Shipping containers are becoming increasingly popular compared to traditional houses. These 20- or 40-foot containers can be obtained as low as several hundred US dollars each, and it’s not surprising that some industry professionals and even city planners consider them the future of home building. Below are details of some amazing homes made out of shipping containers.
London Container City (I and II)
London’s Container City first sprang up in the heart of the docklands in 2001. It took just five months to complete the original 12 work studios. Shortly after that, a fourth floor of studios and living apartments was built on top of these. The first container city was so successful that another—Container City II — was added to it.
Los Angeles Redondo Beach house
With its modern lines and appealing spaces, the award-winning Redondo Beach House is a luxury beachside showpiece built from eight recycled steel shipping containers, along with some traditional building materials. According to the architects, the improved containers are “nearly indestructible”.
Amsterdam Keetwonen
Amsterdam’s massive Keetwonen complex houses 1,000 students and it is the largest container city in the world. The housing project is a roaring success and features units that are quiet and comfortable. Each resident enjoys a bathroom, kitchen and separate sleeping and studying quarters. The complex even has central heating and high-speed internet as well as areas for parking bikes.
Mexico M2ATK Container House
M2ATK designed this unique container house for an artist. It’s fully equipped with heating and cooling, a kitchen and bathroom. On the bottom floor of the house are ‘‘public spaces” such as the kitchen and living room. The second floor is the bedroom, and the top floor is a studio space in which to work, read and “let fly the imagination”.
21. Compared to traditional houses, container houses are _____.
A. much easier to repair B. more comfortable to live in
C. less expensive to build D. more fashionable in style
22. What can be learned about Amsterdam’s Keetwonen complex
A. It offers shared and unique living space.

D. It’s equipped with modern facilities.
23. Which of the following is the best title for the poster
A. Home in a Steel Box
B. Housing Options and Solutions
C. Recycled Material for Ideal Home

I am a multi-sport athlete and seasoned coach. When I was growing up, school wasn’t really my thing, but sport very much was. Athletics connected me to my school community by giving me a sense of belonging and success even when I struggled in the classroom. When I entered education, I knew I wanted to be more than a coach on the field and court—I wanted to help students like me make meaningful connections to school through sports.
I designed a program around the concepts of comfort and stretch zones. On day one, I set up a range of equipment for different sports across a field. In groups, students discussed sports that they felt comfortable and safe playing. They then took turns selecting their comfort sport on the field, doing a brief share, and playing with their group. Afterward, we had a class discussion on the importance of doing things that bring joy and passion, and how sharing that passion with others motivates us and the people around us.
On day two, with the same field design and sporting equipment, I introduced the idea of stretch zones. Students formed the same groups as on day one and discussed which sports were out of their comfort zone and more challenging to them. Some of my students were shy and others slightly frustrated (沮丧) as they struggled to perform the skills in sports in which they were not comfortable. Then we discussed, as a class, how even when something is challenging, if we recognize the difficulty and intentionally practice, we give ourselves the opportunity to overcome it over time.
The program required more than just adjusting my curriculum (课程)—it also meant some changes to the way I taught. I found myself opening up to my students and sharing my own hardships and successes with them. As a result, my students felt freer to be their real selves.
24. What did the author think of sport when he was a student
A. It helped him get attached to school.
B. It led to a decline in his grades.
C. It made him struggle in the classroom.
D. It appealed mainly to seniors.
25. Why did the author design the program
A. To change curricula and teaching methods.
B. To prepare students for unexpected challenges.
C. To deepen students’ connections with school.
D. To share hardship and success with students.
26. What was a problem facing the author on the second day of the program
A. Students wanted material rewards.
B. It was difficult to group students.
C. Some students feared challenges.
D. The sports field became crowded.
27. What can we infer about the author
A. He is involved in one sport. B. He used to be very shy.
C. He is in favor of safe sports. D. He is a creative teacher.
C
Adults are often ashamed to ask for help. Seeking someone’s help can make you feel like you are broadcasting your inability. New research suggests young children don’t seek help in school for the same reason.
Kayla Good, a graduate student at Stanford University, and Alex Shaw, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Chicago, applied a classic technique to learn more about how children think about reputation: Across several studies, they asked 576 children aged four to nine, to predict the behavior of two characters, Tom and Jack, in a story. Tom really wanted to be smart, and Jack only wanted to seem smart to others. In one study, they told children both characters did poorly on a test, and asked which of them would be more likely to raise their hands in front of their class to ask the teacher for help.
The four-year-olds were equally likely to choose either of the two characters as the one who would seek help. But by age seven or eight, children thought Jack would be less likely to ask for help. And children's expectations were truly “reputational” in nature—they were specially thinking about how the characters would act in front of peers. They could still imagine situations where Jack would seek help: when it could be sought privately (on a computer rather than in person), children thought both characters were equally likely to ask for it.
Given the findings, it seems quite possible that when children themselves are the ones struggling, they, too, might avoid seeking out help if they are concerned about reputation. If so, the unwillingness to seek help when others are present could clearly impede learning progress. To improve in any field, one must work hard, take on challenging tasks, and ask questions. However, the situation can be difficult when someone is concerned about their impressions on others.
28. What were the children asked to predict about the two characters
A. Their likeliness to get help.
B. Their possibility of seeking help.
C. Their performance in a test.
D. Their understanding of reputation.
29. Who was likely to seek private aid according to the eight-year-olds
A. Tom. B. Jack. C. Neither. D. Both.
30. What does the underlined word “impede” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Prevent B. Secure.
C. Advance. D. Recover.
31. What is the author’s suggestion for kids
A. Be ready to help others. B. Make efforts to be smarter.
C. Care less about reputation. D. Be brave to ask for help.
D
Studying the DNA of 300 mice has flagged up (引起注意) genes which have been linked to hereditary (遗传的) sight loss for the first time. Researchers say because mice’s genes are so similar to humans’, their findings could lead to the treatment of more genetic diseases.
Scientists at the University of California, Davis studied information from a data bank of mice’s genetic material. They found 347 genes linked to eye problems, with just 86 of them having been studied in the past.
Only around 50 to 75 percent of hereditary eye diseases in human can be explained with present science. The researchers believe these hundreds of new genes found in mice could be a key to explaining and therefore being able to treat the other 25-50 percent.
“This is extremely valuable for people with hereditary eye disease,” said researcher Professor Ala Moshiri. “All researchers are going to start using these data. In the past, we knew the problem was there but we didn’t know where to look. Now eye centers can call back patients and screen them for these new genes. We expected that more and more of these genetic diseases will be treatable.” Also, the fact is that more than 60 percent of eye problems at birth are ones resulting from the baby’s parents!
Thanks to data from the International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC), which is trying to work out what every single gene in a mouse is responsible for, with the aim of translating it to humans, scientists are moving closer to figuring out all genetic causes of blindness. To do this, scientists separate a single gene from other ones at a time and then observe what effect it has on the mouse for a long time. This has so far been done more than 7,000 times and has achieved great success. Researchers are now working alongside eye care centers in Texas and Iowa in order to compare the mice's genes to those of patients.
32. How did the researchers find the genes linked to eye problems
A. By tracking down the baby’s parents.
B. By screening patients for new genes.
C. By studying the data of mice’s genes.
D. By figuring out all genetic causes.
33. Why is the percentage of genetic eye problems mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To warn the high-risk level of suffering them.
B. To prove mice’s genes are similar to humans’.
C. To explain how common they are among people.
D. To show the importance of studying mice’s genes.
34. What should scientists do first to unlock secrets of genetic blindness
A. Set apart a gene of mouse each time.
B. Compare human’s genes with mice’s.
C. Cooperate with eye care centers.
D. Identify each gene’s function of a mouse.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. New Ways to Cure Sight Loss
B. Genes Found Behind Eye Problems
C. Genetic Disease Discovered in Mice
D. Humans Genes Causing Eye Disease
