually, she wanted to engineer her own instruments. After her year at the South Pole, she joined the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. At that time, the site decision was made for the largest radio telescope group on Earth.
“This was also a leap of faith because I really couldn’t continue the work I was doing before.” Blake recalls. “I had never done radio before but I thought, ‘Let me give this a try and see how it goes.’”
24. What can we infer from Blake’s joke in paragraph 1
A. She follows in her parents’ footsteps.
B. She develops an interest in telescopes.
C. She lies about her parents’ professions.
D. She lives up to her parents’ expectations.
25. What does the underlined word “inquisitiveness” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Talent. B. Courage. C. Curiosity. D. Intelligence.
26. What stimulated Blake’s passion for distant places
A. Her visit to a lab in a university.
B. Her wish to build her own equipment.
C. Her faith in hearing the cosmic sound.
D. Her experience at a South Pole Station.
27. Which of the following best describes Blake
A. Confident and caring. B. Generous and optimistic.
C. Modest and open-minded. D. Adventurous and determined.
C
Have you ever seen the Moon rising over your town or city It can appear very large when it is low on the horizon. Our moon goes through phases(月相) and it looks a little different every day. When the whole moon is lit up, it is called a full moon. When the Moon is entirely dark, it’s a new moon. When there is only a thin edge of the circle shining, it’s a crescent moon.
When a crescent moon is rising, we can occasionally see a unique event. When the Sun, the Earth, and the Moon are lined up just right, some of the sunlight that hits the Earth can be reflected onto the Moon. This causes most part of the Moon to give off a faint glow, while the rest of the Moon is brightly lit by the sunlight.
This phenomenon is named the Da Vinci glow. It was Leonardo da Vinci, a great artist, inventor and scientist, who explained it for the first time. Sometimes, it is also called “earthshine.”
When Da Vinci wrote about earthshine, he suggested that it might be caused by sunlight reflected from the Earth’s oceans. He was almost completely correct, except for one detail: most of the reflected sunlight comes from the clouds in our atmosphere. The reflected light from the Earth is bright enough to light up the side of the Moon that isn’t receiving direct sunlight.
The Da Vinci glow is not easy to see. Conditions need to be just right. Due to the angles of light, the Moon has to be very low on the horizon. The best time to see it will be in the days before and after the new moon. During these days, the lit-up edge of the crescent moon is at its thinnest stage. If you observe the Moon before sunrise or after sunset, it may be possible to witness the reflected light from the Earth. For the best experience, choose a location outdoors where there is not too much artificial light. You can use a telescope, but it’s not necessary since the Moon will look just as impressive when viewed with the bare eye.
28. Which of the following is the Da Vinci glow
A. B.
C. D.
29. What is the main cause of the Da Vinci glow
A. Sunlight received by the Moon’s surface.
B. Sunlight reflected from the Earth’s clouds.
C. Sunlight reflected from the Earth’s oceans.
D. Sunlight received by the Moon’s lit-up edge.
30. Why is the Da Vinci glow an unusual phenomenon
A. It requires specific light conditions.
B. It lasts too short to be observed.
C. It occurs at the crescent moon stage.
D. It needs bright light from the Sun.
31. Which of the following matters most to an ideal observation of the phenomenon
A. A suitable place. B. Good eyesight.
C. A special instrument. D. Bright moonlight.

Making employees feel happy and healthy at work is good for many businesses. But it isn’t always an easy thing. A research suggests that just 33% of the U. S. employees consider themselves fully engaged (投身于) at work, while 16% are actively disengaged, and 51% are just showing up.
But there is an exception. When it comes to employee engagement, it seems that employees in small companies are doing better. According to the same research, the largest U. S. companies have the lowest levels of engagement, while companies with fewer than 25 employees have the highest. And in one recent report, 75 percent of small business workers surveyed said they were “very” or “extremely” satisfied with their role as a small company employee.
Unlike big companies, small companies are often short of resources but the employees can get more surprises there. Small companies offer excellent career opportunities to their employees. The bosses often know their staff very well and understand their personal needs. Employees of small companies are more likely to receive free meals, paid leave, and they can even bring their pets to work.
But of course, there’re many other draws in small businesses. One of the top draws is flexible scheduling (弹性工时). Another is being able to really see the fruits of one’s labor. Besides, noncash award is also a big draw. This could be something small that reflects employees’ interests and lifestyles.
While a parental leave might lead to some financial problems, small companies may do something to improve it. “It may be impossible for a five person team to be reduced to four for six months,” writes Camilla Velasquez, head of HR management platform Just works. “But it could be possible to allow new parents to take on reduced hours in a work from home environment.” This kind of method has been realized in some small companies.
32. What can we infer from Paragraph 2 ______
A. Employees can develop better in small companies.
B. Employees can earn more money in small companies.
C. Employees in big companies are hard to be satisfied.
D. Employees in small companies are more engaged at work.
33. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about ______
A. The benefits of working for small companies.
B. The differences between small and big companies.
C. What challenges staff in small companies may face.
D. Why small companies are short of resources.
34. What does the underlined word “draws” in Paragraph 4 mean ______
A. Choices. B. Attractions. C. Difficulties. D. Competitions.
35. What can be most probably inferred from the passage ______
A. Small companies may have more employees with much happiness.
B. Big companies should learn from some small companies.
C. Employees should have their own hobbies and lifestyles.
D. Employers should pay more attention to the staff’s needs.

James had always been a quiet and shy boy, spending most of his time reading books under the shade of a big oak tree in the schoolyard. Despite his shyness, James had a kind heart and was always willing to help others. One day, during lunch break, he noticed a new student sitting alone in the corner of the schoolyard.
The boy looked sad and out of place. James hesitated for a moment before deciding to approach him. “Hi, I’m James,” he said softly. The boy looked up, surprised, and managed a weak smile. “Hi, I’m Liam,” he replied. James sat down beside Liam and started talking to him. To James’ delight, Liam seemed to brighten up as they chatted about books and favorite subjects.
In the following days, James and Liam became fast friends. Liam had just moved to town and was struggling to fit in, but James made sure he felt welcomed. However, their friendship faced a challenge when a group of boys in the class, known for being bullies, started mocking Liam for his accent and his habit of drawing during class breaks.
One afternoon, as James walked into the schoolyard, he saw the bullies surrounding Liam, laughing at his sketchbook. James felt anger boiling inside him. But he also felt nervous—standing up to the bullies would mean putting himself in the spotlight, something he had always avoided.

第一节:
An English Song Singing Competition
To arouse our interest in English, an English song singing competition was organized in our classroom last week.
The competition started at 7 p.m. and lasted two hours. Students who had a good command of singing took turns to sing the song they had chosen carefully. Their performances in which they wore beautiful costumes were so wonderful that all of us were thrilled. After the heated competition, the student who gave superb performance was presented an award by our head teacher.
It was evident that the activity was well organized and the competition went on smoothly and successfully. The activity was highly spoken of because not only did it enrich our school life but also developed our feeling of love for English language.
第二节:
James clenched his fists and took a deep breath before stepping forward. “Leave him alone!” he shouted, his voice trembling but firm. The bullies turned, surprised. “What’s it to you ” one sneered, holding Liam’s sketchbook. James walked up and took it back. “It’s his, not yours. And his drawings are amazing!” he said, glaring at them. The bullies exchanged looks, muttered something, and left. James handed the sketchbook to Liam, his heart still racing.
Liam smiled gratefully. “Thanks, James,” he said softly. James opened the sketchbook and saw a drawing of the big oak tree, with himself reading under it. “This is amazing!” James exclaimed. “I drew it for you,” Liam said shyly. James felt warmth in his chest. From that day, their friendship grew stronger, and James realized standing up for others didn’t make him weaker—it made him braver.
