66.Dear Alex,
I’m glad to hear that you are coming to China. You’ve made a wise decision to pay a visit to Jiuzhaigou.
Jiuzhaigou, surrounded by mountains with evergreen forests all year round, is an incredible place in the northern part of Si-chuan Province, which is well-known for its beautiful lakes. The lakes are so clear that you can almost see the bottoms. It is also a national park and was listed on the World Heritage List in 1992. Jiuzhaigou has become a popular tourist attraction for both Chinese and foreign tourists. Besides, the nice weather and convenient transportation there can make your trip more enjoyable. I’m sure you will have a good time travelling there.
Looking forward to your coming.
Yours,
Li Hua
67.Possible version1 :
Whenever the grandchildren came to visit, they would dash into the garden. Not surprisingly, they were going to see how the garden was growing. After watering the vegetables, they would remove the weeds that popped up around the plants and apply organic fertilizer under Nana's instruction if necessary. As time went by, the plants were growing taller and stronger. When they noticed the vegetables flowering and producing fruits, their eyes were sparkling like diamonds. Never had they looked forward to summer like this before. But they clearly knew that it's worthwhile to wait for the inviting results.
Finally, Nana said it was time for the first harvest. Hearing that, the children all jumped into the air and cheers filled the whole garden. Nana gave them each baskets and, together they gathered some of the cucumbers, carrots and tomatoes, which were turned into delicacies. “Who wants to help eat this fresh salad ” Nana asked. “Me!” everyone responded loudly. Tasting the salad, they thought nothing could be more delicious, because it was they who grew these vegetables. They all learned that many hands make light work and patience really pays off.
Possible version 2 :
Whenever the grandchildren came to visit, they would dash into the garden. Eager to help grow the vegetables well, they first took turns to water the plants. Then Nana showed them which plants needed trimming or which needed tying up to grow tall and straight. Day after day, spring turned into summer and finally, the plants started revealing their colorful secrets. The children were thrilled to see the tomatoes turning red, the cucumbers hiding under the green leaves and the peppers growing bigger. Not until then did they realize that Nana was right-- all they needed was patience.
Finally, Nana said it was time for the first harvest. With baskets ready, Nana and the children started out on their business. Nana took them around the garden and picked some tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and cabbages. Then for the following hour, they were busying making vegetable salad. The children helped wash the dirt off the food while Nana chopped up the vegetables. When Nana asked who wanted to try the fresh salad, everyone expressed their willingness excitedly. “OK. Amy, get the plates. Justin, get the water and cups, and Michael, get the forks. Let's celebrate the harvest!”

Text3:W: It is a pity you missed the art exhibition.
M: Really
W: Yeah. Many visitors wouldn’t tear themselves away from the paintings. It is indeed a great feast of eyes. I want to visit it again.
Text4:W: George, it’s boring to stay at home. Why don’t we play badminton outside
M: I’d like to, but it’s too cold today. Look, it’s snowing! It’s all white. Do you like snow I think we can make a snowman now.
W: Let’s go!
Text5:M: How are you getting along with your English lessons
W: I’m doing well in grammar, but I have difficulty in listening and speaking.
Text6:M: Did you see last night’s American football game
W: Of course, it was the biggest game of the year! The Kansas City Chiefs swept the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in first in the Super Bowl.
M: What a game! I can’t believe the Buccaneers pulled out such a decisive win against the Chiefs.
W: Absolutely, the game ended with a score of 31 to 9. Have the Buccaneers ever won the Super Bowl before
M: The last time they won the Super Bowl was in 2003 against the Oakland Raiders, which was also a landslide victory. The score was 48 to 21.
W: Wow, they are really a powerful team.

M: I’m not sure. I’ve seen them many times. They are frequent visitors to my garden, damaging my plants and making a mess. That’s so annoying! Look, they brought some trash here today. One time, I found a dead mouse in front of the door.
W: Wow, that’s not very pleasant. I remember I read somewhere that oranges and lemons can be used to scare off cats.
M: What You mean I should put some fruits around to keep cats away Are you kidding
W: It sounded ridiculous to me too. According to that article, cats really dislike the smell of oranges and lemons. You know how strong their peels smell, right So, they can be used to frighten off cats. Why don’t you try it Oranges and lemons are non-poisonous, so they won’t be harmful to animals or your garden. Maybe that actually works.
M: Wow, Mia. You always find a way to surprise me … Fine, I will try it, and if it does work, I’ll buy you a gift.
Text10:W: There are a lot of differences between Chinese and Western ways of eating. Chinese use chopsticks to help themselves to almost everything except soup, but westerners use a knife and fork. When treating guests, Chinese tend to prepare more than the people can manage, while the westerners would just offer the amount they can manage. Furthermore, Chinese hosts and hostesses tend to show their hospitality by persuading the guests to have more and more; in contrast, the western hosts and hostesses will express their friendliness by saying “Help yourself.” Moreover, Chinese will insist on offering the guests food or drinks, even though the guests have had enough. The westerners will not go on giving offers if the guests say they have had enough. There are quite a number of differences between Chinese and Western ways of eating and I have just mentioned a few of them.马街中学高2023级高二上学期期中考试

Environmental management work between Rogart and Lairg has successfully been finished recently by Network Rail, on top of protecting nearby nesting hen harriers (筑巢的白尾鹞), a kind of bird of great European importance. The location of the work runs through the Strath Carnaig and Strath Fleet Moors SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and SPA (Special Protection Area). Both are special areas for supporting a population of breeding (繁殖的) hen harriers.
Work necessary for the safe operation of the railway needed to be done at the same time as the breeding season so the work could have disturbed breeding harriers. But Network Rail’s ecology team worked with the Highland Raptor Study Group to conduct surveys of the hen harriers along the line.
“It was a pleasure to work with Network Rail this spring and summer carrying out surveys along the line between Rogart and Lairg,” said Brian Etheridge, from the Highland Raptor Study Group. “The priority was to look for breeding hen harriers, a threatened bird of prey (猛禽).”
Once breeding harriers had been identified, Network Rail put in place unique working procedures to reduce the influence on the birds. Measures were put in place to minimise (使减至最小) noise disturbance, through the use of battery-operated chainsaws (链锯), and time-limited working in any one area to keep noise to a minimum. Before any form of work could start, an additional survey was carried out to check on any nesting hen harriers in order to confirm whether the work was safe to continue. A camera was also installed to monitor nesting locations during the work to check that there were no signs of disturbance.
Thanks to the efforts of Network Rail, three hen harrier chicks grew healthily in their nests near the worksite. A real success story for these protected birds. Jonathan Callis, Senior Asset Engineer for Network Rail, said, “We are delighted the care, professionalism and cooperation demonstrated by everyone who contributed to this project has resulted in such a successful outcome for the birds.”

While for many a chef, serving up the fanciest (最优质的) and most delicious meals is the final aim, Rudolf Brand has an extra aim: fighting food waste. He believes that with his dishes, he can have a big influence on people’s way of thinking about food and food waste.
With 22 years of experience, including Michelin-starred restaurants in London and Amsterdam, he has seen a lot of food wasted in his career. So what is the best way to stop this For him, it really comes down to one important thing: “Rather than think about what you want to cook, look at the left things, what’s available (可利用的) , and then make a menu. This is what every chef should do.”
He’s clear on his solution. “Lose that fanciness, and look at the quality of the product and the flavor (风味) ,” Rudolf explains. “There are too many chefs who are trying to make their dish too fancy. They want to have only the biggest sea fish. Or they make a dish with only the heart of the cabbage, only using the best leaves, and then they throw away the rest.” He shakes his head at the idea of such waste.
He knows that one of his suppliers—a local farm—is left with a growing food mountain when top Michelin-starred chefs only buy the prized cuts of meat instead of ordering the whole leg. In just three or four weeks, the farm is left with 1,000 legs of lamb in the freezer. “And that’s just one supplier,” he says.
While other chefs will only accept the best ingredients (原料) from their suppliers, if something is smaller or damaged or has a few black bits, Rudolf is still going to use it. “Just because I’ll accept produce of a slightly lower quality doesn’t mean I’m going to serve food of a less quality. It’s my job to turn that into good quality food on the plate,” he says. As a chef, he thinks he has a duty not only to cook delicious food, but also to reduce food waste.
28.What is Rudolf’s extra goal with his dishes
A.To create the fanciest meals ever.
B.To educate the public on food waste.
C.To encourage people to cook by themselves.
D.To start a career in Michelin-starred restaurants.
29.What does Rudolf say about many chefs
A.They care too much about flavor.
B.They are too choosy about ingredients.
C.They satisfy customers’ needs to the full.
D.They would like to try out new cooking methods.
30.What problem do food suppliers face according to Rudolf
A.They overproduce greatly. B.They struggle to win orders.
C.They fail to store their products properly. D.They have many unwanted left ingredients.
31.Which of the following best describes Rudolf
A.Influential. B.Energetic. C.Poor. D.Responsible.
D
For many of us, online shopping has made the process of purchasing goods a far simpler and more convenient process. No longer do we have to head to shops to browse through various objects, wandering round endless shelves, before finally setting for the first thing we saw. These days, we find the item we want or need online, click on it, and check out its description and, most importantly, its user reviews. If it fits the bill, we send it to our basket and pay.
There seems to be a wealth of options at our fingertips. But how do we know the options that pop up in front of us really are the best deals, and how might algorithms (算法) help or hold us back
Algorithms, simply put, are mathematical instructions which tell a computer how to solve problems. When shopping is involved, what is the problem they solve Well, they instruct a computer which advertisements to show and which products a user is most likely to buy. By analyzing the things we bought or looked at previously algorithms can predict what goods we’re most likely to be attracted by.
For some people, the idea of something guessing your preferences could sound a bit worrying. But first, let’s look at the positives. By telling a computer to show us what we are interested in, it can not only save us a lot of time, but also help us find the best deals. However, there are some people who have concerns about the impact of algorithms on our shopping experience. It is possible that algorithms may only select options from a limited number of brands, or may favour products from certain companies. There are also concerns that we aren’t always shown the cheapest or best deal, even though that’s what we’re searching for.
So, the takeaway from this is that algorithms are here to stay, and it’s wise to know they exist. Whenever you are shopping, be it online or off, make sure you shop around for the best deals. The first thing you see might not always be the best for you.
32.What is the main factor that leads you to buy the product online immediately
A.The reasonable price. B.Salesgirls’ description.
C.Customers’ comments. D.The convenient delivery.
33.How do algorithms help customers find their favourite goods
A.The previous consuming records. B.The most advertisements they see.
C.The frequency of visiting the store. D.The amount of money they spend.
34.What does the author think of algorithms used for online shopping
A.Doubtful. B.Beneficial. C.Negative. D.Worrying.
35.Which message does the author want to convey in the last paragraph
A.Many hands make light work. B.Actions speak louder than words.
C.Only the feet tell if the shoes fit. D.Only comparing can see the gap.

In many people’s eyes, plants are quiet and passive. They can’t talk. They can’t walk. 36 .
Or can they A new BBC documentary series, The Green Planet, gives us a new look at plants. Released on January 10 on Bilibili, it uncovers the wonderful and dramatic ways that plants behave.
Plants compete against each other to live. Each species has its own ways of defense. In rainforests, different kinds of plants race for sunlight. The forest floor is described as a “battlefield” in the series as only two percent of the sunlight filters (透过) through it. 37 . But they are caught up in a vine (藤蔓) that tries to take a ride. Finally, they are both overtaken by a fast-growing balsa tree. As the balsa’s leaves are smooth, the vine can’t get a hold. Similarly, some trees make poisonous sap (毒汁) to protect themselves.
38 . In deserts, the roots of Euphrates poplar are connected. If a tree finds water, it will share it with others through the roots. Studies also show that plants use fungus (真菌) in the soil as a way to “talk” to each other. It’s kind of like how Wi-Fi works. 39 .
The series not only lets us wonder at the plant world but pushes us to understand that plants are important. “ 40 . We depend upon them for every mouth of food that we eat and every breath that we breathe,” said David Attenborough, presenter of the series. It’s time to look after wild plants just as carefully as our houseplants.

“How long does that take ” asked Michael. He liked vegetables sometimes, especially carrots.
“It will take a few months before anything is ready to eat,” answered Nana. The children were surprised.
“Months Why would you do all that work and then have to wait so long ” asked Amy. “You should just go to the store and buy them.”
“Patience, my sweeties! Don’t you know food always tastes best when you grow it yourself ” replied Nana. “And if all of you come to help, it won’t be too much work.”
“I’ll help you, Nana,” offered Justin. He put down the soccer ball and went to look at the gardening tools Nana had laid out. “What do we do first ” Michael and Amy came over to look, too.
Nana taught Justin how to use a trowel (小铲子) to dig small rows of holes for the seeds. Next, Nana showed Amy how to pour the seeds into each hole. And it was Michael’s job to cover up the holes with soil. Finally, Amy wrote the vegetable names on sticks that Justin pushed into the ground. “This way we can remember which vegetable seeds we have planted,” said Nana.
When they had planted everything, the children took turns filling up the watering can so that Nana could make the soil nice and wet for the seeds to start to grow.
“Now we just water them a little every day, and with some time and sunshine, we’ll have some delicious things to eat in the summer,” said Nana.
