My wife always wanted a Vizsla, so when we got the house, the garden and everything sorted, we did some research and found a lovely breeder based in Scotland. He was in charge of everything, so a few months go by and the next thing I know, we’ve got a puppy!
I’ve grown up with animals all my life, and I’m so glad I have. I love the fact that I was never afraid of any animals. Although you do obviously have to be careful when introducing children to a dog they don’t know, because you don’t know how it’s going to behave, it always saddens me when I see children scared when they walk past Pedro. I think it’s great for kids to learn how to look after an animal.
And obviously for us, as a family, it’s brilliant because we take Pedro for so many walks. It’s a bit of a family bonding experience getting out in the fresh air; taking Pedro for a walk multiple times a day is just really lovely. Meanwhile, the most rewarding, I think, is just seeing how amazing he is with the kids. He is so calm, so protective, so loving, and we are his world.
I think the most challenging aspects with Pedro were when he was a puppy. He was pretty hard work. He was never aggressive, but he was quite bitey as puppies are, constantly pulling out your clothes and putting holes in them, which is very annoying. He chewed the furniture-my sofas are barely standing up; their wooden legs are almost in pieces. Obviously, the dog training in the house was quite stressful and his jumping at strangers in the park and running off was always quite scary.
As a new puppy owner, you’re overloaded with advice from social media, magazines, other dog owners and friends, so finding a source of information you trust is so important and can be a real turning point. I know what it’s like to be bombarded with conflicting information, so I would have really welcomed Royal Canin’s “One in a Billion” platform as a new puppy owner. It’s a one-stop shop for new dog owners: a single source of credible information that is so helpful in navigating the early stages of your puppy’s life.
24. What do we know about the author
A. He is inexperienced in raising pets.
B. He is unsupportive of his wife’s desire.
C. He feels it a pity that children shy away from pets.
D. He thinks one should be cautious about raising pets.
25. How does the author think of Pedro
A. Dangerous but loyal. B. Adorable but troublesome.
C. Playful and gentle. D. Annoying and fierce.
26. What can we infer according to paragraph 4
A. Dogs are man’s best friends.
B. It is worthless to have a dog.
C. Puppies are unfriendly to humans.
D. It is challenging to train a puppy.
27. What is the purpose of the last paragraph
A. To recommend a reliable platform.
B. To share an interesting experience.
C. To offer evidence for an argument.
D. To advertise a practical product.
C
Air conditioning use has exploded in the last 30 years. According to U. S. Census data in 1993, just about three-quarters of single family homes in the Midwest had air conditioning. In the West and Northeast, it was just about half. Now, all regions are pushing 100 percent air conditioning coverage. In the South, it’s been at about 100 percent since the early 1990s.
As the cost of air conditioning installation has gone down, and temperatures have gone up, Americans have been offered an opportunity for a steady indoor temperature year-round, regardless of the weather outside. This drive for comfort forces us to disconnect from what’s happening all around us. A conditioned climate allows us to completely ignore the changing seasons and our warming planet. Only listening to people who agree with us — or trying to silence those who disagree — creates our own, individually conditioned realities.
New York University professor and social psychologist Jonathan Haidt showed how the comforts of conveniences “atomize” our social structures. Each new technology that makes our lives easier also makes us less reliant on other people. Haidt’s big focus is on smartphones and social media, as explored in his recent book, but our society was cracking off into smaller and smaller pieces long before we had the robots in our pockets.
Cars allowed us to shop in other towns, reducing reliance on local businesses. A television set gave something for people to do in the evenings, reducing the need to hang out with neighbors, and by extension, eroding community structures and institutions (often called “third places”, in contrast to work and home). Air conditioning allowed us to stay inside in the heat, limiting a play-based childhood where kids run around with each other and make their own fun.
What if we all turned off the air conditioning for a bit, opened our windows, and truly experienced life as it was happening, not what we manufactured it to be We might be a little less comfortable, but maybe a little more connected.
28. What can we infer from the first two paragraphs
A. Air conditioning easily shapes our individual personality.
B. Air conditioned houses are more comfortable than others.
C. Air conditioning can reduce our connection with the world.
D. Air conditioning is accessible to every household in the US.
29. Why does the author mention Haidt
A. To promote his recent book.
B. To praise human self-reliance.
C. To illustrate technological advances.
D. To reveal the harm of air conditioning.
30. What does the word “eroding” underlined in paragraph 4 refer to
A. Constructing. B. Destroying. C. Avoiding. D. Improving.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Turn off Air Conditioning for a Bit
B. Experience Your Life to the Fullest
C. Keep Away from Air Conditioned Houses
D. Never Create Our Own Conditioned Realities
D
There are functioning steam railways in other countries: tourists in France can go for a ride in Brittany; so can visitors travelling to the Dandenong Ranges in Australia. But no other country has a heritage railway sector anywhere near as energetic as the UK’s, where more than 170 services cross around 600 miles of track and call at 460 stations.
Just a few years after the first of these railways opened at Talyllyn in north Wales, in 1951, a fictional Welsh steam engine became the main character in the children’s television serial Ivor the Engine. On lines originally built for slate quarries (石板采石场), north Wales still has the biggest group of steam railways, but they exist in all four nations of the UK, typically operating seasonal timetables in tourist areas. These railways are living museums with stations decorated in period style. Some staff wear costumes too.
Up to 95% of the 18.5m journeys on heritage railways each year are taken by domestic tourists. They owe their popularity to a combination of nostalgia (怀旧), enjoyment of the countryside and enthusiasm for the old engines.
Railways are expensive to run, and the first steam preservation enthusiasts recognized that they would need volunteers to make their dream of a revival come true. This reliance on volunteers is partly due to cuts in budgets from local authorities and other funders. But heritage railways are a good example of what can be achieved by a combined paid and voluntary workforce. As well as the economic contribution that the railways make to rural areas, there is evidence that volunteering can have beneficial effects on people as well.
The railways will need to respond, like the rest of the society, to environmental policies. The destructive impact of greenhouse gases is an obvious challenge to a sector that trades on an image of coal-powered transport. Electric railway engines are being used for maintenance, to bring emissions down, and some railways are active in wildlife conservation. There will need to be further adaptation down the line. That the railways don’t stand still has always been part of their appeal especially on rainy days in the summer holidays.
32. How are the UK’s steam railways different from other countries'
A. They are active across the countries.
B. They serve as tourist attractions.
C. They are mainly powered by steam.
D. They use small amounts of energy.
33. Why does the author mention Ivor the Engine
A. To spread knowledge of the classic serial.
B. To introduce the origin of steam engines.
C. To show the popularity of steam railways.
D. To share a childhood memory of travelling.
34. What can we infer from paragraph 4
A. Local officials don’t use old means of transport.
B. Economic growth depends on individual efforts.
C. People can’t afford to travel by heritage railway.
D. Volunteers help to keep heritage railways alive.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards heritage railways
A. Indifferent. B. Doubtful. C. Appreciative. D. Negative.

A recent study in the journal Marine Ecology Progress Series has a great influence when it comes to the question of how sharks will interact with humans as climate change continues to worsen. It predicts a world where humans and sharks will encounter more often than the present case.
Contrary to popular media descriptions that speak ill of sharks, humans will not be in that much trouble when this happens. 36 , in which millions of innocent sharks are the big losers due to human activity beyond their control.
First, let’s explore why sharks and humans will probably be running into each other’s world more often. One reason is the field of urban ecology and, specifically, how different species respond when they come across humans. 37 ; think of raccoons (浣熊) that search for food from rubbish and pigeons (鸽子) that stay on statues in major cities all over the planet. On the other hand, there are urban avoiders, or animals that avoid major cities out of self-protection; 38 .
The researchers initially believed that sharks would also be urban avoiders. 39 . Scientists learned that space use patterns of tracked sharks were consistent with those of urban adapters.
40 . The reality, however, is that humans have driven sharks to the edge of extinction while shark attacks on people remain quite rare. Humans are not sharks’ preferred prey (猎物), and the likelihood of increased human-shark interactions causes far more of a threat to sharks than to humans.
A.Surprisingly, that’s not the case
B.It will instead be a heartbreaking tragedy
C.Humans have a long lasting fear against sharks
D.Therefore, they think the sharks won’t get too close to us
E.Large animals like wolves and mountain lions fall into this category
F.Tigers and lions are so dangerous that we keep them away from our cities
G.If a species thinks its members can get along just great with us, they are known as urban adapters

读后续写 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My love for dance began when I was very young and I would dream to be a star dancer from time to time. With the drama festival approaching, the school’s drama club had released a notice for the dancer audition (试镜) for The Twelve Dancing Princesses. And of course I was the first one to sign up.
As I left the stage after my audition at school, I could feel it. The power. The future. I knew that someday when dancers’ magazines wrote about me, they would say this moment was when my rise to a star began.
My ballet slippers hurt my feet, but I figured that was helpful. In The Twelve Dancing Princesses, the princesses danced all night so they probably had foot pain, too. My performance was more genuine because of my pain. I needed to show my devotion even when I wasn’t on stage, so I approached Mr. Ellison, the drama club advisor. He told me that casting (角色分配) will be posted tomorrow.“ Thank you, sir,” I said, using the almost British pronunciation of Hollywood stars in the 1940s. I was so sure that Mr. Ellison would cast me as a princess.
The next morning, I went to read the cast list. The twelve princesses were first, by number. I scanned from One to Twelve, but none by me. At the bottom of the casting list, my name finally appeared. My role was a really small one, an old woman who helped a soldier, not one of the princesses! I was desperately disappointed. Mr. Ellison must have made a mistake! No one else in the school had my skills or preparation!.
I found him in his classroom, but he insisted there was no mistake and emphasized that every role in a play was important. Unable to accept the fact, I burst into tears. Mr. Ellison managed to calm me down and encouraged me to have a try in the rehearsal (排练).
注意:1. 续写词数应为 150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The next day, I dragged myself to the rehearsal, still feeling discouraged.
Finally, the great day arrived and “the old woman” couldn’t wait to get on stage.

Dear Lisa,
I’m delighted to know you are going to take part in a Chinese poetry reciting contest. The fact that you are so interested in Chinese culture makes me happy. Now I’d like to offer you some practical advice.
You should have a thorough understanding of what you are going to read. Only by doing this can you appreciate its beauty. Moreover, correct your pronunciation by listening to Chinese radio programs because all the announcers speak standard Chinese. What’s more, it is a good idea to make some Chinese friends and communicate with them as often as possible, which can improve your spoken Chinese.
Wish you good luck and success.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二部分 读后续写
The next day, I dragged myself to the rehearsal, still feeling discouraged. As we began, I watched the princesses dance gracefully, a twinge of jealousy stirring within me. But then, as I started to act out my role, something shifted. Mr. Ellison’s words echoed in my mind, “Every role is important.” Gradually, I immersed myself in the character of the old woman. My lines flowed naturally, and I found a newfound respect for my role. To my surprise, my performance drew applause from my peers. This small role, I realized, could be a powerful one.
Finally, the great day arrived and “the old woman” couldn’t wait to get on stage. As the curtains opened, a rush of excitement filled me. I delivered my lines with conviction, feeling more alive on stage than I had ever been. The audience laughed at my humorous lines, and I felt a sense of accomplishment. When the final curtain fell, the applause was deafening. Mr. Ellison’s words had been right — every role was important. I had found my place in the spotlight, not as a princess, but as an old woman who helped a soldier. And it was enough.
