Comparing college entrance exams, there are different needs for admission(录取). The national college entrance examination, or gaokao, is known as the most competitive test for Chinese students. Do students in other countries also need to take a standardized test to get into university
South Korea holds the College Scholastic Ability Test(CSAT) in November each year. The CSAT plays an important role in the country’s education. On test day, bus and subway frequency increases to make sure that students can get to the test sites in time.
Japan is trying to reform its standardized national college entrance exam. In January 2022, Common Test for University Admissions took the place of the National Center Test for University Admissions, which had been adopted since 1990. The new exam aims to put emphasis on the ability of students to discover and solve problems by themselves.
The American College Test(ACT) and Scholastic Assessment Test(SAT) are the two main college entrance exams taken by students in the US. While SAT tests a student’s ability to learn, the ACT tests a student’s educational development. Both tests normally take place seven times throughout the year. Students can retake the exams for a better score.
In the UK, there’s no standardized test for college admission. Instead, each college has their own admission criteria. These criteria often only include submission of transcripts(成绩单) and participation in an interview. Yet, there are subject-specific exams used by some colleges.
46. What is the purpose of the new test in Japan
A. To improve students’ learning environments.
B. To assess students’ educational backgrounds.
C. To help more students in getting high scores.
D. To test students’ thinking and practical abilities.

You can’t imagine how terrible I felt at that time. A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps (圆圈) and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later told me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamed that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces (鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust (重新调整). Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By mile17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Although my ankle was very painful, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was so hungry!
As I came to mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels (世俗标签), I can now call myself a “marathon winner”.
49.How did the author feel a month before the marathon
A.Anxious. B.Frightened.
C.Well prepared. D.Confident.
50.What does the underlined phrase “ not athletic” mean in paragraph 2

C.Not talented in sports. D.Not determined to sports.
51.How was the author’s first marathon
A.He made it. B.He quit halfway.
C.He got the first prize. D.He walked to the end.
52.What does the story mainly tell us
A.One is never too old to learn.
B.More haste, less speed.
C.A winner is one with a great effort of will.
D.A man owes his success to his family support.

She said that she was happy when she saw people online regarding her as the pride of the country, and yet she kept saying that she was “nobody but normal worker at a launch site” and there are a lot more people just like her going unnoticed while doing the hardest job to guarantee a better future for the Chinese space program. Chinese students always complain that they’re under great pressure and don’t get enough sleep. But they may be surprised to learn that they’re much luckier than their peers in South Korea and Japan, according to a recently published report, conducted by Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences on the physical and mental health of senior high school students in the three Asian countries.
According to the study among nearly 6,000 high school students in the three countries, Chinese students are the tallest but poorest in physical fitness. Chinese students are on average 168.17cm, compared with 167.61cm for South Korean students and 164.70cm for Japanese students. Chinese students asked for sick leave more than students in other countries. About 72 percent of Korean students never asked for sick and injury leave during high school, compared to 53 percent for Japanese students and 45 percent for Chinese students. Moreover, Chinese students drink alcohol and smoke earlier than Korean and Japanese students. Around 70 percent of Chinese students have drunk alcohol, compared to 50 percent for Korean and Japanese students.
According to the survey, Japanese and South Korean students suffer more pressure than their Chinese peers. Statistics show 16 percent of students in China said they experienced mental pressure often over the past year, while the numbers in Japan and South Korea were 33 percent and 47 percent respectively. Their worries come from “study”, “future after graduation”, “friendships” and “relationship with their parents”. To go with stress, 57.9 percent of Korean students sleep the least, less than six hours a day, compared with 46.6 percent of Japanese students and 30 percent of Chinese students.
More Chinese students were satisfied with their physical appearance, double that of students in the survey from Japan and South Korea. The report said that over half of students in South Korea had tried to lose weight in the past year, while in China the figure was only 22 percent. In measures of self-worth, such as “I think I am valuable” and “I think I am successful”, “I can complete many things”, “I won’t give up to failure,” Chinese students showed greater self-confidence than students in Japan and South Korea.
57. What’s the main idea of the second paragraph

D. Chinese teenagers are tallest, but most unhealthy.

If you’re going abroad for college, you might be thinking about how to get yourself a safe and cozy home for the years ahead. Of course, dormitories are always a good place to start, but some large state colleges require juniors to live off campus due to the limited number of dorm rooms. 61
How to find a house
62 If you are just a freshman or don’t know many people, don’t hesitate to approach some upperclassmen in your classes or clubs. More often than not, upperclassmen have more experience with renting and are more familiar with the area your school is in.
Another good idea is to talk to seniors who are currently living off- campus. These seniors’ landlords will most likely be looking for new tenants (房客) after graduation.
Also, registered realtors(房地产经纪人)might be able to find you a place for a fee. In addition, Facebook groups can also provide some useful information. 63
Roommates
Having roommates can not only save us some money, but also give us valuable companionship. However, remember that finding the right roommates for you is the most important thing, other than safety concerns. 64 definitely do not lie about your preferences, schedule, or habits. On the other side, also remember to ask your potential roommates to tell you about themselves in detail.
65 Constantly running into conflicts with your quiet roommate is definitely the last thing you want.
A. If you are a party animal, please do everybody a favor by being outspoken about it.
B. While looking for roommates,
C. Get along well with your roommates.
D. When having a chat with your roommates,
E. First, you can ask your friends who are already living off campus.

【参考范文】
Dear Wang Wei,
I am sorry to learn that learning English is a big challenge for you, which actually is not unusual for teenagers of your age. So just take it easy and here comes my advice.
First of all, it is preferable to memorize as many words as possible since vocabulary makes all the difference to listening, speaking, reading and writing for English learners. Besides, I think it would be wise to read more English newspapers and magazines, which can not only enhance your interest in learning English, but also help to accumulate a large number of sentence patterns for your writing. Last but not least, you may consider finding a partner, with whom you can practice English and exchange ideas.
I hope you can make progress in your English study. Looking forward to your good news.
Yours,
Li Hua
