My father used to work in the city and seldom stayed at home. But he would come back help to harvest(收割) rice every year.
One autumn, he promised to help our neighbor, who lost his arms in a traffic accident in 1999, to harvest his rice. After Father harvested our town, his little rice picker broke. What’s worse, he had to return to work the next day because his partner was ill in hospital. It meant that Father wouldn’t be back in a few days. It now seemed impossible to help out the neighbor.
Father told us that be wouldn’t let the neighbor’s rice rot( 糜烂) in the field. He decided to harvest it by hand without a machine. “If tonight’s weather is clear, I think I can do it.” added my father. In fact, he was rather tired after a day’s harvest work.
After dinner, Father had a short rest and made his way to the field. A full moon was glowing (发光) in the sky and the weather was cold but clear. He spent the whole night keeping his word.
I would never forget the image(画面):Father was cutting rice in the light of the harvest moon. Behind him, row after row of rice stocks(秸秆) stood at attention, showing respect for a man who kept his word.
1.Did Father always stay with the family?
2.What happened to the neighbor in 1999?
3.Why was Father required to return to work?
4.How did Father help the neighbor harvest rice in the field?
5.How long did Father spend in harvesting the neighbor’s rice?
1.No.
2.He lost his arms in a traffic accident.
3.Because his partner was ill in hospital.
4.By hand without a machine.
5.The whole night.
My father used to work in the city and seldom stayed at home. But he would come back help to harvest(收割) rice every year可知,作者的父亲在城市里工作,很少呆在家里。
2.根据题干关键词in 1999可以找到答案在短文中第二段第一句“One autumn, he promised to help our neighbor, who lost his arms in a traffic accident in 1999”。
What’s worse, he had to return to work the next day because his partner was ill in hospital.,因为他的搭档生病住院了,所以他第二天不得不回到了工作岗位上。
4.根据题干“help the neighbor harvest rice”可知答案应定位到倒数第三段第二句“He decided to harvest it by hand without a machine.”
5.由题干中的spend 可知答案应该定位到文中倒数第二段最后一句,“He spent the whole night keeping his word.”,故答案是The whole night整个晚上。而句中“keeping his word”便是说的“father spend in harvesting the neighbor’s rice”。

What should you do if there is a fire at school? Do you know how to protect yourself in a large crowd? Every year since 1996, on the last Monday of the last week in March, the National Day of Education on the Safety of Elementary and Middle School Students(全国中小学安全教育日) is held.
This year it falls on March 30. It offers us a chance to learn more about school safety.
A 2010 survey from People’s Daily shows that the worst accidents were results of stampedes(踩踏),fires and traffic.
Experts suggest that right safety measures could avoid 80 percent of these accidents, China Education Daily reported.
When facing an accident, the first and most important rule is to stay calm. But different accidents mean different ways of dealing with them.
A stampede happens in a place where a large crowd is gathered. When students around you begin to push, stand still and try to hold onto something, or stay in a corner until the crowd leaves, cover your head with both hands. Lean to one side, curl your body and bend your legs.
When there’s a fire, stay calm and follow teachers’ instructions. Leave the classroom and use a piece of cloth to cover your mouth and nose so that you don’t breathe in smoke.
If you take a school bus on your way home or to school, remember to fasten your seatbelt and not to walk around when the bus is moving. If you walk to school or go by bike, follow traffic rules. Wait for the green traffic lights, and look left and right for cars before you cross the road.

Thanksgiving is always on a Thursday. The day after it has been known as Black Friday. It is the start of the holiday shopping season, and it has been the busiest shopping day of the year in the US since 2005.
Most stores offer big sales on Black Friday. They open their doors quite early in the morning. They try to attract shoppers with big discounts (打折). Credit cards first became popular in the 1920s. At that time, businesses, such as hotels and companies, gave credit cards to their best customers (顾客). Unlike today’s credit cards, customers could only use these cards at the store or business that gave out the card. Customers had to pay for things in full. They couldn’t pay for something a little at a time.
In 1950, a businessman named MCNamara started a credit card company-Diners Club. Unlike earlier credit cards, this card could be used by customers at many restaurants. Customers liked the card because they didn’t have to carry a lot of cash with them. Restaurant owners liked the card, too. Why? They found out that customers usually spent more money when they could pay by credit cards.
In its first year of business, Diners Club provided 200 cards. The customers who got the cards from the diners Club could use them at 27 different restaurants. Today, Diners Club has 8 million customers, and they can use their cards in over 7.6 million businesses in more than 200 countries.
