Dear Sophia,
Hearing you’re entering the “Foreigners Tell Chinese Fables” competition, I’m glad and ready to
help you prepare for it.
Here are a few suggestions that might enhance your storytelling. First, You’d better try to choose a
fable that reflects your experiences or values, which will make your delivery more authentic and
engaging. Additionally, use expressive body language and varied tones whenever possible to bring the
emotions in your story to life.
Let me know when you’d like me to practice with you. I’m eagerly looking forward to seeing you
shine in the competition.
Yours,
Li Hua

Mildred stopped, frozen as still as a statue. Not knowing what my mother would do, she just stood
there with a confused look on her face. Mother bent down to Mildred’s level. Gently holding her hands,
Mother said softly, “I’m Marion’s mother. I need your help, Mildred.” Mildred looked at my mother,
puzzled. I stood there praying my mother’s plan would be over quickly. My mother continued, “Marion
needs a best friend to walk home with her after school. Would you be Marion’s friend, Mildred ”
Mildred chewed on her bottom lip and then nodded. “Oh, thank you!” my mother said gratefully.
Then she hugged Mildred long and hard. She gave me a quick hug and called to us, “Bye, girls. Have a
good day.” Mildred and I walked on to school, both staring straight ahead without speaking. But I noticed
Mildred was smiling. I’d never seen her smile before. We walked each day after school together, and
soon we were talking, laughing and sharing secrets. Mildred had friends and smiled a lot now. She was
getting good grades now, too. Right then I knew my mother’s plan had worked.
