Finnish Lapland, in the far north of Europe, is home to some 180,000 people and around 200,000 reindeer (驯鹿). The animals live wild but each one has an owner, identified by a mark on its ear. Anne Ollila, 50, one of 4,000 such owners, works in the Finnish part of this region with her husband and two adult sons and their families. They farm the animals mainly for meat, but reindeer tourism has also become an important source of income.
Ollila lives 80 kilometres inside the Arctic Circle, an hour from Lapland’s capital city, Rovaniemi, and seven kilometres from her nearest neighbour. Summer days — when the reindeer raisers earmark newborn reindeer — are long and in June the sun never sets. At that time Ollila sleeps during the day and walks up to 20 kilometres a night through the forest, making the most of the cooler temperatures to do her work but having to endure large groups of insects along the way.
In deepest winter, there is little daylight. Many grasslands are frozen and the reindeer move into the forest for protection against wolves and golden eagles — the birds can kill an adult reindeer.
Ollila and her family offer tourists reindeer experiences through their company Reindeer Journey. Visitors can get close to the animals in the wild or at their farm, watching them being trained to pull sledges (雪橇) or take a sleigh ride.
“Reindeer are very smart animals,” Ollila says. “They have different personalities, and some are very funny.” One of her favourities is Rocky, named after the movie boxing legend. “He’s very curious and always in trouble,” she says. “He once got himself stuck in tree branches and had to be lifted out, and he has been known to walk off with his owners’ drying underwear.”
Ollila gave up her job as a sociology researcher at the University of Lapland in 2010 to devote herself to raising reindeer. “I love the environment, the animals and the freedom,” she says. “Also, I have a sense of belonging to something bigger than me, to a way of life through the generations.”
What does the underlined word “endure” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Go away with. B. Catch up with.
C. Look forward to. D. Put up with.
25. Why do the reindeer move into the forest in winter according to the text

26. What does Ollila think of Rocky
A. He is foolish.
B. He is a troublemaker.
C. He is a famous filmmaker.
D. He is interested in planting trees.
27. What can we infer about Ollila from the last paragraph
A. She has a deep affection for nature.
B. She has long been tired of raising reindeer.
C. She has been a sociology researcher since 2010.
D. She had no chance to receive a college education.

California researchers developed a glove equipped with electronic sensors that can translate American Sign Language (ASL) into English in real time through an app on your smartphone.
Unlike its past version, the new glove is lightweight, inexpensive and long-lasting. The device could help remove communication difficulties between signers and non-signers. Hopefully, this may open up an easy way for people who use sign language to communicate directly with non-signers without needing someone else to translate for them.
The team worked with four people who are deaf and use ASL and had them repeat gestures up to 15 times while wearing the glove-like device, teaching a machine how to recognize them at the same time.
The glove has thin, stretchable sensors made from “electrically conducting yarns” that run up each finger and change the movements into signals. These signals are sent to a “dollar-coin-sized” circuit board (电路板) placed on the person’s wrist, which then wirelessly transfers them over to a smartphone.
The system was able to recognize 660 hand motions and finger placements that stand for each letter in the English alphabet, different phrases and each number. The algorithm (计算程序) recognized the correct signs about 99% of the time, and in less than one second — or about a tone word per second.
The researchers also placed sensors in between the participants eyebrows and on the sides of their mouths to “change facial expressions that are a part of ASL”. The same exact hand-shape and movement can totally change meaning because of the facial expression that is used to accompany it. Take the word MUCH. The degree of how much can totally be determined by the facial expression alone while the sign stays the same.
Researchers said the glove would need to learn more vocabulary and be able to translate signs faster in order to get a commercial version of it in stores.
Who is the new glove intended for
A. Translators. B. Deaf people.
C. English learners. D. Sign language users.
29. What does Paragraph 4 mainly say about the new glove
A. Its reliability. B. Its parts.
C. Its working principle. D. Its broad applications.
30. How do researchers improve the glove’s correctness of recognition
A. By connecting it to smartphones.
B. By catching information from more angles.
C. By lengthening the time of catching gestures.
D. By inputting more letters and words in English.
31. What will researchers do with the glove in the future
A. Bring it to market. B. Update its outlook.
C. Extend its service life. D. Improve its performance.

Research has shown that listening to music while showering, taking a walk or travelling to school could affect your ability to think outside the box and come up with artistic or creative things to do. Experts say being bored can lead to daydreaming plus the birth of new ideas.
While there is nothing wrong with listening to music, doing so when taking a shower or going for a walk takes away time that could be spent thinking about yourself and your life—the perfect time to let your creative juices flow. Happiness expert Gretchen Rubin said, “You need this open-searching time in order for new ideas to spring up. This is why people get ideas in the shower or in the middle of the night—it’s a period of time when the brain creates its own fun. It’s when I’m bored that I have big insights because my brain is open and trying to entertain itself.”
A recent study by psychologists showed the same process at work. In the research, two groups of people were expected to come up with proposals. They were then asked to complete the task in two backgrounds. One is in a quiet room while the other is with music playing. Researchers found, compared to participants who completed tasks in a quiet background, participants who listened to music performed less creatively.
So, is it best to throw away the bath-time tunes Most people said the research was a real mood killer. One said, “Sometimes, I need the music to cover all the thoughts I don’t want to think.” Another commented, “Many people have too much going on in their heads. That’s why they listen to music in the shower, by which they can actually relax.” But other listeners said they liked having quiet time while travelling home at the end of the day.
In any case, striking a good balance and listening to music sometimes but being quiet at other times could be the best balance in our life.
What do the experts find according to the first paragraph
Keeping our minds busy brings in new ideas.
Listening to music helps to bring inspiration.
Taking a walk keeps us from daydreaming.
Feeling bored tends to stir up our creativity.
How does the psychologists do the research
By observing through daily life.
By referring to former reports.
By carrying out an experiment.
By filling up a questionnaire.
How do most people find the result of the research
Unacceptable. B. Misleading. C. Confusing. D. Convincing.
What is the best title for the text
Does your playlist really appeal to you
Is it time to throw away your playlist
Listening to music keeps us mentally fit.
Being quiet is always a good habit for us.

If the only reading you ever do is the novel or magazine, the speed at which you read probably does not matter very much. But if you have to read a great deal for study, you will appreciate the benefits of being able to read more quickly. 36
Before you open the book, make sure that you are comfortable. You need a seat which supports your back. 37 Keep the room cool rather than warm to avoid feeling sleepy.
38 Look at the table of contents, the preface, the chapter heading, etc. This will help you to decide whether you really need to read the whole book or only certain parts of it. Ten minutes spent in this way could save you quite a lot of time in the long run.
If you decide that you need to read the whole book, decide how much you can read at a time. 39 ,
A history book which may contain the facts in story form will be easier to read than one dealing with scientific subjects. In the former case you may be able to read a chapter. In the latter you may only be able to read one page.
Always keep a pencil and paper beside you. 40 Note also the facts important for your purpose as well as anything which leads you to further research. You don't have to write these things in detail. It is enough to put the page number and one or two words as a reminder.
,,,,A. Stop to have a rest now and then.
,,,B. Spend a few minutes looking through the book.
,,,C. This depends on the type of book you are reading.
,,,D. Here are some tips to help improve your reading speed.

Raju’s family was the smallest family on the coastal line of Kanyakumari. Raju was 10 years old. He was tall, dark and handsome and had a lot of dreams. He had always dreamt of living in a city. He was always his dad’s charm, as he was not quite happy to spend time with his mom. All he could remember about his mom was her scars (伤疤), red and white scars on her face, neck and hands. He always felt unpleasant to see his mom’s face. But what he did not know was that his mom scratched her beauty to save him from a fire when he was one year old. Not wanting to burden him with it, Raju’s parents kept it a secret.
His mom Kamala used to drop him to school and pick him up every day. He felt awkward to see his mom with that scarred face standing in front of the school gate. As he was laughing and chatting with his fellow school mates, all of them became silent and started staring at the gate. So, Raju turned towards the gate with a lot of curiosity. He froze when seeing his mom, face covered with a piece of cloth. Raju felt ashamed and rushed out of the school with lots of anger.
With days passing by, Raju started to dislike his mom more. He did not like to get picked up or dropped by his mom. He felt that she was ugly and so abnormal. As he grew old, he stopped going out with her to the market or anywhere outside. Kamala tried her best to make her son happy, got him everything that he wanted and gave him his space. She understood what her son was going through and felt pity for herself and sad for her son, as she was helpless.
When Raju turned 15, he was sent to a city high school 67 kilometers away from his coastal village. The very thought of not being with his ugly mother made him very happy.
Three years later, then came Raju’s graduation ceremony. His parents didn’t want to be absent from such an important occasion, so they managed to be there without informing Raju.
